I'm not a big fan of bunting either but I think Ellsbury should bunt more to. Teams aren't even bringing the third baseman in on him much anymore.

The words "love" and "bunt" should never be used in the same sentence. Fast player, not hitting for power or average, bunting for a hit = good thing Sacrificing with runners on first and second = bad thing Moreover, Ellsbury should be expected to be successful on at least 45% on such attempts considering his speed and the context on which he bunts. EDIT: I say 45%, but that is probably conservative considering 44.7% of Ellsburys bunts have gone for hits and that includes sacrifice bunts.

Another thing that is seen less these days in bunting for hits seems to be bunting down the first base line. This could be especially so for Ellsbury as they are often playing him farther back at 1st.

I'd like to see some statistics about bunting against the shift. Don't think they utilize it enough.

Ah, I remember the old days when we were worried whether the Sox could afford to keep Ellsbury. Sure looks like JBJ is going to be an adequate replacement. Still would like a left-handed hitting 3-hole hitter. There doesn't appear to be many of those available. If any at all.

Papi just rakes in Minnesota
Edit: well...I mean since he left the Twins organization. I remember this Papi quote:

Is Dempster getting squeezed? Can't find a good stream. 5 bb'S IN 3 INNINGS? The kid bails him out by swinging at the first pitch.

Gameday has a lot of those balls as strikes, FWIW.

Gotta hand it to WMB, he's been looking good at the dish over the last week or so. Also Gomes has looked good over the last couple days IMO too.

Why is Dempster still out there? He should have been gone three batters ago.

OK, I think we might over criticize Farrell on bullpen management, but leaving a guy in just so he can be eligible for the win is stupid. Maybe Farrell honestly thought Dempster had the best chance of getting this out, but...

I'm torn about how to bitch about Farrell here. Do I go with the Grady Little reference, or Dusty Baker?

I'm torn about how to bitch about Farrell here. Do I go with the Grady Little reference, or Dusty Baker? I remember reading a former manager's take on going to the mound...I think it might have been Don Zimmer, but I am unsure...anyway... His point was that if he (the manager) goes to the mound intending to pull a pitcher, he should just take the ball and not engage in a conversation with the departing pitcher. This manager noted that every time he allowed a pitcher argue his way into facing the next batter, there were disastrous results.

For some reason I kept searching for a stream and found one in the fourth inning. That's some pretty amatuerish pitching tonight.

Win or lose this is a bad game for the sox. The bullpen can't pitch this many innings without an implosion down the road.

Ryan Domuit attempting to score on a fly ball 15 feet behind first base is not smart base running. Even though Pedey had to turn and throw it was not going to be close.

Lavarnway had the time, didn't panic, took the hit, made the tag. Nice execution (on a stupid play).
If they win this one it isn't going to be due to good decision making ... including the Twins.

Not for nothing Alex Wilson only threw 2 pitches. Miller looked good yesterday. I not a big fan of Mortenson. I keep wondering there is soon much more talent in the minors. I can see RDLR going 2 every time. But they want to stretch him out. (Nice shot Ortiz).
Too bad Buch didn't have this support. I can't believe Dempster couldn't get 5. I mean Felix got 5.

Dempster was left in the game for one reason, and that's the five innings required to get a W. Does anyone want to advance the argument that managers are acting on special information that we as fans don't know about? Someone should please bring that up.
Also, the way Lavarnway just got trucked on a play that wasn't remotely close should be illegal. Baseball isn't a contact sport. Obviously you're going to get collisions on close plays, but when a guy is clearly out like that... I mean, you might as well be punching the catcher in the face to avoid the tag. It's basically the same thing.

Completely off topic: I know the Red Sox typically require a player to be inducted into the HOF, but how does Ortiz not have his number retired?

I mean, at this rate, Ortiz may very well end up with HOF-type numbers. EDIT: assuming that the voters eventually get over DH-phobia, but I think they will.

I love it this guy Diamond was garbage this time. What happen to the Twins by the way. They get a nice new Stadium and are worse off. ( sweet Nava).
Yeah I would of went with Wilson instead of Mortenson. Today.
