Kole Cottam, C, Red Sox — Boston's fourth-round pick out of Kentucky in 2018 looked like he was having a career year following the lost 2020 season. Between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland, the 24-year-old slashed .278/.371/.500 and slammed a career-best 10 homers (he entered the year with just 11 to his name). His season didn't begin until July 29, however, so he's using the Arizona Fall League to make up for lost time. He's played three seasons in the minors, but on Tuesday he achieved a pair of career-bests when he collected his first four-hit game and first multi-homer game in Scottsdale's walk-off win over Salt River. Even better? Cottam's last hit—a 10th-inning single—brought home the game-winning run. Baseball America comment on Cottam

"Eovaldi has thrown over 150 innings 3 times since 2012 and he's now well in his 30's."
Eovaldi is 31.

AFL has a 17-second pitch clock from the time that the pitcher receives the ball back from the catcher or umpire.

I caught the AFL game last night in Scottsdale. Only Kole Cottam played (DH). He was leaner and a much better runner than I expected. Kole ran very hard after he made contact. Very quiet, upright stance. Compact swing with good bat speed.
Scottsdale Scorpions lost 8-1. I had to leave in the 7th innning. Not sure if Kole had a hit or if a Boston pitcher got into the game (I was helping to watch my energetic 7-year-old grandson).

Phil Plantier? Plantier was almost sitting down when wating for each pitch. What reminds you of Plantier when you see Casas?

Pete Abraham article in September 11 Globe:
"Pitching and lack of power are the biggest issues [for the Arizona Diamondbacks]. Losing top prospects Corbin Carroll and Jordan Lawler to shoulder injuries was a blow, too. Lawler was injured two games into his professional career after being the sixth overall pick. The shortstop is a foundational talent, but the immediate setback was typical of what Arizona has endured this season."
The Sox should feel doubly fortunate to have chosen Mayer. Lawler may well have been a close second on their draft board.

The Red Sox have explained in past seasons that promotions druring the last week or 10 days of the season were done with the goal of getting those prospects familiar with the ballpark and city in which they are highly likely to play at the start of the next season rather than with the plan of challenging them at the higher level.

That was a 26-second trot around the bases by Yorke. He will need to speed that up a little or some pitcher is going to take offense.

Terrific article by Alex Speier about the Red Sox' 2021 draft focusing on players drafted after the second round. I was facinated by the note about B.J. Vela: "....junior college infielder B.J. Vela (.481/.560/.821, 7 homers, 4 strikeouts in 134 plate appearances) in the 16th. Alex's article on 2021 draft class

I saw Pedroia play shortstop at ASU 6-7 times. I did not see anything that would suggest that he would be a good option at SS in the majors. I am sure tht the Sun Devil coaches, who consistently raved about his intangibles, were not shocked that Pedroia put in the hours to turn himself into an outstanding defensive second baseman, but I doubt anyone else expected that kind of improvement after the postion swich in professional baseball.
Let's see what Yorke's defense looks like when he is 21--the age at which Pedroia was still in the minors.

Trades (and declining an opportutnity to make a trade) cannot be accurately assessed until 2-3 years after the fact. Trading is a science, an art and luck. Anderson Espinoza says hi.

I did not say anything about anyone "loving" Yorke's defense. I stand by my comment that most of the questions were about his arm. Most does not equal all.

Most of the questions about Yorke's defense arose from his shoulder issues that were reported to be much improved just before the draft in 2020.

What was the cost of adding starting pitchers?
We do not know. Is it reasonable to question a decision if you do not know what return was demanded by the team offering a starter?
You can fairly express disappointment that a trade could not be negotiated, but the reasonableness of Boston's decision to reject all trade proposals cannot be attacked logially unless you have much more detailed information about Bloom's options.

From MassLive.com today:
Red Sox 2020 draft pick Blaze Jordan is batting .348 with a .397 on-base percentage, .621 slugging percentage, 1.018 OPS, three homers, seven doubles, one triple, 18 RBIs, 11 runs, six walks and 13 strikeouts in the Florida Complex League.

Blaze Jordan was about a year young for his class. He will not turn 19 until December 19. Many thought that he would be a high 2021 first round pick if he had delayed entry into the first year player draft until this year. The decision of the Sox to create the financial flexibility to draft Jordan in the 3rd round by drafting Yorke in the 1st round at a discount to slot is looking very shrewd.

Look at 2022 draft class by ProspectsLive: "2022 MLB Draft. Off the cuff, the 2022 class looks much, much healthier in terms of college bats. It’s also loaded with high octane prep arms. As it stands today, it might be a lighter year on the college pitching side, but there’s a ton of time between now and next July for guys to really pop and take enormous leaps forward." On the surface, no reason to think that the quality of the choices when the Sox draft at 41 will be less than it was this year. Prospects Live preview of 2022 draft
