Also, nice first start for Mike Carp.

Maybe after tonight John Farrell will remember that he has Mike Carp on the roster. Come Friday, Ortiz will be on the roster, so there is even less chance Carp will play except to rest Napoli.

With JBJ sent down, you could also see Carp in LF/DH any time one of Nava/Ellsbury/Victorino/Ortiz needs a day off and there's a righty on the mound (or if Gomes gets a day off as well). You still won't see him very often, but he should at least start a game or two a week.

Things go from good to bad very quickly with Alfredo Aceves.
edit: whew, thanks Shane!

Throwing a bunch of high changeups is not a sustainable approach for any starting pitcher. But Aceves gets out of that jam with a great defensive play by Victorino. He got a dynamite jump on a very hard-hit ball.

Victorino plays right field like J.D. Drew. That's a very big compliment.

Excellent play. Made it look a lot easier than it was with the jump he got.

His defense in right has been so good. J.D. Drew was a good defensive right fielder and Trot Nixon in his prime was very good, but Victorino might be playing the best defensive right fielder I have seen. Another nice grab out there. This is why his contract doesn't really bug me. He doesn't have to hit a ton to have value.

I've been pleasantly surprised with Aceves' work so far. Not particularly efficient (but he'll never be, with his below-average control), but he's missing just enough bats and getting enough ground balls that a dash of that SSS BABIP magic has given him two solid outings. He's been as good of a sixth starter as can reasonably be expected. Reminds me of old friend Julian Tavarez, right down to the crazy.

It might be time to give Middlebrooks a night off.

If Ortiz is activated by this Friday it is probably has more to do with being on the DL less than 20 days which would allow him to make $2 million more in 2014. I don't expect Ortiz to play regularly for a while.

Yeah, Aceves definitely shouldn't have started that inning. Blame it on Farrell being a little greedy and wanting to steal another out or two.

Idiotic decision by Farrell right there. There was really no reason for it either.
Also, it woulda been nice if Napoli and Nava had converted one of those bases loaded opportunities. And if Nava hadn't run into an out for no reason last inning.

Even if Farrell wanted to leave Aceves in, he definitely should have had someone warming behind him. That he didn't and is forced to have Aceves pitch against Mark Reynolds after giving up two home runs is just bad managing.

I blame Farrell. Hell, even throwing Steven Wright out there would have been a better decision than keeping Aceves in.

He should have had someone warming up to begin the inning. He wasn't likely to go more than 5 plus anyways. Not really stretched out yet.

So, now who takes the 7-8-9. Used to be Uehara, Bailey, Hanrahan ... Miller takes the 7th?

And if Nava hadn't run into an out for no reason last inning. I thought Farrell wanted to win. Is this some perverse payback for Aceves' spring training antics? Absolutely sickening. Walk, home-run, home-run, double. Well over 100 pitches from a guy who is more used to the pen than the rotation.

After seeing him tire in the 5th, there's just no excuse for not having someone ready to go from the pen. I didn't catch the Nava steal attempt, did he go on his own? Farrell can be pretty worrisome when it comes to running into outs.
