At this point in my life, west coast road trip night games = watching the highlights the next morning. I used to think that late starts will not matter when I am retired. Now that I am retired, I find that late starts actually still do matter !!

Now that I am retired, I find that late starts actually still do matter !! Being an LA transplant means I finally get to take in the games during non-work hours. Going to Anaheim this Monday, and just missing an Ohtani start by one day (he starts Sunday) which is good for the Sox but bad for my baseball dreams.

As things are lined up we miss Darvish in San Diego, miss Ohtani in Orange County, and miss Gallen in Arizona. Inshallah.

Sign X for anything at all reasonable, even team friendly, we'd be in permanent tax penalty mode. No thanks.

Speier says we sent the A's $75,000 for Pablo Reyes I get they're a God awful team and it's not like Reyes is any special player but that's just absurd to take 75K for him if you ask me. What a crummy franchise.

Everyone wanted Bogaerts back. He took a pay cut on his last deal and he wanted to get paid. Everyone can say if we offered him a better contract he would of signed. That's something I STRONGLY DISAGREE with. The man wanted to test the market. He deserved it. This is the first year of an 11 year deal so yes it would be nice to have him this year and the next 4-5. Its the 5-6 after that he will be making absurd money and wont be worth it. He got his money, we saved ourselves from a horrible contract with Mayer 2-3 years away. It will work out in the long run maybe not the short run but that's not how it works. A good GM sets up for the long run. Devers is younger and was the smarter investment. That's what we did. even short term i have X on my fantasy baseball team. In the last month he's ranked 601. HORRIBLE. 19/91 with 13 runs, 2 homers, 6 rbis, 3 SB and batting .209. I did not. So not "everyone."

Sign X for anything at all reasonable, even team friendly, we'd be in permanent tax penalty mode. No thanks. Not really. They could have made better choices in 2022 and not gone over the LTT. And they could have stayed under this year with X on the team if they had passed on Duvall and Mondesi, signed a lower-priced BP arm than Jansen, and scrimped a bit elsewhere, such as going for a cheaper SP alternative than Kluber, who looks cooked. And of course, they have a lot of money coming off after 2024 when the Sale contract expires. Martin and Turner will both be gone after 2024. In fact, Turner appears on track for a decent enough season that he might choose to hit the market again after this year, rather than stick around for 2024.

This is just as theoretical, but the 2025 and 2026 free agent class is stacked. Perfectly fine that the team passed on X to allocate those resources elsewhere in the future.

Not to mention Ohtani (not advocating) who they now can be among the bidders.

I dont see the Sox spending the 500 plus million it would take to sign Ohtani, though. Nor am I that sure the Sox are just waiting until the winter of 2025/26 to strike.
Devers is only huge signing theyve done and I dont know how much of that was the pressure on them to sign him after losing X and Betts in the past few years.
I'm trying to remember but the last huge ticket item theyve spent on from outside the organization is perhaps JD Martinez if $110 million qualifies and if he doesnt then David Price certainly would qualify.
I think with Devers there was that external pressure but also Devers was willing to take a contact that only paid him thru age 36. A lot of these big ticket guys want huge money through ages 39, 40, or 41, and they're getting them. If Devers got to the market, somebody else would have paid him until he's about 40.
Do the Sox want to pay Ohtani until he's 40? I'm skeptical about that, but some team definitely will bite that bullet. That's the kind of thing that's happening in the free agent market these days that I think the Sox are adverse to. Not saying they're wrong to feel that way, but if they're not willing to do that, its hard to see them landing the top shelf talent in free agency.

My wishlist for this series:
1) 2 wins 2) standing O for Xander 3) no injuries 3) Machado booed and/or plunked

Fun, happy facts ...
In his first 71 PA Yoshida was .288 / .288, xwOBA and wOBA.
Beginning April 23 he's had 89 PA and is .448 / .457.
There are 271 players who have 50+ PA in this time frame. Masa ranks 4th in xwOBA and 3rd in wOBA.
-----
In his first 96 PA Casas was .282 / .263.
Since May 3 he's had 36 PA and is .507 / .419.
There are 262 players who have 30+ PA in this time frame. Casas ranks 4th in xwOBA and 33rd in wOBA.
Almost 75% of the bad karma was the 398', 104.3 mph blast against the Jays that's a homer 85% of the time. If that does go out, he's at .525 and ranks 5th in wOBA.
And of course that was on May 3.
----
Since his callup Duran is at .369 / .425 in 109 PA.
There are 310 players with 50+ PA in this time frame. Duran ranks 55th in xwOBA and 8th in wOBA -- but 5th among 206 guys with 75 PA.
I was prepared to be happy assuming that most of his positive karma was luck, but he's 8 for 24 on week or topped grounders, and that accounts for .031 of the .054 positive karma points. Credit him for that and he's 20th. He's also turned a bunch of singles into doubles, so it's possible that his non-luck ranking is even higher.
----
I seem to remember that we have another very good LHB.
=======
Complete list of Red Sox hitters with a higher Win Probability Added than Xander Bogaerts:
Verdugo Duvall Duran Turner Yoshida Tapia Devers Refsnyfer Chang Valdez Reyes
Xander's at 0.10. With Leverage Index of 2.0 or above, he's 2/13, 2 BB, HBP, 3 GDP.
This is the fourth straight year that his WPA is well below expectations given his wRC+.
