I understand the frustration behind his usage of the bullpen, but why even reference the Margot for Kimbrel trade? Even if we still had Margot it's not like there's a spot in the OF for him to take. I'd still rather have Kimbrel.

I think i remember these Tigers getting 8 runs on Wright last season, You're correct. July 26th, gave up 8 ER in 4.2 IP.

This reminded me of Laremy Tunsil. His prospect status for last year's NFL draft plummeted after a video came out of him smoking weed out of a gas mask, and he potentially lost millions over it. Obviously this is a totally different situation, but how could a young athlete be dumb enough to allow themself to be videotaped while doing something that is illegal?

Shaw is off to a nice start for the brewers. I could see him being just like last year, starting off hot and then tanking the rest of the season. Or, maybe he is fully prepared for a 162 game season of baseball and has a consistently good year, with bat and glove. I wish him well. Just to clarify, I meant it's possible that he has a similar season to last year. I'm not wishing for him to be bad. I'd love to see him succeed in Milwuake, just as I hope Thornburg eventually performs in Boston.

Sale looks good. Anyone else think that pitching for a legitimate contender might bring out the best in him?

Clearly Xander wasn't kidding when he said he was going to steal more bases this year.

From the Drellich piece: " A lot of guys who hit the long ball but don't do that [NB: drive in runners from 3rd with 1 out] struggled to find jobs this winter time . . . Everybody tries to simplify: ‘Well, this is the thing.' There's a lot that's involved in all those types of conversations. And you might have one of those type guys hitting sixth or seventh on your team. But generally if they're hitting third or fourth you probably don't have a real good team." Assuming he's quoted correctly, Dombrowski claimed that the reason (Trumbo? Carter? Morales? Bautista? Moss? Napoli? Encarnacion?) struggled to find jobs (i.e. received smaller than expected contracts) is because of their "failure" in "RBI" spots? That's truly unbelievable - I mean that's Dave Stewart territory I don't know if I'd interpret it that way. To me it seems like he's talking about sluggers with not much to offer other than power. When he says if they're batting third or fourth you probably don't have a good team, I feel like he means that someone more rounded should be in that spot.

Love this quote: ...wait, is that a scream I here from Deep John's corner of the room? Oh man, I really hope someone else laughed at that as much as I did.

I've read through most of the thread, but could someone please explain Amendola's situation right now? I was under the belief that the Pats would need to restructure his contract in order to keep him for this year.
Is that still what they need to do? If so, how likely is that to happen after all the moves they've already made during this offseason?
Edit: I don't care about the specifics of his contract, and/or what his salary would need to be. I'm just curious as to where he lies in the team's plans.

I've never been more of a Porcello fan than I am right now. Him striking out Tebow, than to say he was "more of a NFL guy" when talking about Tebow. Acknowledging that he wasn't a real NFL QB. Then he thought he was the ball boy. You're the best Rick Porcello. The first memory I have of Porcello is when he took on Youkilis at Fenway. God I love him so much. His attitude always reminds me of Bumgarner. They're afraid of nothing, and they're not afraid to show it.

Team USA tore Ryan Dempster to pieces. He went 1/3 of an inning, giving up two hits, two ER, 3BB, and left with the bases loaded.
I thought it was cool to see him on Canada's roster, but honestly, did anyone think he could contribute any (on the field) value? Dempster looked like exactly what he is, a 39 year old who hasn't pitched in over 3 years.

Well, it seems more likely that Butler stays now. This has to mean the Pats are confident in receiving a strong offer for Garropolo, right?

I don't understand NFL Free Agency, the trade market, salary caps, etc. But I try to keep up with it, and reading the insight on this forum has definitely helped out.
So I just want to say thanks to everyone posting about the Pats, and please continue to do so as I'll never understand football like I do baseball.

I understand how Catcher is an area of concern for the Sox, but I don't think the situation is nearly as dire as some people have made it out to be.
If if his offense remains well below average, Vazquez can still be a solid backup catcher with his excellent defense. I may be in the minority but I still have a ton of faith in Swihart. He was rushed to the majors, and played well the last few months of his first season, then got hurt last year playing a position he never should have been in.
Obviously I'm not expecting Swihart to turn into Buster Posey but to me he's still clearly the best option at Catcher.

