I know Iglesias and Drew are the natural shortstops, but if you ask me, this battle is between Iglesias and Middlebrooks. This. Couldn't agree more. Pretty much. I like Middlebrooks just fine, and I would love for him to be an above average starting third baseman. Nevertheless, Middlebrooks gets talked about like he is already an established all star. He was an interesting prospect (#51 on BA top 100 prior to 2012), and hit right away when he arrived in the majors. His performance then tapered off pretty steadily (its not he lit the world on fire in July or August 2012), got hurt. He then struggled mightily to start this year and got hurt again. I know he has power potential, but his plate discipline/hitting approach is absolutely terrible. I would like for him to work on fixing this approach in AAA.

Considering who is pitching for Tampa, I don't feel bad for anyone going 0-4. This guy has been nails.

Yeah I don't really understand why everyone wants to get rid of a perfectly good good shortstop (something the Sox haven't had in forever, by the way) in Drew, when it's the guy standing to his right who's been the worst full-time player on the team by far this year.

I do not think Iglesias has the same offensive ceiling as Middlebrooks, but that does not mean I want Middlebrooks playing third base, until he fixes the approach that led to a 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Everyone might want to go back and read the Jackie Bradley thread when he was "the next big thing". Amazing how fast everyone lost interest once it became clear that, like many young players, he needed to close a few holes and learn the league. While I've been very impressed with Iglesias' impressive bat speed, how quickly he's using that to his advantage in refining his approach, and the patience he's also been developing, arguing one player versus the other - black and white with nothing in between - is silly.
Middlebrooks has been hurt (something he seems to have a problem coming clean about), as have both Drew, and Iglesias. Pedroia is hurt right now as I write this, though he pushes on through it. Given that there's still nearly 100 games left, could it be there's enough playing time for all four of them if it's wisely allocated? While I know it's fun, the posts back and forth end up looking like so much navel gazing.
One more thing. We should acknowledge the Sox FO for having put the team in such an advantageous position. There were lots of calls for trading Iglesias over the winter... classic sell low stuff, real foolishness. This, having the Sox in first place and holding all these assets and potential assets, looks a lot better to me. It makes for a lot of tough decisions, but having too much talent is always better than not having enough.

Or it could be that this was not Farrell's call. Who knows, maybe they have come to the conclusion internally that Middlebrooks is a 6-4 version of Brandon Inge and are shopping him before other clubs believe the same thing. Or they could be seeing if he and or Drew can get it on track between now and July 31 or assess how they might move one of them. Or it could be a half dozen other things. I just don't like cooling off the hot hand. All decisions like this one (roster construction) are made by those who sit at the committee table which is headed by Larry. Farrell & Ben only have input not final say. To believe otherwise is to just not have an understanding of how the Boston Red Sox are run. Farrell was probably even told that Middlebrooks is the starting 3B when he returns and even stated so last week.

That and they should've left Middlebrooks down until he got himself straightened out. My thoughts on Iglesias is an ultimate ceiling of .250-270 ave at best, and he'll have a tough time having an OBP exceeding .330 (if he reaches that in 500 ABs in a single season). But again, athletes get in zones - they "see the ball better" for periods of time etc. We all know it's a transient thing. I just am a big believer in riding it until it recedes. That and watching Iggy play SS is baseball porn.

To be fair, we really don't know how decisions are made in the final analysis. We are all supposin' and we are all nearsighted. Norm & others above are right IMO when they highly value Drew. He has a pretty long and good record. Who among us thought that he would play the field as well as he has??? Middlebrooks is our primary third baseman unless and until he definitively plays himself back to AAA. It would be nice to see him take the same apparent step forward that Iglesias has. On this team the attitude that "I didn't walk my way to the Big Leagues" is passé. Papi is the model. Good strike zone judgment and attacking with menace when the opportunity presents. He is often in charge of the at bats where it is the opposite with Middlebrooks. Iggy could very well be the shortstop of the future but it is not now. He is versatile enough to play every infield position and give 3 positions a rest. We don't want to ride Pedey, the smallest, gamest guy, into the dust. The competition b/t Drew, Iggy & Middlebrooks for playing time will benefit all I suspect.

I wouldn't have interrupted Iglesias' streak on principle, but Middlebrooks is important to the team because of his power. The Sox have not done as well against LHPs as they have against RHPs. Napoli is not enough RH power, especially since he isn't hitting that much.
There is another thing about Middlebrooks. He is the poster boy of the Sox organization. He came out of high school and worked his way up through the organization, each year doing somewhat better at a higher level than he did the year before. That continued right into the majors for a while last year.
Everyone wants to see him succeed and he is going to be given every chance to do so within reason. But that within reason may be a little more limited with this team having the kind of season it is, rather than the season most of us expected.
With Drew having only a one-year deal, Iglesias knows the SS position can be his next year, assuming he maintains a decent performance at the plate. He doesn't have to hit .448, but .220 probably won't cut it, either. He will get his chances now to show that had sustain a solid major league performance.
The best scenario for the Sox is for Middlebrooks and Iglesias to do well and be the starters next year. So it makes sense to give Middlebrooks his shot.

I do not think anyone is writing Middlebrooks off, so saying that Iglesias has made him expendable. What I believe is that Middlebrooks needs to fix his approach at the plate, and that is best be done at the triple A, and not in the majors for a contending team. Middlebrooks needs to play everyday, and Iglesias has shown the ability to play everyday.

This is amazing
ADD: Just one AB, but great job by WMB to fight the count back to 2-2 and single after falling behind early.

Why do you play the infield in down 5-0 with 0 outs in the first? I understand you don't want to drop down any more but you have to take outs at this point

Man everyone on this team is just ridiculously hot. Cobb doesn't seem to have anything.

I have an idea that will solve all of the Red Sox' problems - just score 6+ runs in the 1st inning every game.

I love the fact that they got Lackey some runs. Prediction for Drew 0-4 2ks. P.s. You got to feel bad for the Sox they keep winning series and gain nothing on the MFY'S. I mean when we play them I don't see anything but the pitching but for some reason they keep winning also. We are 4-2 against them.
