Hard to argue against that move.

Hard to argue against that move. Hard to argue with letting any of the coaching staff go. Abraham is reporting the Sox are looking for a new interpreter for Yoshida thinking that the communication between Yoshida and the coaching staff could have been better.

Okay, now fire the coaches that are responsible for the underperforming offense, and the coaches that are responsible for the underperforming defense, so that Alex Cora, the Skillful and Essential Wizard who is the beating heart of the entire Red Sox organization, can finally succeed, no longer betrayed by those above and below him.

I guess Cora isn't the most powerful person in the org afterall.
I do wonder who is the person exerting agency here.

I know there are probably a 1000 reasons why not, but if JBJ was ready to retire, I think he could be an amazing 3rd base coach. Not many people out there as familiar with Fenway's outfield or as good as reading the ball off the bat. Good guy to have on the bench as well as a mentor for the young guys.

Which players underperformed aside from injuries? I would say second-half Doogie and Yoshida. Wong was also burnt out but offense isn't his primary asset.
Otherwise I agree, it was almost all related to injuries.

I would say it's part of ownership challenging him to produce better results. "You have had and will continue to have a big say in which coaches get hired. We're going to spend money and will have a new GM who will reshape the team. We kept you but you still need to produce better results. We'll help you by giving you the opportunity to choose a better staff. If the record on the field doesn't improve, it won't be the GM that we fire next time."

This is a big nothing-burger. Story and Turner were affected by injuries. Devers had a good year but not quite up to his high standards. Hernandez was a big flop, both for the FO and the coaches. Other than that, it's a bunch of names that were not expected to be important contributors (which is more an indictment of the FO than the coaches).

A "nothingburger"? Is there supposed to be some ideological valence to the idea that the hitters underperformed expectations? I don't even know if the coaching is really to blame, but it seems undeniably the case with at least half of the lineup - Devers, Yoshida, Story, Verdugo, Kiké, and Arroyo without question. Turner because of his late season injury, yes, but ZiPS incorporates the possibility of injury so you can't explain away the team-wide underperformance on that basis.

Wasn't Febles working with Devers on his fielding? Cora mentioned that often and Bush was picked by Cora if i am not mistaken. How strong could Cora's standing be in keeping his job?

The starting LF, RF, C, DH, and entire bench are guys that weren't expected to be important contributors? That's over half the offense.
And Devers was far below his high standards. He under-performed his projected wRC+ by nearly 20 points. That's a lot, especially for your best hitter.
