This is hella fascinating - two years in an American program is bound to lessen the language barrier some Japanese players face when coming to the U.S. And it's going to be interesting to see how teams navigate drafting these guys, since they have a unique bit of leverage of returning home to Japan and getting posted at a later time. I'm not sure he does. Foregoing NPB at least used to be a "don't let the door hit you on the way out" situation. At least it was with Tazawa. That was 15 years ago - the landscape has changed. Plus, there's the education component, which is different than just signing with signing with a team outright. If others follow, and NPB risks a significant talent drain, they'll at least have to consider welcoming these guys back.

I mean, Tazawa played in Taiwan in 2021 and was very good (he stunk in 2022 in Mexico). It's interesting that he never played in NPB, and the time he'd have gone back was post-pandemic or just before, so I'm not sure it can be dismissed as a 15-years-ago thing.
Point taken that times change, but how many guys do you think are really going to do this? It's like how MLB isn't going to worry about too many guys going the Carter Stewart route either. They're not going to worry about tons of guys coming to the U.S. to attend college in English I don't think.

There used to a rule literally called the “Tazawa rule” which bans players like Tazawa from playing in the NPB for 2 to 3 years upon returning. They abolished it in 2020 but the process of going back is still a little complicated I think.
Also I don’t think the “significant talent drain” is going to happen in Japan, because 1) first round picks in the NPB will usually debut just one or two years after getting drafted, 2) players face way better competition faster, and 3) there isn’t a huge difference in minimum salary between the NPB and MiLB. But on the other hand, the talent drain is more and more an issue in the KBO.

Forgive me if this thread is premature, but I'm not sure how teams can spend all their $$$ if there's even a 5% chance Sasaki is posted. Could we see unprecedented trades for IFA money this year?
*Thanks for moving it, didn't see the thread

It would be funny if he has a deal with someone for $20,000,000 and they have to stack a dozen bonus pool deals together. He'd be worth it.

Can’t seem to find any news out there regarding this years upcoming class and possible connections. MLB Pipeline has the top 50 but no mention of interested teams as they’ve done in the past. It does kick off Jan 15th right?

It does kick off Jan 15th right? It does kick off on January 15. On MLB Pipeline's list, I would expect the Sox to sign Vladimir Asencio. Sounds like Ben Badler will have some coverage in the coming weeks, although he's done much less international stuff than in the past. Also, based off social media posts, etc., it looks like the Red Sox will have another large signing class this year.

If Sasaki is seriously trying to get posted this year are teams going to hold off? Alternatively, if that was the case, and we don’t want throw our chips in and maybe trade for some pool space I wonder if we can swoop in and pick up some other talent if other teams are playing wait and see. I know very little about the international market so I apologize if that sounds ridiculous

I know very little about the international market so I apologize if that sounds ridiculous He has asked to be posted after next season. I have seen some Japanese side people say this it is becoming the standard move to bluff your exit a year early to build up hype. If he waited one additional season he would be a regular free agent and if his stock does not dip he would be seen as significantly more desirable than Yamamoto.
There is a belief that he has the ability to force his current team to let him go, and Ohtani has previously made the decision to go early and cost himself a giant contract. So, it's not obvious what's going to happen.
It does put teams in a weird position. High high does X need to be for you to sit out a year of international signings for an X% chance of signing a $400,000,000 player for $5 million? Probably not all that high.

I also think Sasaki may not sign until 2025 signing period.

A couple swings from Asencio courtesy of MLB: www.mlb.com/video/top-int-l-prospects-asencio-of?t=mlb-pipelineDespite only having one ~$1 million signee this year, the Red Sox will have much more pool money to use this year. Their pool is $5,925,000, while last year's was $4,644,000. So, even after Asencio, the Red Sox will have more money than last year. I'd imagine they'll be handing out quite a few mid-six figure bonuses.

I wonder if the Sox pursue that avenue again this summer.

Feels like forever since we’ve been linked to anyone in the top 10 of an IFA class. Perhaps the org views IFAs as such high variance prospects that they find more strength in quantity than they do in targeting the huge bonus babies.

We look to have had a 50% hit rate on 7 figure signings over the past 3 classes. I'd imagine thats probably slightly above average.

Recall, for example, Antoni "at least one scout thinks he's the best prospect in the system" Flores.

I know it’s a wildly unrealistic thought but part of me wants to believe they are saving a good chunk of the bonus pool money for Roki Sasaki
I’d imagine if he comes next year he’ll wait to sign after Jan 15 tho so that every team has a full bonus pool to throw at him

Is there some kind of restriction on the contract international free agents are on after signing? What’s stopping a team from giving Sasaki their entire pool and then saying oh we’ll just give you the mega deal after you’re signed? I’d imagine there’s SOMETHING preventing that, but not sure the exact mechanics.

I’d imagine there’s SOMETHING preventing that, but not sure the exact mechanics. I thought the same. I assume there's some rule against it, but why can't a team sign him to their International bonus pool, then just sign him to an extension of whatever they want?

My recollection is that this came up when Ohtani was subject to the bonus pools and it boiled down to the fact that the Commissioner's Office has to approve every contract and it would not approve a contract that was so obviously designed to get around the rules as written in the CBA. MLB would never approve of the extension.

Recall, for example, Antoni "at least one scout thinks he's the best prospect in the system" Flores. My usage of "hit rate" was to define their value as a prospect. They might not be anything in the MLB but the Sox at least got a legit prospect from the signings as of 1/3/24 even if the value eventually evaporates.
