Yoshida would have looked good in one of those RBI spots

It's hard to know because he could have been upset at the lack of interest from Boston. You can't dump me, I dumped you! I don't think there's any reported offer by Boston. I think if they gave him 5-6 million more than Arizona it would have been a dream to be here. Nicer scenario than making him the Yoshida of the pitching staff with a 5 year deal. And playing devil’s advocate a bit here. But, had Giolito or Pivetta remained healthy, it likely would have resulted in Tanner Houck plugging into Winckowski or Slaten’s current role. He is clearly capable of more. If he is truly emerging, which I believe he is, there is a high opportunity cost in the scenario where he’s buried in the pen for a 1 year Montgomery. It is curious who was the odd man out had Giolito stayed healthy or if they signed Montgomery. It was likely either Houck or Whitlock and my gut tells me Houck to the pen. If that's the case that would have been unfortunate, but considering how fast we got to Criswell I don't think it would have mattered much.

The Valdez - Rafaela lineup stretch were running has to be in contention for worst 5 batter stretch in an MLB lineup this year I'm only going to disagree because Wong has been mashing but if he/Mcguire turn back into pumpkins then yeah

a quick inning is exactly what Houck needed.
Interesting, all three singles were by left handed batters with 2 strike counts and they too the ball the other way. Maybe Houck should pitch inside on those occasions.

Valdez had a great opportunity to start the year, and he hasn't done much with it. Really seemed he'd be a good bet to at least hit right-handed pitching well. He's starting to make me impatient for Grissom, this bottom of the lineup is brutal right now. He’s definitely been a lot better defensively, so kudos to him for improving. But yeah - he’s a guy who (at least at the moment) is best suited to come up in short bursts in case of an injury or be used as a bench piece, and as of now you’re asking him to be the starting second baseman for like a month/month and a half.

Lively's filling up the strikezone because there's not many who can hurt him in this lineup.

Turns out this team didn't really need Montgomery, Snell or Yamamoto. They needed Soto.

This has to be the worst hitting infield in the majors.

it's pretty hard to succeed when you have the (lack of) eye of ceddanne but also swing and miss so much at the pitches in the zone.

Wasting great starting pitching with inept hitting is just sad.

The bench tonight would appear to be Reese, Hamilton, a supposedly unavailable Devers, and then Yoshida - whose availability is also somewhat unclear?

Cora said Yoshida is healthy And yet also sat in lieu of Tyler Heinmen at DH the other day 🤷♂️ If Masa pinch hits for someone I guess it would be one of the infielders and then you bring in Hamilton?

Tbh, his improved defense is markedly more important than anything he could’ve flashed offensively in a small sample size in the absence of improved defense. Now, in theory, he could be a second division regular. Had he caught an offensive hot streak and showed he still was defensively unplayable, he still would present the same dilemma. Now he’s a decent secondary trade chip for a club in need of a 2B.

SO PLAY HIM!!! Refsnyder can play 1B. Yeah I don’t believe that something isn’t going on there. It makes no sense What could it possibly be? Doesn’t seem like a behavioral issues guy. He has a contract they want off the books and the best way to do that is let him play. If they play it like this, it’s full sunk cost. Did he pull an Ime Udoka on Mrs. Henry? I don’t get it.
