Arod is sitting tonight with Ibanez at DH and Chavez at 3rd base. Just think, the MFYs are stuck with him for another 5 years and at least $119 million. Good luck with that.

That doubles for the Red Sox as well.

That doubles for the Red Sox as well. I sincerely hope we don't go after him. I either think there's so little chance of it or just can't stand the though of it enough to the point where I don't even consider it a possibility right now.

I can't believe the talk (maybe just hopeful NY-ers) about A-ROd getting traded on ESPN and other news outlets this morning. Would anyone, let alone the Marlins (the supposed favorites) in NL with no DH really want A-Rod at this point? I guess it all depends on how much of the salary the MFY are paying.
Please MLB GM's, don't bail them out them out of that stupid contract!!!

Congratulation to the Tigers! Happy Yankee Elimination Day! Now this is spiteful in a good way. I wasn't crazy about the talks of the Sox being spoilers because it hurt us draft pick wise but something like thi sis perfectly acceptable.

A-Rod has 10-5 no trade protection so why would he accept and why would anybody conceivably trade for him right now? Again I say complete BS.

Rooting for the Red Sox to beat the Yankees and knock them out of the playoffs just to spite is a bad thing WHEN IT HURTS THE TEAM. I want the highest draft pick possible for the Sox no matter what. Remember how close we were to the number 6 pick? That was more important to me than knocking the Yankees out of the playoffs. I'm glad they lost they lost and yes I wish they never made it in but I don't want that at our expense.

Disastrous finish for the Bronx bummers. The Sox' season was truly lousy from top to bottom of course. That said, we need to be grateful every day for the near-miraculous u-turn that led them away from the path of an aging, overpayed, and over-the-hill roster like NYs.
I still can't believe the team dumped all that salary, and that they got four players back including two outstanding pitching prospects. It's going to be much harder for the Yankees to pull that sort of Magic trick. There aren't that many deep pockets. The Sox were really fortunate, and smart, to find the deepest ones of all to tap out.
As for the Yankees, it isn't just A-Rod who's headed downhill, though his crater is the biggest. Teixeira's numbers have been headed in the same direction for quite a few years and he barely cleared .800 OPS in 2012. And while Jeter had a decent year, he'll be 39 and rehabing off an injury. They'll need to resign guys like Kuroda and Swisher if they can since both were a big part of their success. But the weight of the contracts they carry has got to be a burden even for them.
Thankfully, the Sox had that weight lifted from their shoulders.

For luxury tax and revenue sharing rebate purposes it's the AAV that matters, not the player salary in that given year.

... 2013 Mark Teixeira $23.125 C.C. Sabathia $23 Alex Rodriguez $29 Derek Jeter $17 Robinson Cano $15 Curtis Granderson $13 Phil Hughes ?? Brett Gardner ?? Ivan Nova ?? Pedro Feliciano $4.5 Rafael Soriano $14 Mariano Rivera ?? TOTAL=$138.625 Hughes is in his third year of arbitration. He was making $3.4 million but he just won 16 games. Hard to see him getting less than $5 - 6$ million out of that. That's before we get to Nova, or Gardner. All three will probably round out to around $10 million. And as I mentioned above, two guys they'd likely want back would be Kuroda and Swisher. So you can tack on another $20 million without over-thinking it. Finally, Rivera has expressed a strong desire to return and he won't be pitching for anyone else it's safe to say. That's probably another $15 million. The problem is that this tiers out pretty clearly. The oldest players are getting the most money while producing less and less. The next tier is making less but bringing a little more, and so on. The first four on that list suck up $92 million all by themselves that's where the lack of flexibility really comes from. Do you want to pay guys $25-$30 million when they're producing at half that or less? That's about where Rodriguez and Teixeira are at this point. And watching CC at the end of season reminded me of how many innings he'd pitched. I think he's a better bet to keep on delivering, but they'll need to re-sign or replace him shortly at some point (forgot he re-signed till 2017). That won't be cheap given the expectations everyone involved with the team has. It's those expectations that generate a lot of the venom in places like New York and Boston when teams don't deliver. It creates a lot of artificial pressure on a team. Cashman is really sharp and he has a big pile of cash to work with. He's going to need all that and more this year. Those expectations are going to be there in spades after the rotten finish to the season. Edit: Well, this is why I don't do this for a living. Peter Abraham wrote a piece that makes it look as if he ghost-edited my comments on this page, and a half-day before I started in. He hits on just about the same points I've laid out, and he even throws in a prediction of sorts: The Red Sox were a wretched team and finished in last place, a whopping 26 games behind the first-place Yankees. But the Sox might actually have the advantage moving forward.
Seeing Jeter go down and watching the Yankees wrestle with Rodriguez only confirmed that idea. I'd take the might out of there and replace it with do. The Sox have with one mighty blow, smitten their aging past, and carved it into a much brighter looking future. That's going to be much harder for the bummers to do.

The Ozzie Guillen dismissal has some striking resemblances to the Bobby Valentine situation.
Both were brash, outspoken, break-the-mold managers who got into trouble by their comments; the former about Fidel Castro, he latter about Kevin Youkilis.
I will miss them both because, not only were they good baseball people, but entertaining as well.

Kyle Weiland outrighted to Triple A by the Astros. Its interesting that Mark Melancon had a rejuvenation in the second half of the season for the Red Sox after a disasterous first half. Lowrie's first half 2012 stats still bend the trade in Houston's favor, however.

Old friend Mike Aviles spun to the Indians, along with a minor leaguer for Esmil Rogers. As they say in Toronto: "Mike, we hardly knew ye".

It appears that the Marlins are pulling the plug on their Miami re-branding rather quickly. Rosenthal and Morosi are saying amongst others, Reyes, J Johnson, and Buehrle to Toronto for Escobar, Hechavarria, and Henderson Alvarez and others. AA is at it again.

I view this as good for two reasons. One is that I'm not a Josh Johnson fan and if we had traded for him I think we would've regretted it and two is that this means Toronto is all in next year so to me that means one more team we'd conceivably have to climb over to compete...which means I hope Ben is less likely to try it.
