2013 MLB Draft Day 3 Discussion Thread
|
Post by jmei on Jun 8, 2013 16:56:32 GMT -5
They really have nothing to lose by snapping up the tough signs this late in the draft. You never know what dangling $100,000 and the allure of the Red Sox experience (tour of Fenway, meeting Pedro/Papi/Pedey/etc.) might do to a guy's college commitment. Plus, even if there's no chance that a player signs, you can formally start building a relationship with his adviser/family that might come in handy a few years down the road.

Been catching up here on the 3rd day. With respect to Yaz's grandson, I think it is best for all that he wasn't drafted by the Red Sox and wouldn't be surprised if it was requested/suggested by Yaz the elder that they not do so. Someone may come up with a quote from him to prove me wrong, but it seems like he would be better off without the extra pressure and baggage. Let the poor kid play and make his own way without the side show and story line. I know he is not really highly regarded as a prospect so this may be minimal, but if I were him I would get tired of that angle pretty quickly myself.

There is actually one thing that college offers that the Sox can't. If you get assigned to Lowell you can get it there but you have to pay for it.

The Red Sox should use last year's 11th round selection Jamal Martin as a cautionary tale.. they went up to the deadline with him offereing him 100k and maybe a little more. He turned it down to go to FSU. Long story short. He never made it to FSU, now he is at some JC/CC and had a disasterous year at the plate. He is draft eligible yet again and we have yet to hear his name.
Some of these kids will never get a shot at this kind of money again.. even if it's small relative to the top of the draft. Just the odds of it.

The Red Sox should use last year's 11th round selection Jamal Miles as a cautionary tale.. they went up to the deadline with him offereing him 100k and maybe a little more. Just the odds of it. A very good and valid point. Thank you for the share.

Pat Goetze is ranked as the 19th best prospect in NC by BA.

Goetze is also homeschooled, what impact, if any, would that have on his commitment to going to college? Is he committed to a university?
Just speaking from personal experience, I have homeschooled family and they are very focused on school work.

This is just a random thought, but I'm trying to understand the Red Sox draft philosophy of taking so many highly ranked players. As someone stated, maybe they'll try to sign as many as they can for ~$100,000, but maybe part of the strategy is to sign as many as you can and with the leftover money use a "we literally can't give you more than x amount" strategy, if that makes sense. Maybe some players will be inclined to sign sooner, and the players that drag out negotiations will literally have to accept x dollars (so that Boston doesn't exceed the 5%) if they want to play pro ball. Who knows, some guys may badly need the money and Boston can lock up 1-2 for less than expected. Just brainstorming here. Regardless, I love what Boston is doing as opposed to drafting a bunch of org guys. Love the draft so far (even the Ball pick which I initially criticized).

Goetze is commited to unc asheville he has a full ride to them. He had tommy john surgery last season but prior to that he has a major recruit to every high major college. He is a legit 6'6 and his fastball was 92-94 but was 90-92 this season comming back from it

My gosh, the A's changed their draft pick after announcing a kid? Is that what just happened? If so, it is brutal.

Trevor Morrison the BPA.. #139 on the top 500.. no chance he signs.

Trever Morrison, HS SS, is ranked 139th by BA. MLB.com: Morrison is an athletic, toolsy shortstop who scouts expect to become a good defender as he develops. He already has clean actions in the field and a solid arm. Morrison has plus speed and is expected to be able to remain at shortstop long-term. At the plate, Morrison has a quick, line-drive stroke and sprays the ball to all fields. As he physically matures (he's listed at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds), Morrison may develop some power, but his game is likely to be better suited for the top of the order. Morrison is committed to Oregon State. wapc.mlb.com/play/?topic_id=40395496&content_id=27714741

Just speaking from personal experience, I have homeschooled family and they are very focused on school work. UNC just accepted a commitment from a Texas home-schooled basketball player for 2014 (Justin Jackson of Spring, Texas). There are many home schooled kids, but this is the only one I can recall who has been offered by big time schools. I am sure that home schooled athletes with elite talent have good advice about how to qualify for college and meet NCAA standards.
