Verdugo didn’t get snubbed from the team (although he is more deserving than a couple guys who made it) but I sure hope he feels like he was snubbed, seems like someone who benefits from extra motivation

What is Whit Merrifield doing on the team? The fan vote is terrible (especially the two tier which lends itself to fan bases stuffing ballot box) and the player vote is terrible.

What is Whit Merrifield doing on the team? He seems to break brains. Dave O'Brien didn't miss an opportunity all series to talk about what a "good hitter" and a "tough out" he is, despite his having a 92 wRC+ since the start of 2021, and only a 102 for his career. He's a bit of a modern-day Eckstein I guess. Agree with all this but also he’s someone I’m eying as a reasonable FA target for the Red Sox this offseason. Can play second until Yorke or Mayer is up, has some utility versatility, should be relatively cheap

I get that they want the fan vote so they can collect email addresses or something, but can we just turn it into one of those placebo buttons on the elevator that doesn't actually do anything?

I like how it used to be, where you voted at the games. Not voting 25x online like today.

Feeling blessed Paxton isn't on the team

If I were to rank the most deserving players on the Red Sox to make the all-star game, I think I'd have Jansen 10th or so.

My mental model of Kenley Jansen, which is based on nothing at all really, is that he is completely obsessed with the hall of fame and already knows the implications for his candidacy on making his fourth All Star team. I would guess Verdugo or Bello would care the most about making it because it'd be the first time, but that Kenley is next in line. So good for Kenley.
Personally I don't like using the All Star team as as a first half performance award, so I would give the spot to the biggest star on the team, Rafael Devers.

I think you could argue Paxton and Bello for sure. And, of course, the rest of the AL is lucky the unstoppable force known as Yu Chang is out of commission.

I'd have Refsnyder and Winckowski on about the same tier as Jansen.
ADD: Bernardino too... I hadn't quite realized either how good he's been or how many innings he's already pitched (24 to Jansen's 29).

Bello I could see but you can't give it to Paxton. He's started 9 games. and yet pitched nearly twice the innings as Jansen with better stats across the board. Anyways I think julyannmorley has a point about star power and after Devers Jansen is probably the biggest star, maybe Yoshida could contend for that. Would still have liked it to go to Verdugo and generally don’t want our guys pitching in the ASG

Also just saw Devers is up to a 120 wRC+. Gonna be in his normal 130-140 range in no time

Jansen and no Dugo, lol. Just about everybody on this board likes seeing Dugo up in the big spot. And many of us feel like Jansen is too often a high-wire act. It's another example of why the ASG is a joke.

Jansen is the traditional “we don’t know, how bout the guy with saves” pick. He’s not even the *reliever* I trust the most on this team.
And I’d get Merrifield if he were still a Royal… but there is no need for another Blue Jay. I like him as a ballplayer, but can anyone here give a solid argument for him? Not even saying a Sox guy deserved it ahead of him… just… a lot of people?
Add:
I know they are different positions, but Duran is better in every offensive stat than Merrifield. Just sayin’.

I always like guys getting the time off instead of the AS game. I generally agree, but it’s still one of those things that Hall of Fame voters consider. Would be a shame if the difference between Devers making it into the Hall or not is a few All-Star appearances.

Whit was a player selection wasn’t he? The players are frequently as bad or worse than the fans. Also, when I made my original post, they’d only announced the AL pitchers, but not the reserves. When I saw Jansen, I know he was only on because the league added him as the sole team representative.

I don’t know about ten, but in addition to Verdugo and Devers, I’d rather see Yoshida, Durran, Bello and Turner. Frankly, if they were going to choose a name for the Red Sox, Yoshida was the deserving player. His hitting numbers are certainly worthy, his defense holds back the WAR, but that traditionally hadn’t mattered.

For some reason the red sox fanbase has always been horrible about voting in their players.