Groome at 29 is a bit of a surprise but he was ranked 1st by most in the last draft so I could see the consistency with top overall talents. Plus, that curveball is pretty sick and fastball not bad iether. I really hope he gets develops a change-up. He'll need to start using a third pitch this year, especially since his inning total will be capped at around 80(?). Yup, I guess the coaches agree hahaha....j/k. We all knew he needs to work on it so seems like he's really focused but he also needs to stay of the social media and the "haters" chip on his shoulder. Not exactly sure how he comes off saying some of the things he's saying. Sure he's a great prospect but don't forget you were given a gift and you have to keep developing it by working your a$$ off. Only then you might be great and a HOF'er. From the Herald article:Right now, Groome is trying to harness his changeup. He’s going to whip it into shape. That’s a given, just as he’s done with his other two (or three) pitches. “I’m really just focusing on throwing (the changeup) like my curveball and fastball — same arm speed, same everything and hopefully it will click,” Groome said. “I’ve pretty much mastered my fastball, mastered my curveball. Now the changeup’s a work in progress.” linkAlso says he's messing around with a knuckleball on the side. I love how he displays such a large amount of confidence in himself, while also being able to admit that not everything he does is great and there's still work to be done.

Thanks. I'm hoping to make the drive Thursday and see team usa as well. I'm presuming the Team USA game will be treated like a regular spring training game, for which you'll need a ticket. Only the minor league stuff on the backfields is free. For anyone who is also a Spring Training Rookie, I would direct you to this great piece Will Woodward did last year when he was one as well: news.soxprospects.com/2016/04/spring-training-rookie-my-first-trip-to.htmlThank you Chris. I plan on getting a ticket, as I saw they still have good seats available for the game.

Do you need a ticket for that days game to watch them practice or can anyone show up? Just show up...no cost. You can walk from one game to the other. Thanks. I'm hoping to make the drive Thursday and see team usa as well.

Should have posted this earlier, but Shelby Miller had a great outing yesterday. 3 IP, 1 hit, no runs, no walks, 6 K's. I know its spring training, but there were encouraging signs for him. His command/control good(albeit not spectacular), he was able to keep his FB velocity around the mid 90's, and he moved at a fairly quick pace. Maybe it's just because I have an affinity for Arizona teams, but I think Miller is poised for a very good comeback year. According to one tweet I read, he hit 97 several times yesterday. If he did, I think it looks even better for his outcome. IMO velocity is one of the best things to look for in ST, and for him to consistently be in the mid 90's in early March is a good sign. His career high for FBv is 94.0 with the Braves in 2015. I wouldn't expect his career velocity to improve very much, if at all, but his early velocity this spring combined with good command of the plate are all promising signs for him. Hopefully he'll finally provide some value for Arizona.

To me it's the best all around outfield in baseball. Off the top of my head only the Pirates come close and even disregarding player contracts and control which favor the Sox considerably, I'd take Mookie over Cutch, JBJ over Marte and Benintendi over Polonco (although that one is close). For me, the only question, which I consider a relatively minor question, is how much consistency JBJ's offense evolves into. ADD: As far as being better than Rice, Lynn, Evans I'd say probably if you view it as a picture in time. I'd want to see them play together for about 3 years before I'd say that though, there's something to be said for longevity. Yeah it's definitely a good argument over who has the best OF. The Pirates are clearly great in the OF, despite concerns about Cutch, and I'd also say the Marlins, Dodgers, and maybe the Cubs could be put in that discussion.

I agree with what someone said recently, it's not like Price is out of the woods yet. Obviously it's an optimistic sign that they didn't immediately recommend TJS, but until the fluid in his elbow goes down it'll be hard to get a proper reading on his MRI.
He may still need it, he may not need it, or he may just miss a month or two. There's plenty of outcomes here. I see no reason to worry about this until we hear just how bad his soreness/injury is.
