They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). Note that today, Monday June 26, is an off day. This is a weird, single home series sandwiched between road trips. They play in Toronto on Fri, the 30th.

This team is consistently a week away from being a contender or out of the playoff picture.

Interesting piece by Julian Benbow in the Globe today about the cost of all those errors. Excerpt: Along with dependability up the middle, clean fielding has come to be expected at Fenway. Since 2012, the Sox have had fewer than 100 errors every season except 2012 (101), 2017 (107), and 2021 (108).
They are on pace to commit 112 errors this season, which would be their most since the 2010 team made 113.
Mistakes happen. But they come at a price. The Sox’s 53 errors have turned into 33 unearned runs, fourth-most in baseball. They’re 17-21 when they commit an error and they’re 9-13 when they give up an unearned run...
Twenty-two of the Red Sox’ errors have come in the seventh inning or later. Ten have come with the game tied (they lost eight of those games). Five came when they were holding a one-run lead (they lost three of those) and another five came when they were down one (they lost three of those, too). The errors are more common when they’re trailing (24) than when they’re up (19).

Since you asked, and because i know it is of a high degree of importance to you, yes, the Dead and Company Show at Fenway was a lot of fun on Saturday night.
Admittedly, the band plays way slower than their heyday, and the improvisational jams went on a tad bit long (at least for a few songs), but my seats in Pavilion 7, row 5, seat 3 were excellent and they were the barstool chairs with the pseudo bar, which came in very handy for the amount of beer i drank (i won't get into all the party favors...ha)
Highlights...Brown-eyed woman, Terrapin, New Speedway Boogie, Casey Jones (ya better watch your speed). LOL. China Doll came as a real surprise.
But now, we are back for the games and i must say, we need W's. After some fine Italian cuisine tonight, i will be sure to check in.
Late.

Not often you play a team with the reigning Cy Young Award winner and you're glad you catch him rather than his rookie teammate.

I’m assuming your point is that team didn’t win. But I don’t think his posts are mutually exclusive. In fact, the knock on some of the pessimists is they are spoiled and expect rings every time. I don’t. But I certainly like having guys to root for and exciting play. I’ve enjoyed seasons with bad teams. I’ve even not especially enjoyed seasons with highly competitive teams. I don’t think it is that unusual.

That's a photo from the 1977 team that was pretty damn good and entertaining and could have used a wild card. 2021 was good. The other years have been dullsville. I don't really see the sh!t-stirring here. I just see somebody wishing the team was actually captivating, which they're simply not. If you need an assist because perhaps you don't know who's in the photo, it's The Boomer George Scott, the Rooster Rick Burleson, Jim Rice, Yaz, Pudge Fisk, Freddie Lynn, and Bill Campbell. And that photo doesn't include some of the non all-stars like Luis Tiant, Bill Lee, and Dwight Evans, not to mention a crazy character like Bernie Carbo. And this was a year before they added Dennis Eckersley and Jerry Remy. That's a lot of colorful characters and a lot of all-star caliber players. For a lot of us it's that 2003-2008 era team that had a similar crazy but fun cast to root for - that happened to be pretty damn good. I certainly miss those days. Hell I miss the 2018 team. And the 2013 team. It's just a pedestrian time to be a Red Sox fan. I hope it changes but it's certainly not there now.

You think we are in the “great depression” of red sox baseball as Dan thinks? First of all, people are going to think what they think - I doubt Shaughnessy has much sway on what people think. Secondly, no I wouldn't call it the great depression although it's a pretty damn big downgrade from the last two decades. They had a worse stretch from Sept 2011 - 2015, but 2013 was the saving grace that made it manageable. Personally I wouldn't call it the "great depression". I would say for long-time fans, I'd say it was the 1959 - 1966 period which was 8 straight seasons of losing baseball and some near basement finishes. Not many people around that remember the 1919 - 1933 period of awfulness. So while I wouldn't call it the great depression I would all it "The Big Yawn". I mean, cmon, this team has been dull compared to the joy of a lot of the last two decades. I'm hoping it gets better. I won't even rule out it happening this year if they get their defense squared away and have their best starting pitchers healthy, but they have been disappointing since 2019, with the fun exception of them knocking off the Yankees and upsetting the Rays in 2021, but they don't give out rings for that. I've been a fan for 44 seasons and I've seen better times and I've seen some worse. This has not been a time period that I'm going to sit back and remember fondly. I've got better seasons to reflect upon. Besides, take a look at the photo. Does that do anything for you? It does for me. I love Red Sox history, so I enjoy that photo.

It's funny to call this the Great Depression of Red Sox baseball when you could argue that the worst stretch in the team's history was around the start of the actual Great Depression, from 1922-1931 they finished last in the AL 9 times and never won more than 67 games. More recently they were below .500 every year from 1959-1966 topping out at 76 wins, even going back to 1952 they were mediocre that whole time. '91 to '94 was also a worse four season stretch than their current one, coming in over .500 only once at 84 wins in 1991.
Agree or disagree with Shaughnessy overall on Bloom's leadership, but if his statement wasn't hyperbole it was ignorance or idiocy.
As an aside, if you don't think there are likeable characters on the team that's fine, to each his own, but I think they pretty clearly have some unique personalities in Verdugo, Devers, Kiké, Turner, Yoshida, Sale, Casas, etc. In the end the narratives get shaped around the W/L columns and post-season runs.

