2024 International Signing Period
|
Post by 0ap0 on Jan 4, 2024 9:13:49 GMT -5
I thought the same. I assume there's some rule against it, but why can't a team sign him to their International bonus pool, then just sign him to an extension of whatever they want? My recollection is that this came up when Ohtani was subject to the bonus pools and it boiled down to the fact that the Commissioner's Office has to approve every contract and it would not approve a contract that was so obviously designed to get around the rules as written in the CBA. MLB would never approve of the extension. Additionally, without a contract all the power resides with the team and the player could find himself with a deal that's not exactly what he had in mind.

BTW, don't see it mentioned, but the Soxprospects page has a bunch of names including Asencio as "rumored signings", but with a Jan 2023 date. Don't know if these are just placeholders, but with a lot of detail (I would not think so) but I also would be surprised to see the names leaked this early. www.soxprospects.com/international.htm

It'll be updated to January 2024.
Expect the list to change a bit, but the players listed are those that have been at the Red Sox DR Academy over the past year and have a very strong chance of signing on 1/15 (or soon after).

Carlos Carrasquel, 3B, VZ 86. Edwin Brito, OF, DR 89. Dalvinson Reyes, RHP, DR 99. Anderson Fermin, SS/CF, DR These rankings are still by bonus. Seems like those four guys will get healthy six figure bonuses.

On BA's Future Projection podcast, Badler noted Carlos Carrasquel as a top 3B prospect in this signing class. Notes that he's big-framed at 6'4 and not much of a runner and wasn't much of a defender at SS so switched to 3B early. He has big power and a lot of bat speed, swing works pretty well - "a lot of offensive attributes to like". Also compares Asencio to Cespedes in terms of approach at the plate.

Badler updated his big board with some detail about the players tied to the Red Sox. Carrasquel: "Good mix of hitting ability and easy righthanded power from a sound swing, 6-foot-4 frame with more strength projection remaining, offensive-minded infielder with arm strength for third base." Brito: "Big raw power and bat speed from the right side of the plate, drives the ball with damage when he connects, power-over-hit type, likely in an outfield corner." Reyes: "High-end physical projection (6-foot-5, 190 pounds) with easy mechanics, a fastball up to 92 mph with what should be more in the tank to go with his curveball and changeup." Fermin: "High-end athleticism with plus speed and a solid swing from both sides of the plate, gap power, could fit at either shortstop or in center field." www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2024-mlb-international-prospects-top-50-bonus-board/

So far five Bahamian players signed. Three with Boston. If we started a thread maybe call it Jazz Theory? Let’s just hope in five years you can get conch fritters at Fenway.

Badler is back to listing bonuses? He wasn't before. Seems like he’s not doing it for the Mets guys, so maybe it’s just a function of who gives him that info?

Do pitchers ever get 7 figure bonuses? They gave Anderson Espinoza and Christopher Acosta 1.8 and 1.5 million each one year, I believe that was about 10 years ago.

Do pitchers ever get 7 figure bonuses? Rarely, I think only two pitchers got 7 figure bonuses last signing period and one was Luis Morales, who was 20 at the time.
