I'm pretty sure Crawford wasn't suffering from depression. I think he had a tough go of it and handled it extremely poorly. Pretty much did what a lot of people suggested he would. How so? This surely is a matter of opinion and can be disagreed with. Also, I feel the need to remind you that I like Crawford and never boo'd him, etc . I think he took his feelings to work with him and had them on full display. Poor body language etc. I'm. To saying its easy but he's a professional and should have donea better job not wearing his negative feelings. He did a good job keeping his mouth shut but there is more to it than that. The environment sucked but he was part of that and should carry blame or it. As should many others, but that doesn't make Cawfords attitude ok.

Jurickson Profar has informed the Rangersd he will not be participating in the WBC. "It was a tough decision for him and we left that decision up to him," Daniels said. "He understands the landscape and the situation and he communicated to us that he wants to put himself in the best position to make the club. I give him a lot of credit. It was something he wrestled with and went back-and-forth on and an opportunity to play for his country and with some of his friends he's been working out with all winter and at the same time he's committed to putting himself in position to try to make this team. We're going to let that play out over the course of the spring." Any chance this means Xander spends any time at SS, or is Simmons the incumbent? espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/8959186/texas-rangers-jurickson-profar-play-holland-world-baseball-classic

Simmons will be the starting SS. Xander has been told he will play 3B and DH.

In trades that I didn't see coming the DBacks trade two DSL pitchers to the Cubs for Tony Campana.

This question shows you may not know much about true depression. There's a huge difference between someone suffering from depression and being depressed in the way we talk about being depressed. We talk about being depressed when we are down in the dumps. Someone suffering from depression is on a whole different level. I'm pretty sure Crawford wasn't suffering from depression. I think he had a tough go of it and handled it extremely poorly. Pretty much did what a lot of people suggested he would. Ahh, thank you for explaining depression and semantics to me. You can be "pretty sure" of whatever you want, but wildly speculating on the mental wellbeing of a complete stranger is irresponsible and childish. What did he handle poorly? The chronic injuries?

In trades that I didn't see coming the DBacks trade two DSL pitchers to the Cubs for Tony Campana. Don't know anything about Castillo, but Leal was one of the better pitchers in the DSL last year. I know it's dangerous to read too much into DSL stats and all, but dominating the league at 17 is certainly a positive. In 70 innings, he had a 2.44 ERA, struck out 70 and walked 11. That Tribune article indicates he's coming stateside this year. Great move by Theo.

So NOW Epstein finally trades for lottery tickets, rather than Ivan Bladegroen, Dan Turpen, Chris Carter

I don't know much about Leal's stuff but from last years International roundup at BA Castillo is interesting to say the least. He turned 16 on August 27 2011 so he was one of if not the youngest player who signed in 2011, it said he was 88-90 touching higher with the FB projecting as a plus pitch. He also showed advance feel for a change up which is very encouraging for a 16 y/o. He pitched last year at 16. It seems like a coup by Theo even if this guys flame out at the higher levels its a worth-while gamble its not like they were gonna get a big league piece for Campana.

Yep. Digging deeper, they signed Castillo for $250K, so he has to be considered a prospect too. I have no clue what the heck the Diamondbacks are doing.

Obviously Castillo and Leal don't play with the sort of grit and hustle epitomized by Cody Ross and idolized by Kirk Gibson and Kevin Towers.

Great article just up on Fangraphs about the 20-80 scale www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-20-80-scale-sabr-style/ that most of us struggle with. (hope the link works, but you're all smart enough to get there without it) I'd be curious to get the opinions of the resident scouts to see how they feel about it.

Speier has a good blog on Alex Meyer, the prospect who got away. fullcount.weei.com. Meyer, now with the Twins, was offered 2 mil from the Sox after HS, but instead enrolled at Kentucky. He eventually signed with Washington for the sam e2 mil.

He eventually signed with Washington for the sam e2 mil. The Red Sox also had signed Carlos Martinez for $160,000 back in 2009, but MLB voided the deal over Martinez's paperwork, The Cardinals signed him for $1.5 million in 2010. Shame they were unable to get Martinez and Meyer, becuase if they had both in addition to Barnes, De La Rosa, Webster, and Owens...

I agree. If he had signed, he would probably be, imo, the second best prospect in the system. That of course assumes the Red Sox would have been able to develop him as well as the Cards.

Martinez signed as a SS with Red Sox he took to pitching after the deal was nixed so he probably would have been one other of their low-hitting SS collection.

With all the positive news coming out of Ft. Myers about Webster and RDLR, it is notable that Carl Crawford has been shut down for a week because of nerve inflamation.
This is in the same elbow on which he had TJ surgery in the offseason. Poor guy just can't get his career going.
