Brasier somehow, even with tonight, has a 3.66 FIP/ 3.62 xFIP on the year. Sure doesn't feel like it when you watch him. Value! See, don’t believe your lying eyes! It’s just like the recession they tell us doesn’t exist. Looking quickly, it appears that teams just plain score a lot of runs off Brasier. B-Ref has his RA9 - which includes earned and unearned runs - at 6.29. He's also been bad in every month except one. He gave up a .501 OPS in June and hasn't been below .833 in any other month. He gives it up to the tune of .900 with RISP and .915 with men on base. These are the ABs that we tend to notice and remember. These numbers have to contribute to why he seems worse than his FIP and xFIP indicate. The National Bureau of Economic Research declares retrospectively when recessions began and ended. If we are in one now, it would be an extremely unusual one because job creation has been through the roof for about 18 months. It would be an unusual recession just like Ryan Brasier is having an unusual season.

The reason why his FIP and xFIP are so good is because he strikes out a good amount of guys and doesn’t walk people. He also doesn’t allow HR at an obscene rate like one might think
The issue we of course all know is that all of the hits he allows are approximately a 215 mph exit velo. All the contact is LOUD.

Hmm, maybe shouldn't have traded Springs. (Is this one on your spreadsheet, julyanmorley?)

Chaim picks him up for nothing, he stinks for 20 innings, and then he passes him along to the next team. Feels kind of unfair for Chaim to lose a million points for that. If he had never used a flyer on him in the first place he wouldn't have lost those points.
Here is the link, btw. I cleaned it up a little:

But I remember the reporting at the time being that TB saw something in Springs' analytics that made them like the guy. Should Bloom not lose credit for TB finding that value instead of Boston?
I guess there are just inherent limitations to this kind of scorekeeping, though. Like it's true that Bloom got Springs for nothing and turned that into Ronaldo Hernandez, which is something. So it would seem strange to view the whole sequence as a negative. Kind of like it would be strange to view Bloom turning $3 million into one decent year of Renfroe plus Binelas and Hamilton as a negative.

Story activated.
Btw, when the say a player is "Activated," does anyone else get a flash image of a bad science fiction movie's killer robot suddenly coming to life?

But it is very hard to turn something into nothing. So saying we got *something* for something is the least you can expect. The question is was it worth it. I am not going to ding Bloom for Springs, though. I don’t think anyone saw that as giving up anything. More power to the Rays for getting him rolling. That happens. Indeed, broadly I don’t believe in looking at a guy’s numbers, good or bad, and saying “could have been us!” Different situations lead to different results.

I like this version of Hill. Working fast, throwing strikes.

These guys are sort of damning Verdugo with faint praise. He could hit .310? He could, yeah. But .310 without HRs is Beni, who was really not worth a big investment. I will be really curious to see what they do with him when he approaches FA.

I want them to play in a way that is representative, whatever it may be. With a lot of guys back, we (and Bloom) can get a peek at next year. If they win, that’s great if it means brighter days.

I’ve seen enough. Extend Kiké. Then get a great RF. Verdugo-Kiké-stud will be good.
