They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

I see Machado has 0.4 WAR and an 81 wRC+ through the first 1/44th of his 11 year, $350 million deal.

Manny Machado having a Miguel Cabrera/Albert Pujols 30s where he is below replacement level over a 7 year stretch but they keep running him out there because it's too humiliating to DFA him, complete with Dave O'Brien pretending that everyone is happy to see this legend at the ballpark, is about the best we can hope for in our quest for Manny Machado's just deserts

You hate facing slumping good teams, you know at a certain point they're going to rake, law of average and all (See: Cardinals, stl) I'll be ecstatic if we take 2.

No hard feelings for Xander, but it’d be nice to hand his team a nice s*** burger (Lou Brown from Major League voice) this weekend.

No hard feelings for Xander, but it’d be nice to hand his team a nice shit burger (Lou Brown from Major League voice) this weekend. Yep. Nothing against Xander, but I very much have hard feelings toward the Padres for giving him the most ridiculous contract of the whole free agent class. It's not like they even won a zero-sum game - it sucked for the Red Sox and it's going to suck for the Padres. It doesn't even help them win this year, really, given that there were more efficient ways they could have improved their team.
And I do think he would've ended up back in Boston if not for that offer. Not guaranteed, but I think there was a good chance.

Based off the reports and the comments from Bloom and Co. It sure sounded like he was this close to signing until the Padres decided to offer an absurd deal which the sox probably smartly said no thanks to matching.

My brain agrees with you, but the fan in me keeps saying "boy, this 2023 team could sure use a RHH all-star at SS". Not going to disagree with any of that, if they had Xandy right now they'd be arguably the best offense in baseball? I guess they are right in there anyway but he'd help them even that much more. I'd probably have been fine giving X 7 years 210M since I'd love to have Xandy for the next 3-4 years and could have lived with what possibly an under water contract for years 5-7. Under no circumstance would I really want Xander for the years 8-11 that the Padres gave him which I know a year or two of that was to keep AAV down but I can't see him being an ML caliber player at all during those seasons.

Unless Xander picks it up, he won't fit the descriptor of RHH all-star at SS this year, or perhaps ever again.

I'm being overly harsh, but his numbers are largely driven by a great first week. Since 4/7, he's got a .259/.363/.356 line with a .328 wOBA. That's fine for a shortstop, but not MVP-caliber or anything. I'm also really not sure that I'm buying his crazy OAA numbers quite yet. Eh, I'd be happy with him if he was still in Boston and looking for positives, so I should probably extend the same courtesy.

It's kind of a complicated counterfactual... For one thing, it would mean no Duvall. And Kiké in CF. And therefore fewer PAs to this point for Duran, though Duran might be knocking the door down in AAA, and/or coming up when Kiké goes to 2B to cover for an injured Arroyo?
I would think it would also mean no Jansen, since they wouldn't have the money to spend on him. (I get the impression they signed Jansen ~12 seconds after they realized they were out of the running for Bogaerts.)
And... is it possible it would mean no Devers extension? I don't think so - I think that was gonna happen regardless - but I'm not 100% sure.

Alternate Xander world has a fierce argument on this board between people clamoring to give Jarren Duran and his 1120 AAA OPS another chance and people reminding us the lessons of Franchy Cordero

Everyone wanted Bogaerts back. He took a pay cut on his last deal and he wanted to get paid. Everyone can say if we offered him a better contract he would of signed. That's something I STRONGLY DISAGREE with. The man wanted to test the market. He deserved it. This is the first year of an 11 year deal so yes it would be nice to have him this year and the next 4-5. Its the 5-6 after that he will be making absurd money and wont be worth it. He got his money, we saved ourselves from a horrible contract with Mayer 2-3 years away. It will work out in the long run maybe not the short run but that's not how it works. A good GM sets up for the long run. Devers is younger and was the smarter investment. That's what we did.
even short term i have X on my fantasy baseball team. In the last month he's ranked 601. HORRIBLE. 19/91 with 13 runs, 2 homers, 6 rbis, 3 SB and batting .209.

Anyway feeling mighty blessed that this series is taking place while the Sox have a decent record and people feel good about them, and not under circumstances that would have led the outrage trolls in the media to feel extra frisky

Very true, I looked at it very simplistically with the thought that everything would have gone the exact same way it went/has gone just with the addition of X at SS, which as you correctly point out isn't correct. Who knows what the butterfly effects could have been if X had decided to sign their final offer or heck what if Eovaldi had agreed to the deal they offered him. We could probably do this round and round in circles, it can be a fun exercise in what ifs but at the end of the day the team is what it is and so far this season it's been a nice fun team to watch.

Not to re-litigate the whole thing (Bogaerts was my favorite, but the team's performance this year has made it pretty easy to get over him leaving), but I think you're off the mark with this one. Every indication suggests he wanted an extension and was hurt when he didn't get a serious offer. The only real evidence we have to suggest he wanted to test the market was that Scott Boras was his agent - but that was true when he signed the first extension too.

Heyman tweeted that the offer was 5/120, which would have been a serious first offer after the 2021-2022 winter market. Bogey was testing the market for anything south of 200m.
