Verdugo could rake there. Maybe a perfect fit for him. Excited to take a look at the prospects after the UConn game

At the very least we get a laugh out of the deal with Dick Fitts
If Verdugo stays there he’s popping 20 over that short porch
Weissert is a useful up and down guy, Fitts is the obvious prize. Couldn’t know less about the other guy other than BIG BUBBA

The worst part is Verdugo seems like a real nice fit for the yankees roster makeup with his lefty bat and solid contact ability and obviously the short porch. They needed someone like him to balance out the lineup.

90+ pitches and pumping 96? I like that. Slider looks good too

Well breslow did say he values control and command as he feels they can develop a pitchers stuff better so than a pitchers command/control so it sounds like he went out and got his type of P.

Summary based on my very quick scan:
Fitts: Main piece, AAA SP. MLB Pipeline has him as the best SP prospect in Sox system now (#11 in Yankees farm, #5-9 in Sox), sounds like mid rotation ceiling
Weissert: on the older side MiLB relief pitcher who’s been really solid in minors but anywhere from 27 to unranked in Yankees farm, probably just a depth piece… had some run in MLB this year 20 IP / ~4.00 ERA/FIP
Judice: 2023 8th round pick, signed for slot, 6’8, low to mid 90’s fastball… 125 on MLB Draft Big Board.. lotto ticket

I think this is great return for Verdugo.
But this certainly solidifies the Mookie Betts trade as one of the worst trades in baseball history.

Count me in the camp that believes that Abreu can be a better player than Verdugo this year. One year of Verdugo at 10 million got a guy with mid rotation ceiling and a lottery ticket 6.8 righty? Seems like a win to me.

If Verdugo gets moved in the Soto deal I want Craig fired on the spot

There is ALOT to process here over the next couple hours/days about the trade and Verdugo’s tenure here. But the point that sticks out (to me at least) is how little they valued/fear Verdugo that they were willing to send him to their arch rival… I guess this explains Cora FaceTiming Boone implying the Yankees had just made a move? If the yankees turn around and deal Verdugo as the main or one of the main pieces to get soto I'd be a little bit pissed as a Sox fan but not going to jump to any conclusions yet. I mean they can get Soto regardless of us giving them Verdugo or not. The pieces they sent away weren’t (allegedly) what the Padres wanted anyway. They want King, Thoroe, etc. If Verdugo is flipped, I’d imagine Yankees would need to pay down his salary for cost-cutting SD? How does that work for an arbitration player?

A bonus to this trade is pissed off Verdugo reigniting the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry (and a downside is he's definitely going to play really well against the Red Sox).

I'm going to wait and reserve judgement about this one. It feels like a move that's part of something bigger. Whether that's freeing up salary or accumulating pieces.
Also, I'd think Cora would be happy with this move and possibly encouraged it

What if Duggie leaves the Bronx after one year and Dick gives the Yankees Fitts for the rest of the decade a la Whitlock? How fun is THAT thought?

Fitts 2023 season season makes it easy to believe he will make it. Pretty good return for a rental that the whole industry knew the Sox were done with. I need a new favorite player now.

I understand the sentiment but it’s bad business to worry about what the Yankees will do with Verdugo now. I hope Craig made the best deal for the Red Sox at the moment; you can’t really worry about anything else, especially hypotheticals. Sure, Verdugo could be traded for Soto, but you don’t make this trade if you don’t like the return, and then Verdugo is out of your hands. Too much 3D chess creates transaction paralysis.
Add: wonder if this trade is a precursor to a Rays trade insofar as that there is little doubt that Craig will engage with a division rival and they may respond to inquiries.

Verdugo on 1 year/$9.5 million just doesn't have a ton of value. If Fitts is a semi-acceptable 5th starter for a year and a middle reliever for two more years then the Red Sox easily win this trade.

I don’t think Abreu is that much of a drop off from Verdugo. I like the freeing up $10M and continuing to build on the farm + adding what looks to be a pretty solid depth RP.
Everyone is going to hate this but this is a Chaim-esque move. The real question now is does Craig follow this up with something big to strike the perfect balance of Chaim-esque moves & Dombrowski-esque moves…

So Mookie Betts for Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice, Jeter Downs and Connor Wong So, Mookie is a second baseman now. We need a 2b. Maybe we can get him back so Dodgers can have the $ to sign Ohtani
