Would not be surprised if Robertson provides real value for the Cards and this trade works out well for them. He had a nice 2023 season and ended on a high note having a lot of success with a new pitch.
But after adding Campbell and Weissert, and probably two starters, the Red Sox are set to have too much major league caliber pitching. They're going to have decent players toiling away in Worcester, and Robertson likely wasn't going to be in the front of the line to reach the majors.
And it does not really make sense to judge the move this way, but it's hard to not feel good about getting O'Neill for less than the full haul for two months of Kiké Hernandez.

From the MLBTR writeup:
"It appeared that he had fallen out of favor in St. Louis over that time. In early 2023, he and manager Oli Marmol got in a bit of a spat, where the skipper publicly admonished O’Neill for a perceived lack of hustle. Though the outfielder pushed back on the idea that he wasn’t giving full effort and also seemed displeased with Marmol making the disagreement public."
The perfect Verdugo replacement

O’Neill had a higher 2023 xwOBA than: - Bellinger - Semien - Springer - Machado - Trea Turner - Raleigh - Contreras - Correa - Yoshida - Justin Turner - Nate Lowe - Verdugo - T Hernandez

No complaints about the trade but I was wondering if the board here preferred him over a return of Duvall?

Will say though, O'Neill's health is a pretty big issue, a bunch of different injuries all over his body and the over/under on games played would probably be like 80. That said, those injuries also probably hampered his on field performance, so if they luck out and he's healthy his actual performance might be better than what he's done the last couple years.

O'Neill checks the boxes by having some RH pop and very importantly gold glove caliber defensive ability. He is a bounce back candidate at the plate more than a sure thing, but the low salary is worth the shot. I would have been thrilled to get him straight up for Kiki at the deadline, so the cost of 1/2 the Kiki haul and a meh prospect feels pretty good to me.

Interesting. Are we sure he isn’t taking Refsnyder’s role? He’s played 96 and 72 games the last two years - partly from injuries but also partly from the Cardinals occasionally platooning him. If they want the option to start Duran, Rafaela, & Abreu, it’s easier to do that with an O’Neill trade than like convincing a free agent to be OF insurance in case the young guys falter.

Santos was one of my unranked crushes. No loud tools, just throws strikes and gets guys out. Always young for the level throughout his climb. Can’t remember why he missed last season but he’s pitching well in the DR now. Was looking forward to seeing what he could do in a full season in Worcester.

Didn’t realize O’Neill had a 143 wRC+ and 5.5 fWAR in 138 games in 2021. He’s fallen off since then (98 wRC+), but there’s some upside there.

To me this is basically Duvall-but-younger, and thus cheaper and actually able to play CF with some regularity. I like it.

I like O'Neill as a complementary piece and the Red Sox gave up very little to get him so I like the trade – but these numbers are massively propped up by his one good year in 2021. His barrel% in the last two years has been around 11-12%.
Hopefully health had more to do with it than a fluky single year where it all broke the right way.

We are watching Breslow & company fill out the dance card. The potential bounce back, gold glove outfielder, all three positions, what had been good base running... classic buy low to meet a glaring need. Here's to his good health.

SO the basic 2024 OF corps has been transformed to: Abreu (L) RF -CF -LF Duran (L) LF O'Neill (R) CF-LF-RF Rafaela (R) CF-RF-LF Yoshida (L) LF
More balance, a chance for a health related rebound and it gives the kids a chance to prove themselves. Plus with Anthony perhaps knocking on the door there is only a one year commitment along with a extra $4mm to throw around. What's not to really like about this trade?

That’s still well above League average.

Sign me up for the O'Neill and Duran bodybuilding show! Wasn’t his father like a bodybuilding champ or something? I remember reading that on lookout landing blog when he was traded by Seattle.
