The Pads took 2/3 from the Sox in 2011. Have to like the pitching match-ups tonight and tomorrow though eh?

I'm a big fan of Webster, hoping he can keep improving with every start.

I'm a big fan of Webster, hoping he can keep improving with every start. I'm on record as saying I'd rather have Aceves starting short term. That said, Webster has two very good opportunities to impress. At home against SD on the 4th, and at Safeco on the 9th. If he does well, he'll probably get the last start before the all-star break in Oakland too.

I would rather have Rubby starting than either of them, but I am ok with Webster getting an extended look.

Wow, nothing but 95 mph . Best heat I've seen him throw in 4 or 5 years.

Look at the replay of the play at the plate in the 1st innning. Hundley didn't even touch Pedroia with his glove. there goes a run...

He may have gotten the foot. I still can't tell. Even if it was a miss, it wasn't one of those grossly incompetent calls.

Seeing Ciriaco starting for the Padres makes me so happy to be a Red Sox fan.

You can't stop Jose Iglesias. You can only hope to contain him.

Yes. I realize he started for the Red Sox last year. I should say. Pedro Ciriaco makes me happy I am a Red Sox fan living in 2013.

Lackey's slider is filthy. That second strike to Denorfia clipped the outer edge of the strike zone but ended up in the dirt. Poor Denorfia had no shot at all.
adding: this new John Lackey is really a joy to watch pitch. Dude has good stuff, and he knows what he's about out there. I love watching efficient pitching performances like this.

Iggy didn't miss a fat pitch for an rbi.
If they put up a few more runs this might be a situation for a Bailey inning (maybe)?

You can't stop Jose Iglesias. You can only hope to contain him. And even that is hoping against hope. An interesting offensive concept I've never heard of before -- the very effective offense provided by the top of the Sox lineup is providing protection for the #9 hitter. Opponents certainly don't want to turn the lineup over, so they have to come to Iglesias, and he is making them pay ..... and pay ...... and pay.

Iglesias is hitting nearly 200 points higher than Pedro Ciriaco.

Veteran pitcher with 103 pitches through eight. Tazawa and Miller are warm. Uehara has gotten a lot of work recently, maybe too much. The Red Sox have a three-run lead. I know it's a save situation, but this is really a situation to not let the statistic dictate bullpen usage.
EDIT: I should point out that I really like Uehara, and I think if a team is going to have a traditional three-out closer, he's a great choice.

Hats off to you Lackey, didn't think you had it in ya but you're turning out to be possibly the most pleasant surprise of the season (in one with a lot of those, no less).

This is not "a new John Lackey". This is who the Sox paid for and expected to show up. The TJ surgery intervened, but before that episode, this is who he was: so efficient he'd put you in a trance. When you came out of it, you'd find out the Angels had won another game.

Hats off to you Lackey, didn't think you had it in ya but you're turning out to be possibly the most pleasant surprise of the season (in one with a lot of those, no less). If we had this version of Lackey in 2011, and not the 6+ ERA version, we might have won it all that year. He's becoming our ace in front of our eyes. Need Clay to get healthy and re-take it. No pressure on Lester now to perform. He needs to get it together. Dempster is fine as a 4th starter.

That MLB-minimum option on Lackey that Sox have for an additional year becomes more and more valuable with every start. He is pitching like a #1. And when he was healthy he was usually a better 2nd half pitcher, too. So there's that.
