It never hurts to ask, but using historical outliers as justification for your position is a terrible way to gain credibility. Every deal is not Bagwell-for-Andersen, Smoltz-for-Alexander or Pedro-for-Armas/Pavano. We are trying to have serious discussion on trade deadline matters. So, trading Holt and Koji (separately) for top 40-60 prospects is realistic. Trading two 40-60 prospect equivalents for a top 10 prospect is not realistic. A top 10 prospect is highly prized and not easily traded. If you want "realistic" discussion, how about acknowledging that the Sox including a high-upside minor leaguer like Margot or maybe even Guerra (with Desmond likely leaving) makes that sort of deal more likely? You dismiss the idea out of hand while calling "historical outliers" "unrealistic," despite the fact that, historical as they are, they happened and thus, are by nature, realistic. Do I have to be so careful with my wording as to make sure I say "who would you be willing to trade along with Holt and Uehara to get Giolito?" As far as I'm concerned, the purpose of discussion is to discuss, not force the commentary into the mold of your opinion. I'm done with this topic. It's not comparable because Pedro only had a year left on his contract. Unless you're saying Pedro is the dime and Pavano the quarter....? At any rate, he's just saying, just because someone made a lopsided trade before, doesn't mean we should expect trades to be lopsided in our favor in general. It's a sure way to set yourself up for disappointment. For the sake of discussion, we're just trying to figure out what we can probably get for Holt. Of course, we'd love to get Bryce Harper, but there that discussion isn't really going anywhere.

I agree that analytics can't explain everything. However, I think "heart" explains even less -- not because I think what it's trying to describe isn't there, but because it's hopelessly vague. It's so vague you can't even really argue with it other than to ask for something more specific. For example, is the manager not motivating his players? Do the players hate each other? Is AJ Peirzynski on your team? Without something more specific, it's really hard to talk about it.
I disagree that the Yankees are doing well because of a "winning attitude." How many years of terrible A-Rod have they had to put up with until this season? Terrible Teixiera? Mediocre Sabathia? AJ Burnett never really worked out. The Yankees have a payroll large enough to absorb multiple bad contracts. The Yankees also made some good trades: Montero for Pineda was a knockout, signing Tanaka instead of Dice-K (I know it's not exactly like that -- of course they weren't available at the same time).
Also, I disagree the Pats win because they have a "winning attitude." I think Bill Belichick just outsmarts everyone, and it's partly also because he's totally unsentimental about the team. I think the Pats lost some Super Bowls due to bad luck (vs. Giants) and won some due to good luck (tuck rule, last year). I would say the "Patriots Way" is less about a "winning attitude" than Belichick's total businesslike approach to the sport.

Shouldn't we be celebrating this loss? 2nd round pick, here we come! (I'm not optimistic about us doing worse than the Phillies)

If Ben does this i'll stop defending him.... What a dumb move to make for a team that should be selling. Hamels isn't a rental. He'd help us the next few years if he pitches well. I'm worried about his performance in Fenway and the AL East so I'd pass. But, trading for a pitcher with term left on his contract isn't bad. If you believe the pitcher will succeed for you. Yeah, but you pay a premium when you buy now versus the offseason. I understand he may not be available then, but there are plenty of good free agent pitchers hitting market this offseason, so I don't see why it's so imperative we get this specific pitcher, and now. You'd also be getting more of Hamel's decline years versus a free agent.

I know that wasn't 100% his fault, but this still kind of seems like the old Joe Kelly. He's throwing way too many balls (17S 15B now)

If the season ended right now, BOS would have the 4th pick in the 2016 MLB draft: 1. PHI ---- 2. MIA -7.0 3. COL -9.0 4. BOS -10.0 (6-game losing streak)5. MIL -10.0 (4-game winning streak) 6. CIN -10.5 7. OAK -10.5 8. SEA -11.0 9. CHW -11.5 10. ARZ -12.0 11. SDO -12.0 11. TEX -12.5 12. ATL -13.0 13. CLE -13.0 (tiebreaker order of the above teams is ARZ, COL, TEX, BOS, CHW, PHI, CIN, MIA, SDO, ATL, MIL, CLE, SEA, OAK)3 games separate #4 from #14. More optimistically, 3 games separate #4 from #2

I think tawaza has value. We could get a decent prospect for him. I don't trade Tazawa unless I got a blowout offer, or if I don't think we can contend next year. Him and Koji are the only good relievers on the Red Sox with positive WAR. I'd trade Koji for a good enough offer because with the shed salary for next year we could probably buy up some decent relievers, and he'll be 41 next year. Edit: those are FanGraph's numbers, BR tells a different story. At any rate, according to BR, Tazawa has been worth 1.1 WAR, Koji 0.5, Layne 0.5, Ross 0.3 and Breslow 0.2.

If The Sox get swept they will likely be sellers. The Sox needed an ace before buchholz got hurt. Noway do we trade for another ace, and are a playoff team. We might trade for an ace to contend next year. I would never trade a future all-star catcher for nothing less than an ace pitcher. Which is harder to find an all-star starting pitcher or catcher? Well, we didn't get swept, but I think they should still be sellers. There's a chance at the postseason still but this is a really iffy team. It's thin depth-wise (the starting pitching can't withstand an injury, relief is very thin, 1B, 3B not even playing at replacement level) and I don't really have any hopes for a good postseason run anymore. There aren't really that many chips to sell anyway (possibly Koji -- I like this idea because I'm a little worried about his age next season but it seems like he's been solid this season, and Victorino seems to be hitting fairly well lately), but what I'd really want to see is players we don't expect to see next year (Napoli, Victorino) benched in favor of players we do expect to play (Castillo, when he gets healthy, maybe even JBJ). It would also mean we could keep Porcello in the rotation, and either try Kelly in the rotation again or in the bullpen, and see if they can fix whatever went wrong, without any pressure. In terms of return, probably looking mostly for prospects that could have a shot at the bullpen for next year, at least. Maybe they can bring Craig up and see if he can re-establish any value but he's hitting .260 in AAA so it doesn't seem likely. If they can get anyone to pay enough of his salary I'd take that deal. And, maybe in the offseason, a review of John Farrell?
