Adding some pitching depth now could come in quite handy should they later need to deal from the Pivetta, Houck, Whitlock, Bello, Crawford inventory to make one of those hoped-for B I G additions, no?
Knowing absolutely nothing about the acquisitions, I like the trade. I'd rather watch Abreu than Verdugo.

If there was an initial thought of this trade possibly keeping the Yankees powder dry on Soto (in the way the Twins sicced Josh Donaldson/IKF on the Yankees so they could swipe Correa…) certain Yankees media folks are suggested they’re still locked on Soto and might even nab him by tonight, with Verdugo staying.
It would be kinda weird to get Verdugo and Soto in one night… only to put Judge and his gargantuan contract, coming off a toe injury, in CF? But I’m sure the Yankees are more than happy with that after some outfields they’ve run out the last few years.

Why doesn’t anyone think Verdugo can’t play CF, I think he’d be fine

Why doesn’t anyone think Verdugo can’t play CF, I think he’d be fine He hasn't done it since 2021 and his defensive metrics weren't very good. I'm sure he could handle it alright but he wouldn't be a plus defender there by any means.

Verdugo spent the last two months of last year pulling everything and grounding out to second base nearly every game. This might be a weird take… but is that short porch in Yankee Stadium right field actually going to be 100% good for him if it incentivizes his worst bad habits on the verge of a free agent year?

Why doesn’t anyone think Verdugo can’t play CF, I think he’d be fine Last year was his only good year he`s had in the OF. I`m not sold on his defense yet. The yankees really should slide judge over to RF. That would put verdugo in CF. I`d watch more yankee games just to watch verdugo play CF.

Why I Like:
-LHH OF is biggest area of excess -Start of a sample to assess of Breslow acquired pitchers (no more Cali HS SS's) -More $ to go shopping for SP
Why I dislike:
-Verdugo with an axe to grind in a walk year = potential for big season and draft compensation for NYY

I’m good with this trade. I think Verdugo was generally underappreciated as a player because he came with the weight of being part of the Mookie trade. Certainly fair to have increased expectations because of that, but doesn’t change the fact that he was a generally reliable outfield guy for multiple years, and there’s value in that. But in a contract year, in a bit of a positional logjam, and with a seemingly limited ceiling established, this is a good return. I never thought he’d get a legit top 100 guy or anything in that realm so to get a promising starting pitching prospect with traits our new pitching guru head of baseball ops is on record valuing, that’s something I can get behind in theory.

This fills one of the Red Sox biggest holes (triple-A pitching depth) while opening salary to sign a righthand hitter. Don't love that a high-ish upside guy just went to the Yankees, but makes sense for the Red Sox. Is Verdugo really a high upside guy anymore? I wouldn't really consider him to be that. He is what he is at this point, a solid LHH corner OFer who is going to put up roughly 2 WAR. He has value but I personally dont see much projection left in his game. He'll hit more HRs there so his numbers will probably look slightly better for them I suppose. 'High-ish' upside, yes. He's been a 2-war guy, outside of a shortened 2020, but he's had more potential limited by a seeming laissez-faire attitude. The loss of speed during his early-to-mid 20s is jarring. Glad the Red Sox aren't signing him to an extension but can definitely see him committing himself in a contract year and putting up a big season. For that reason, I'd prefer he wasn't in the division, but I'm sure they took the best deal, which is more important.

Love to read this, I’ll take it as a W. I do expect a career year from Verdugo, but still this return is more than fair.

Interesting how physically comparable Judice is to the actual pitchers the team drafted in the 8th and 9th round this past year.

So Mookie Betts for Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice, Jeter Downs and Connor Wong Correction - Rental (60 games in 2020) of Betts plus $46,000,000 of David Price’s contract for the players mentioned (and their years of controllability…

So, Mookie is a second baseman now. We need a 2b. Maybe we can get him back so Dodgers can have the $ to sign Ohtani I'd just love to see what Dodgers GM would say on the phone if the Sox offered that package for Betts. Except you’ve left out a really important piece of the package/return…4 years of Alex Verdugo for about 7-8 WAR.

I am a Verdugo fan, but I am excited to see Abreu as the Sox everyday RF. Sure Verdugo has more certainty, but someone else described him earlier in this post as average and I agree he is exactly that. Maybe Abreu doesn’t pan out, but I’d rather see what happens next year with him in RF than what we’d most likely get from Verdugo, especially for around $9M less.

I wonder how many expected him to be traded to the hated Yankees..I sure didn't. I wonder if this opens up resigning Adam duvall. I wouldn't hate that. He was what kept them competitive early in the year until that injury and never was the same after that. Maybe it is too much of a risk considering his complete collapse after coming back, but I would like to see him back now that Yoshida is DH.
Boy I am greedy I want Turner back too. Where you gonna put all these guys?

Its a meh trade for a meh player. I would have like to have seen Boston trade Verdugo for an infielder but lets see if Breslow can make anything out of these guys. Yankees are more win now than Boston roster wise.

Over the last two seasons he would have had 56% more home runs if he played all his games at Yankee stadium. Angry Verdugo in a stadium that fits him well on a walk year does seem like a recipe for a big season. Still fine with the return and all, but I think the Yankees will get 3+ WAR from him despite whatever the projections say.

I’m fine with it. Probably addition by subtraction here and I can only image with two higher profile issues last season what it was like day to day. To me he was a platoon player with his L/R splits and a sub .700 OPS away from Fenway. We get three interesting arms to hopefully jumpstart our new pitching program in addition to shedding $9M we can spend elsewhere.

Joe Doyle saying the Yankees overpaid makes my breakfast a lot nicer; thanks for posting. With Campbell and these three, Breslow has added four good arms with options, three of whom can be good AAA depth, instead of some of the "signing of the week" crap we used last year. This trade has three guys who throw hard and have good sliders. We don't have a lot of stars, but "no scrubs" is also a good strategy.

If it’s 28% more, that’s still less than 20 in a year. 56% more still doesn’t get him to 20 most years. He simply didn’t come close to his potential.
