The box score from yesterday’s Dominican Summer League Mariners vs. DSL Yankees2 game reads more like a survival test than a baseball game.
Runs: 43.
The final score was 22-21.
Tied at 16-16 after nine innings, the DSL Mariners scored six runs in the top of the 10th inning on only one hit (a single). The speed-up rules put a runner at second to start the inning. Two errors, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a fielder’s choice did the rest.
But they only barely held on from there. In the bottom of the 10th, three walks, two singles and an error allowed the DSL Yankees2 to rally back, but with the tying run at second, a fielder’s choice finished one of the wildest games we will see in 2021.
Errors: 14.
Four different players had two errors.
Hits: 28.
Mariners catcher German Guilarte had four hits. He also walked three times and was hit by a pitch. He reached base eight times overall.
Walks: 31.
Three different DSL Yankees2 hitters had four walks in the game. Overall 15 of the 23 batters to come to the plate in this game drew at least one walk.
Wild Pitches: 8.
Six of the 13 pitchers allowed at least one wild pitch.
Passed Balls: 1.
Considering the wildness of the pitchers, Guilarte and Yankees catchers Jesus Rodriguez and Edinson Duran deserve plenty of credit.
Balks: 2.
Hit By Pitches: 6.
Stolen Bases: 15.
Innings: 10.

Adding my post on the draft signing thread here also:
After watching and reading interviews of Mayer and reading reports about his personality and character, I am betting that he easily and eagerly accepted slot to allow the team to have more flexibility about signing his future teammates. That seems to be the kind of unselfish leader that he is.

The Dodgers drafting all pitchers in its firt 15 picks and with 18 of its 20 was certainly interesting...the Angles signing 7 catchers as undrafted free agents was equally unusual, though less impactful.

Fly into the Roanoke airport once and you will never book a flight that lands there again unless you are into thrills. Upbelievably steep approach. I thought I was on a Magic Mountain coaster ride.

For fun, I checked out Xander's scouting report here and compared it to Marcelo's. Am not sure the last time it was updated, but they are extremely similar with Xander having slightly more potential power and Marcelo having much higher defensive potential. Both have off the charts makeup and work ethic. The only thing that makes me sad is that one day Marcello will be at SS instead of Xander. Xander was the first prospect I followed from such a young age thanks to this site. The comparison to Xander is exactly the point I was going to make before seeing your post. What is with the hand-wringing about Mayer's upside??? The Red Sox are wildly, insanely lucky to have him fall to No. 4. The Red Sox draft room was stunned. I was stunned and so were, I am sure, most of the posters here. Celebrate this.

There is value in having an emergency catcher who can handle the position with confidence if the situation arises.

There is such a dramatic range of opinions about how much the Sox will have to pay Niko Kavadas, I thought I would start a tread collleccting best guesses on the signing bonus for Nick the Greek.
My guess--he will sign for nominally above slot. $125,000 slot plus $15,000. I do not think he wants to go back for the first year of a master's program, take the chance of getting no more money and play for a bottom dwelling team.

KC used their presumed savings from taking an underslot HS pitcher at pick #7 to take... another underslot HS pitcher at 41? Very glad I'm not a Royals fan right now. Has there ever been a team who didn't spent their entire draft allotment ($)? Yes, countless times.

It is too much to hope for that Joshua Baez would be available when the Sox come up in the 3rd round, but that will not stop me from going to the wishing well.

For many teams feeling to financial pain of last season and dramatically lower attendance this season, there may be far less money available to sign draft picks than the allocated slot values. I suspect that the Pirates are really suffering financially and did not intend to spend anything like full slot. I know little about the financial circumstnaces of Texas and Detroit. Full slot may well be enough to sign Mayer, but the Red Sox also have the 5% over the total pool amount to play with. When interviewed during the draft, Mayer seemed eager to start playing in the Sox organization. He should feel fortunate to have been drafted by a big market team with deep pockets and an organization that is improving rapidly. He may not be excited about the likely 5 highest drafting teams in the upcoming first year player drafts.

The question is whether Bloom thinks Meyer is better than Lawler.

I can't believe that anyone would be disappointed having a choice between Lawler and Meyer

I cannot find the Future's Game box. I missed the last three innings. I see that Downs had a double that scored 2 runs and that Bello pitched. Any review of Bello's performance?

Al Leiter is listed as 6-2 by Baseball Reference. I have seen two videos of Al and Jack Leiter talking and walking. Al appears to be 2+ inches taller. We do not know what kind of shoes each was wearing, but it does raise a question about Jack's height.

I am going to offer my guess now. Davis will be available at 4 and the Red Sox will pick him.

Dustin Pedroia is 5-9 wearing cowboy boots with 3-inch heels. He lives in the Phoenix area where I live. I have seen him several times. I would guess 5-6 1/2. That height did not prevent him from becoming a dominant player. If Watson has Pedroia's hand-eye coordination, Watson should be a star. I have not ready any assessments that suggest that he has stellar contact skills. The Watson video I have watched included quite a bit of swings and misses.

"4. Boston Red Sox: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt KG: Word is Leiter is trying to price himself down to Boston and wants to land there. Word is that Boston would love that as well. Thus, a match made in heaven. EL: Yup."
Seems unlikely, but some players have done this before

greatscottcooper posted:
"I have faith the scouting department will make that choice. I read these lists from Keith law, ESPN, BA, Pipeline etc and I don't think that's a consensus order of talent as much as it's a list of who they think a team will take there based on a whole list of estimations. Whoever the Sox take at #4, for all I know 5 other players would have been taken between the other 28 teams. I'm a huge homer, I'm going to have long conversations in my head about how Leiter/Rocker/Jobe/Davis/Lawlar/Mayer/House is going to be the next great pitcher/hitter in Boston."
I second that motion.

The Red Sox will have the pick of the remaining 2 on this list (and all other players on their board). It may turn out to have been worth the suffering while watching the Sox play in the Covid-shortened 2020 season. Leiter Mayer Davis Rocker Lawler I really think house might sneak into this discussion before all is done. Or could. Maybe not will. Money will become a factor for some players. And house has been solid for quite awhile and has shown when he struggled he can recover and even improve I fully agree with you about House. I would prefer him to the pitchers.
