I've had the opportunity to watch the guy pitch in person a few times. Difficult to describe how good he is even playing for such a mediocre team. A few years ago we walked up to the park, and bought seats from a season-ticket holder who couldn't make the game. Those seats were about 17 rows up and maybe 20 feet off center right behind the plate. That was an education. He's an artist there's no other word for it. The way he set batters up and then sent them back to the dugout was ridiculous. If the game is making billions, he deserves a share of that. I'd pay to see him any time.

It may be the contract amount he deserved, I won't disagree with that. But it's a lot of money for a team with holes at nearly every position. They didn't really have a choice to give him whatever he demanded, as he's one of the few (if only) selling points the team has to its fans and other FA's at this point

Angel Villalona got his visa. At least he had to wait a while to get it. Thats some type of justice in D.R.

It's nice to see Seattle locking up its own with the Hernandez signing. I think it's good for baseball and I do hope the Tigers extend Verlander and there's no reason why Kershaw wouldn't remain with the Dodgers.
The next elite pitcher that everybody will be wanting is David Price as there's no chance he gets locked up by TB. My guess is Tampa deals him, and unless they deal him to NY or Texas or Anaheim, then he will be the next big pitching free agent. And right around the time, the Yanks will be able to spend their money, so that bears watching.
Meanwhile, if I'm the Sox, I hope Stanton becomes available via free agency. I still think a masher like him is a better investment. I think it's better to grow your own pitching, which the Sox have begun to do, which I like (and acquire as well given the Webster, De La Rosa, and Wright acquisitions).

The Indians sign Daisuke Matsusaka to a minor league deal. Daisuke can earn up to $4m if he makes the majors and presumably has an early opt-out.

Buster Olney @buster_ESPN Filed to ESPN news desk: Concern about Felix Hernandez's elbow might affect contract talks about the proposed extension.

Buster Olney @buster_ESPN Filed to ESPN news desk: Concern about Felix Hernandez's elbow might affect contract talks about the proposed extension. To that I say why? If Felix Hernandez is pitching like King Felix then blows out his elbow in the next 2 years; he's still incredibly young to recover and pitch great afterwards. Elbow concerns for a pitcher are nothing like a shoulder problem.

Here's the thing: the only way a deal that long can even come close to being justified is if you think he has a good chance of outproducing his AAV in the first few years (Fangraphs pegs him to have been "worth" $27.7m in 2012) to compensate for the fact that he almost certainly won't be worth close to $25m when he's in his mid-30s. If I knew that I had a good chance of losing an entire season of Hernandez's prime years due to TJ surgery, I would absolutely see if I can reduce the terms of the contract or include some injury protection (akin to what's in the Lackey contract).

You're right, you have to try to get protection

Bourne to Cleveland, 4/$48.
It may take longer than you'd like, but Scott Boras is going to get you your money.

It appears the Indians are serious about challenging the Tigers.

Fangraphs recently posted an interesting article where they try to discern the non-baseball related costs of signings like King Felix. For the Mariners, not signing Felix, almost regardless of cost, may be worse than signing him for too much $/years. It gets into things like the cost of always rebuilding and suffering poor attendance and lesser TV deals. However, if there's significant injury concern then it only makes sense to re-write the contract at least.

Remember that the Indians were rumored to have offered Victorino a four year deal in that range (4/44), Pagan got 4/40, B.J. Upton got 5/75, and fangraphs contract crowdsourcing, which ended up conservative on most free agents this year, had him at 5/70.

What a douchebag!!!! Imagine being so talented your whole life that no one ever called you out, so you actually think doing stuff like this is ok. Wow, even for all that talent, I would hate to have this clown in the Sox organization.

Here's what Adrian Gonzalez told USA Today: "Chemistry is something you need to have among the players but also with the owners, the coaches and the front office. It needs to be complete. In Boston we had great chemistry among the players – we loved each other, we were together – but that was only among the players. It wasn't there with the rest. That's why the team didn't win. It needs to be an organization-wide thing.'' www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2013/02/gonzalez_crawfo.html?comments=allMods can move this to another thread if in wrong place

Also, Bauer fancies himself as a rapper, only he's hilariously bad at it. If that's not charming, I don't know what is. And I stand by this today. In all seriousness, if Bauer was in a terrible rock band instead, nobody would care. It's the white rapper thing that everyone goes crazy over. Personally, I like that the guy has a chip on his shoulder. He's like Dustin Pedroia, only taller, and losing at rapping instead of losing at cribbage. EDIT: I can't overemphasize how much he's losing at rapping. It's really bad.
