The A's rep said that they wanted to change their pick. I'm glad that it was a slip of the tongue and that she did not actually announce the other name.

Goetze is also homeschooled, what impact, if any, would that have on his commitment to going to college? Is he committed to a university? Just speaking from personal experience, I have homeschooled family and they are very focused on school work. UNC just accepted a commitment from a Texas home-schooled basketball player for 2014 (Justin Jackson of Spring, Texas). There are many home schooled kids, but this is the only one I can recall who has been offered by big time schools. I am sure that home schooled athletes with elite talent have good advice about how to qualify for college and meet NCAA standards. Goetze is going to be really good he was looking at my college at one point he seems destined to go to college

My gosh, the A's changed their draft pick after announcing a kid? Is that what just happened? If so, it is brutal. They changed it before it was annoucned.. probably happens more than we know, it doesn't make any difference it was their turn. probably a scenario where the guy they wanted was already taken and they didn't know it?

Harold Reynolds should not represent the MLB in any capacity. He is hopeless. Go play golf, you surely cannot give opinions on scouting/player recommendations of any sort.

According to Gabe Speier's profile on BA he sounds pretty signable
The nephew of former big leaguer Chris Speier, Gabe was the most pleasant surprise at the Southern California Invitational in February, catching scouts' attention by retiring all four hitters he faced, three via strikeout. He is a dogged competitor with good feel for pitching and a quick arm, but at 6 feet, 175 pounds, he’s undersized and had a tendency to lose velocity as his outings wore on this spring. Scouts have seen him touch 93 mph early in games, and he'll pitch more at 88-91 early before settling in at 84-88. He commands his fastball well to both sides of the plate. His curveball flashes power when it's on, and he'll mix in a slower version as a get-me-over pitch. He sells his changeup well, and it projects as an average pitch with good arm speed and fade. Speier is committed to follow in his uncle's footsteps at UC Santa Barbara, but he’s considered signable in the top 10 rounds, and some scouts like him as high as the fifth.

What the Red Sox have to explain to these kids is the round doesn't matter what so ever. They get just as much if not more money by being taken in the teens, if they can get over that point guys like Speier are in play.

FWIW, Driskel was a heck of a high school baseball player. The UF baseball staff desperately wanted him to play both sports.

The Sox grabbed 19 guys from BA's top 500. Unless a fair number of guys from the top 500 actually go undrafted, then the average team should walk away from the draft with 16-17. Why is their draft haul so unexpected again?
edit: Not to say I'm not happy with their selections. I don't really know enough about most of the players to have much of an opinion.

To me I think when you draft guys like Ryan Boldt in the late 20's, it's just because you don't see much else and will take a shot. I like that Sawdeye didn't play it safe. This could be a bumper crop for the Red Sox system if they can get some of this talent in the right areas signed.

If I remember correctly, last year, they grabbed a bunch of college seniors who were generally unheralded in rounds 5-10 in order to go above-slot on Marrero/Buttrey, which is normally when they would otherwise draft those mid-tier HS prospects that constitute the back end of the 500. This year, despite somewhat replicating the below-slot strategy in rounds 6-10, they also grabbed a bunch of interesting names in the lower rounds, which made day 3 a pleasant surprise. EDIT: Matt provides some more detail:

I wonder if they'd make a run at Boldt that would take them over the pool but not enough to lose a pick. In other words, I wonder how much of tax he's worth? As long as you don't lose a pick and it doesn't affect your pool $$$ for next (or does it - I keep forgetting the rules) year why not chalk it up to "big revenue team leverage" if the guy is worth it?

Goetze is commited to unc asheville he has a full ride to them. He had tommy john surgery last season but prior to that he has a major recruit to every high major college. He is a legit 6'6 and his fastball was 92-94 but was 90-92 this season comming back from it I can't find information on him going to asheville anywhere. All I've found online is that he's going to Louisburg College, a JuCo. Do you have a link?

Why is their draft haul so unexpected again? If you consider that they drafted 8 of the top 139, despite not having any compensation picks, things look differently, and there will be plenty of opportunity for dreaming the impossible dream of signing some of the longest of long shots.

I picked the wrong draft day to have plans. Looks like it was a pretty exciting day with a lot of awesome picks. Realistically I wouldn't get my hopes up for many of them to sign. The Sox are just taking a lot of chances here and honestly don't expect to sign many of them. A few would be realistic best case scenerio, anything else is just wishful thinking.
