It's entirely possible that the injury is going to be chronic and something he always has to deal with. Wouldn't be the first minor league baseball player to have that happen to him.

When will there be the first set up prospect promotions? Ranaudo and Cecchini are dominating and it looks like they are ready for the next level.

Martin and Younginer appear to be the first promotions of the year. Cecchini won't be promoted until the middle or end of June. Ranaudo won't be promoted until there's a clear spot for him in the Pawtucket rotation. There isn't one right now.

Brandon Workman was promoted to AAA on June 5th.
Xander Bogaerts was promoted to AAA today.
Looks like the promotions are starting.
If Marrero were playing better, one would think he'd be a lock for Bogaerts' spot. But he's not, so I'd expect him to stay in Salem a bit longer.

De La Rosa, Webster, Workman and Aceves when he goes back. The actual prospects get the rotation spots so that they advance sooner, rather than later. Maybe even a chance for Britton in another month or 2 if Aceves sticks on the Sox roster. No reason for the Steven Wright's to be getting starts.

My guess is that we see Cecchini to Portland after the all-star break.
I'd expect him to take over third base full-time in Portland, with Almanzar and Shaw sharing 1B/DH. Meneses will probably move over to short with Bogaerts gone, with Gibson playing second.

Steven Wright is on the 40-man and has already been called up to the majors once this year. He's no star prospect, but they saw enough potential in him to protect him from Rule 5 this offseason. They're not going to give up on him after half a season. If Ranaudo keeps up what he's doing, I could see him getting the bump in late July/early August. And who knows with Britton - if he keeps pitching the way he has in three of his last 4 starts, he'll be bucking for a promotion at that time too.

It's not entirely giving up on Wright, he just doesn't fit into the long term future of the club and probably the short term. Aceves will be the 1st guy they call on to make an emergency start and then probably Webster. If they want Wright to get starts? Make them at Portland and have the people who fit into the long term plans of the club facing the more advanced hitters. When I mentioned Britton before also meant if he continues pitching like he has the last month before getting called up to Pawtucket. He's got a full season's worth of time at Portland and could be promoted, along with Ranaudo so that the team has a chance to get a full look at most of the star SP prospects a full season plus at the AAA level before Lester's 2014 option ends and Dempster's contract expires. That (to me) makes much more sense than giving starts to someone like a Steven Wright, or Chris Hernandez who it looks like is in the pen now anyway.

I'd fully expect more trades out of the surplus of arms at Pawtucket to clear spots for Britton/Ranaudo (by the trade deadline). Obviously, Britton and Ranaudo could also be trade bait, especially Britton.

Rubby DLR called up to Boston... Xander to Pawtucket and I don't think Ranaudo is far behind....
Lots of movement

Rubby DLR called up to Boston... Xander to Pawtucket and I don't think Ranaudo is far behind.... Lots of movement Rubby is only up because the bullpen needs temporary help. He'll come back down for Aceves (most likely) on Tuesday, if not sooner. Just to clarify my prior thoughts on the subject, I think the Sox would need to trade someone in the Pawtucket rotation (or decide that someone like Rubby or Aceves is going to pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the year, which could happen in a couple months if they think they need/want the help) before either Ranaudo or Britton will get promoted. Another possibility in Britton's case would be if they move him to the bullpen. They're not going to just cut Wright, and I think Aceves has shown himself useful enough that just a straight DFA of him, which seemed a possibility before he was sent down, is no longer the most efficient use of resources. All that said, I think we could see such a trade happen from the starting depth in Pawtucket or Portland, if the team would get a comparable value in return.

Fair points Chris. I also think that the Red Sox bullpen continues to run on fumes as their starters are not pitching into the 7th inning and they have too many guys who can only pitch one inning (e.g. Uehara, Bailey, Miller, Breslow). They probably will need to keep someone like Aceves up for a while to provide some more multi-inning protection or the bullpen will be toast by the All-Star break (if not sooner).

Wright is taking up a spot on the 40 man roster that will be one of the 1st cleared anyway over the winter, the team just has too many prospects that will need to be included this year that must be protected and not fringy guys like Fields and Hazelbaker this time around, but guys who are certain to be dearly missed.
I understand that you are taking a company line with Wright here, but there is just no future with him, knuckleballer or not. The 40 man space coming up is going to be tight, even if the team does move a couple of the other pieces who will needs spots come winter time.

Rubby getting called up sounds ominous. It would be tragic if they started thinking of him as a reliever.

Aside from Uehara, they are only one inning guys because Farrell insists on using them as one inning guys. Millet came up as a SP and was in that role as recently as 2011. Breslow was used for more than one inning 14 times in 2012.

I'm hopeful that De La Rosa's future is as a starter, but I think it makes good sense to use him as a reliever this season in Boston. My hope is that by the end of the season he can take the 8th inning role and give them a performance reminiscent of 2010 and midseason 2011 Daniel Bard. He certainly has the stuff for it and the bullpen can most certainly use his help. It would also help keep his innings down as I would guess the Sox wouldn't want him to pitch much more than 120 innings this year. I'm hopeful that De La Rosa can do for the Sox what K-Rod did for the Angels in late 2002.
It would seem that the reigns wouldn't fully come off of him until the 2015 season. He might ultimately be a closer/setup guy, but I would hope the Sox would indeed continue to explore the starting option with him down the road and only go to the bullpen option long-term if he doesn't make it as a starter.

If RDLR is really featuring three + to ++ pitches, than he is a starter, unless the Sox do not think he is capable of handling the workload of a starter.

He came out of the bullpen a few times with the Dodgers. You have no reason to make this statement. He already has had success as a starter at the major league level, even though he was pushed to get there long before he was actually ready. The redsox bullpen is already stupidly deep. If you look at their actual usage and compare to other teams, no one in the sox bullpen is being overused. Miller and Tazawa were brought up as starters and could probably pitch considerably more than they have been. Rubby has the best stuff of any prospect we have, there is no reason to want to convert him.

Rubby has the best stuff of any prospect we have, there is no reason to want to convert him. I do have reason to make that statement. I've seen several of his starts this year. I think that allows me to have an opinion despite not having the scouting ability of our guys on here. He has two plus pitches with questionable command, a third pitch that isn't quite there, and a fastball that reaches 100. That speaks bullpen. Don't think of it as a negative. He can be a great future closer. There's a difference between "you have no reason to make this statement" and "this person differs from my opinion." I'm not the first, nor the last, to suggest De La Rosa's future is in the bullpen. And to clarify, I'm saying future. That's down the road. I'm not suggesting they place him in the bullpen tomorrow for good. They're going to use him as a starter for as long as they can, then venture into moving him.

I'm pointing out that the club likely has a certain opinion of the player based on the fact that they added him to the 40-man. That's all.
