Maybe it's because the Sox $h!tty season has caused a lack of paying attention fully on my part. But Miguel Cabrera has an incredible shot to win the triple crown and I feel like its not being talked about. The guy leads the league in hitting and RBI's and is just 2 homers shy of Hamilton's league leading 42. What a hitter, his line for the year rests at .333/.396/.612/1.008 40HR 129RBI 60:88 BB:K with 78XBH in 567 AB.s thus far. 4 days later, and it's more than a great shot. Cabrera may practically have it in the bag. He's now tied with Hamilton in HR with Hamilton due to return ....... whenever. Hamilton is also the only guy with a shot to catch him in RBI. And that 7-point lead in the BA race is actually a mountain when you consider the difficulty in moving your average very much with all the AB built up at this point. Mauer went 3-4 in game 1 today, and his averae went up ONE POINT to .326. Cabrera would really have to go into a swoon from here on out NOT to win it. Could you imagine if a Yankee or Red Sox player were doing this? It would blow everything else off the sports news.

Am I wrong in thinking that Colby Lewis did the Rangers a favor by taking a 1 year $2 million extension?
He'd get more as a free agent, no?

Miami looking to cut payroll. Figured I'll put it here since there isn't a general offseason thread yet. www.miamiherald.com/2012/09/24/3017347/miami-marlins-jeffrey-loria-comments.htmlAfter going “all in” this season with a franchise-record $95 million roster payroll, the Miami Marlins will likely scale back in 2013 to a more moderate figure, somewhere in the $70 million to $80 million range, sources said. Multiple sources said the team lost money this season due largely to a high payroll and lower-than-anticipated attendance at the new ballpark. As a result, the Marlins will not be repeating last year’s buying binge, when they spent more than $190 million on free agents. The Marlins already have 2013 salary commitments of $65.5 million for eight players: Josh Johnson ($13.75 million), Mark Buehrle ($12 million), Ricky Nolasco ($11.5 million), Jose Reyes ($10 million), Heath Bell ($9 million), John Buck ($6.5 million), Greg Dobbs ($1.6 million) and Jacob Turner ($1.175 million).

Whatever Josh Reddick was doing the first half of the year, he hasn't been able to keep up. He's in a tailspin, with a full season line of .243 / .306 / .460 / .766. The drop off in HR rate was expected but he's having tremendous difficulty making it to first base safely.
Fun fact: Reddick's OPS through age 25 (.742) is now lower than that of his sometime idol, Jeff Francoeur (.743).

Well it looks like the Astros have gone with Bo Porter at manager. Don't know much about him but the few articles I did see on him made me want us to take a look at him.
Also Alex Gordan took a HR away from Miggy last night. What if that prevented him from the triple crown? A robbed HR in the last week.

Speaking of Alex Gordon, he has secretly become awesome. Perfect case for why we need to be patient with prospects - he got the bust label early on, but he's having his second consecutive season in the top 10 in the AL in WAR. He won't get many top-10 MVP votes because his value comes in doubles and defense rather than traditional triple crown stats and because his team stinks, but he's at that level.

Best part of that video is that Gordon was basically playing him less than 5 feet in front of the track. It wasn't even an amazing, athletic play - he kind of strolls over to the fence, waits, and then reaches up and grabs it like it's a pop-up because that fence is so short.

You know that's something similar to what I've always thought about some of these amazing catches. Yeah in most cases there is a certain amount of athleticism involved but there's also a luck factor the ball gets hit to just the right place for that play to happen. Not to mention the occasional late break some outfielder gets on the ball making a routine play more spectacular.

Is there anyone who doesn't prefer the new Wild Card format to the old Wild Card format?

Is there anyone who doesn't prefer the new Wild Card format to the old Wild Card format? Right here. .500 teams in a playoff race and a one game playoff? Terrible in my opinion.

I'm not a huge fan either. One game is a pure roll of the dice, nothing more.

.500 teams in a playoff race and a one game playoff? Terrible in my opinion. .500? The teams on the outside looking in right now are the Angels, Rays, Dodgers, and Brewers -- pretty legit for the most part. The one game playoff makes the division title mean something again, a meaningful step closer to pre-WC tradition.

I prefer the NFL version with the top two teams getting a first round bye. That's worth playing hard in the regular season for

Two home runs for Reddick today, to give him 31 for the season - so far. So he did make it to 30, though I don't know that this qualifies as "blowing by" that number. What has been encouraging over the last few days was to watch him re-focus, take his time, and start to wait for his pitch. He seems to be remembering that stuff. Anyway, not bad for a first full season. He still needs to be more patient, but he's helped Oakland's season along.

By that I mean periods of dominance and periods of helplessness. If he ever does "figure it out" though he could be missed

He's been streaky since he hit Portland, no doubt about that. He's only 25, though. The OPS is pushing back up but he won't make .800 this year. Still, he's got a leg up on everyone the Sox have been able to put out there except for Ross, and Ross didn't play every day early on.
The key for him has always been the same one. He gets so hot that he starts to swing at everything. That's left over from his days in the lower minors when he could and did hit anything and everything. Old habits die hard. When he starts to zone in on the strike zone and where the pitch is he does okay.
Anyway, looks like he's heating up again and with the playoffs just around the corner that's none too soon.

Homer Bailey with a no-hitter. What else can the baseball gods possibly come up with this year?

After living in the Baltimore-Washington area all my adult life, now that the totally unexpected prospect of an Oriole-Nats World Series presents itself, I'll be gone. We're moving to Portland, Oregon next week.
It's not exactly the best choice for a baseball fanatic since they turned their minor league baseball stadium into a soccer stadium, but there were good reasons for the move. We get to be with our daughter when she has her first child in December.
Thank goodness for the Internet, Sox Prospects and MLB.com.

Great game between Detroit and Oakland tonight. Detroit led 3-1 going into the ninth. It might have been closer but Stephen Drew, who'd just driven in the first run with a double to make it 2-1, tried to stretch it to a triple and was thrown out. Otherwise he was standing on second with no outs. Detroit retired the next two batters. They scored another run and it stayed that way till the ninth.
Reddick led off with a single against Valverde. The Josh Donaldson smashed a double that just missed clearing the fence to send Reddick to third. Seth Smith found the gap in right for another double and the score was tied. A pop-up and a strike out later, and Crisp launched the first pitch he saw between second and first. The outfielder - Garcia - tried for a quick scoop and throw but the ball went under his glove. Smith scored to end the game.
Reddick popped Crisp with a cream pie in the face during the post-game interview and someone else dumped the Gatorade onto his head. I don't think he noticed at all, he was so jazzed. They may just pull out this series, and with the game in Oakland I'd give them the advantage at this point.