You think we are in the “great depression” of red sox baseball as Dan thinks? I have no skin in the Boston media fights. And “great depression” might be strong in the long history. But in my lifetime, since the 80s, this is the least I’ve enjoyed the Sox. It is to the point that I might not renew my mlb.com subscription next year — my interest has waned. I have zero investment in most of the roster. I’m here for Raffy, Casas, a couple of pitchers. Duran. That is really it, I think.

I am positive that Many of us here knew someone who was a passionate Red Sox fan who never lived to see the Sox win it all in their lifetime.
if you told that person who never saw the Sox win it all, that after winning 4 WS since 2004, people were calling the Bloom era “the Great Depression of Sox Baseball” they would smack you silly
Again. Dan wrote numerous books during the years up to 2004 about the curse.
He seems to be pissy he cant profit off a desperate fan base that went decades without a WS wins.
He is a hack at this point.

It's more than even that. I'm looking at that photo and thinking of the 1977-1978 teams, both regarded as heartbreakers because they couldn't beat the Yankees when it counted and they didn't have the safety net of the wild card, which is kind of comical now because they actually have three of those suckers and the Sox are still struggling (and failing) to get one of them. That 1977 and 1978 team actually played above .600 ball in back-to-back seasons. They haven't done that since. The next time the Sox would play .600 ball would be in 2004, and even though they'd win two more world series in 2007 and 2013 (they just missed by a percentage point in 2013), the Sox of course would play a ridiculous .667 baseball during the 2018 regular season, so that's just twice since that back-to-back stretch in 1977-1978. As the years roll on, we'll see more photos of nostalgia for the 2003-2004 squads, the 2007-2008 squads, the 2013 team, and the 2018 steamrollers.

He's over the top (what else is new? He's only been like that for 40 years). But the larger point is still there . Backing away from the silliness of the overstatement and lack of historical awareness, the Sox (sort of like the Patriots) are kind of in that "now what?" phase of .500 purgatory where the excitement from the incredible run of championships has dropped into the past - unless things turn around pretty fast they're no longer in the championship era. I'm not expecting a Patriots super bowl this year nor a Red Sox World Series, although I like the Sox' chance of that better than the Patriots. I mean, it's not inaccurate to say that overall fan interest of the Sox is down. They're not obsessed over as much as they're hardly talked about on sports radio and the ballpark isn't sold out the way it had been. I mean that's pretty evident. They're in a lull period. I wouldn't call it a depression because that's silly

This years team is just as likely as not to be playing meaningful games deep in to September, if not October. Look what they have overcome with injuries and ho hum performances so far and are still in the hunt. This keeps me very interested and focused ! There is also the underlying excitement of reinforcements coming from the farm in the next couple years which has been boosted a bit by how Murphy and Walter have contributed recently, Hamilton as well. Young promising hitters, young pitchers !! Baseball is a continuum and I like the direction the team is going in. I hope Bloom remains to finish building what he has started. Cora I think is tired, it would be OK if he goes.
My depression period as a fan was the early 80's after valued players were traded and replacements could not deliver results that the 70's teams did. I had all I could do to watch a couple of Yaz's last games. Baseball was not fun. I did love Dewey though and am glad he hung on to be part of the late 80's run. Then, Roger Clemons brought some buzz and all was better !!

I don't know why anyone gets bothered by the Boston media. They're always going to be cynical and critical. Curly headed boyfriend passed the torch and groomed Mazz. Mazz groomed Tamase. Abraham is all the way in left field or on the moon by himself. One will replace another. Soon they'll be another snot nosed 20 something year old to replace all the old reporters.
It's the way Boston is. It's almost background noise for me. I find it to be comical and entertaining to hear what they say. Some of it ridiculous. Some of it you know to get a reaction (and usually works!).

Yeah the attendance will come and go with winning seasons and losing seasons. It is what it is there. However the fact that the Boston media doesn't talk about the Sox at all actually bothers me. Boston is still a baseball town first. I don't know if the media is trying to push the football narrative that people like that first and foremost, but I can honestly say I've watched 2 games since Brady left. Hopefully that changes soon. The Sox have a better chance to be good over the next 20 years. The Sox are way more interesting. Games on every night. Plenty of narratives, storylines. Deadline talk preview (which baseball is the best in sports in that regard). And nothing from any of them about baseball. Meanwhile the Patriots are looking for a QB in the next 20 years to fall in their lap.

Meanwhile the Patriots are looking for a QB in the next 20 years to fall in their lap. I don't think it's as much the media as much as it's there's not much demand with the Sox at the moment. There was a time when it was Sox 24-7 and the Patriots, even winning super bowls, were trying to keep up. But now there's Mac Jones vs Bill Belichick. The ghost of Tom Brady vs Bill Belichick. Mac Jones vs Bailey Zappe. That does work better for the media as it gives them instant storylines. They can't really talk about the games - there aren't many of those and the games have been dull. I mean, do the Patriots even come back in games they trail anymore? The Patriots were must see when Tom Brady was there - you knew you were seeing history when you watched that guy play. But all I'm seeing now with them is mediocrity, which is kind of what I'm seeing with the Sox, although I do think the Sox have a higher ceiling this year and they do have some interesting players coming up that should help the Sox have a shot at a wild card - I don't see the future Sox being better than Tampa and Baltimore who have some really good young players of their own. Me personally - I enjoy football, but don't have the love of it that I have for baseball. Baseball is a developing story. Football is just once a week, an event if the game means anything, but if it's not a big game it doesn't really give me much to hang onto. I need that every day thing that baseball gives me.
