Do we know with certainty what Beni's worth is? Was it from the date of the trade? Does it include his season's performance to date?

What are the cap ramifications of Edelman being released due to a failed physical?

So the top three picks are QB. Maybe Atlanta a 4 as well. There go Lawrence, Wilson, Fields, Lance. Is there another team that'll look to take a QB before NE at 15? Denver? And if the top 5 QBs are gone, might we see NE slip down a few spots and still get a defensive stud?

My crystal ball is a bit foggy, but I see us starting with an eight-game win streak. Go SOX... let's get this started!

Since the price of admission into the top eight or so is now so high, what's NE's best bet? If Jones slips past the likely buyers, then there's a decent chance he falls to NE. NE may still want to trade up a couple spots to block Tampa Bay. While I'd love to get excited about drafting our "QB of the future" - maybe it's Stidham all along. COVID didn't give either Newton or Stidham the optimal ramp-up time last year. I'm somewhat optimistic that this new year and new weapons will bring out the best in both of them. And there's always the likelihood NE drafts a QB in rounds 2, 3 or 4. My sense is that Bill goes heavy on defense. Corner, Linebacker, Safety, D-Line.

Also, linebackers Cassius Marsh and Michael Pinckney.

A wild hypothetical to toss out there. What would it take to move up to take Lawrence, Wilson, or Lance? Especially those first two guys? NE is pretty much set with their roster for the most part, aside from what we'd say is the "quarterback of the future." Given that the salary cap will be expanding a good bit... and any rookie's contract will be a bargain related to the salary cap, might it make sense to trade a couple of players to garner draft picks to combine with ours... or maybe just trade our current players and picks... to acquire that future stud? The salary cap grows in coming years and NE can add parts as it does grow in the future. In other words, if - going forward - gathering talent QB is paramount vs cap issues, would it make sense to get the cream of the QB crop to build around?

Sorry if this has been asked recently... but... regarding players NE has signed, which ones factor into the compensatory picks process? I'm assuming if a player was cut, then signed by NE, then there would be no strings attached regarding the comp pick formula. And, if a player left as a free agent (Thuney) then a team signing him... would factor into the comp pick formula. Is there a chart showing each player NE signed and how that might factor into comp picks? Also, what about 2020 NE players who've signed elsewhere?

Maybe this has already been asked... so... Is there still any sort of 'hold' on trading players recently drafted? Does a team have to wait a certain period of time before trading someone they'd selected? Could that be why names weren't yet divulged?

If the Sox need a veteran lefty... I'm almost 60... used to throw mid-80s, but now only throw rice at weddings. No agent to deal with. Call me. Just don't ask me to pitch in night games - they're past my bedtime. Thanks!

I like the trade and hope to see more deals before the deadline. Getting a 'change of scenery' guy we decent stuff plus another arm for a couple of pretty replaceable bullpen arms. Any rumors on Bradley, Bennie or others?

Years ago Ralph Kiner asked the Pirates for more money than they'd offered him for the coming season. Pittsburgh's response: We finished in last place with you. We can do so without you.
What's done is done. Payroll issues, trades, etc. No sense debating past decisions that have led us to today's situation. In my view, we need to be sellers, open to any and all trades. Take a page from Belichick and trade players a year before they decline. Boston's lineup has shown it won't win anything as presently constructed. Injured pitchers are far from a sure thing... and even if they do come back... it may be a year or so.
We shot our load and have multiple titles to show for it. Let's blow it up and get young studs under team control... and augment with perhaps a free agent here or there.

Go ahead and be done with the season. And the year after that... I no longer care unless the Red Sox are in the playoffs. Just give me a local minor league team and I'm totally happy. My adult sons don't care for baseball. MLB has largely lost a generation. High spenders and TV revenue will support the coffers, yet the major league game has - for many fans - become not only unaffordable but undesirable. And that's such a shame. I couldn't care less whether I attend another MLB game.

While I'd have hoped NE could have kept Jimmy a couple years ago, that didn't happen. Same for hoping Gronk would stick around. Time passes... and I'd hope TB has another couple years left. I see a good bit of offseason roster churn - as is most always the case. Wish list: that other teams' fans could have even a sliver of the joy I've experienced these past 20 years. Whether TB stays or goes, there's good in either option for NE. He stays, we pick up some weapons... who knows? He leaves, cap flexibility, Stidham (or a FA signing) takes over with a pretty good team surrounding him. NE will be in the playoff hunt, just not as the top dog everyone gears up for as in years past.

12-4 at the outset would have constituted a solid season, especially with Gronk's retirement. Today was a big disappointment. Still, NE is in the playoffs.

I have to think Boston and Betts have had some level of discussion relative to what Betts feels he's worth and what Boston feels it can do under its current financial situation/constraints. If getting under the cap is Boston's goal, Betts pretty much has to go. Adding to that... even if Boston dumps Price/Sale or others to get under the threshold, there's no guarantee Betts signs. So, deal Betts for what you can get sooner vs later. Tell him we'd love to get a chance to sign you as a free agent, but we have to move forward with things to start 2020. Since you haven't given us a number you'll re-sign at... or even whether you'll sign at all, we have to trade you to get a level of certainty in 2020.
That'll put Boston under the penalty threshold, which opens up a myriad of options, including signing Betts a free agent, although I think the water has already been muddied by his not re-signing already. He's gone.

Trade Betts. In part because he's playing a cat-and-mouse game as to signing thus far. That tells me he wants a combo of maximum dollars or, perhaps, a better organization and fit.
It frees up a bunch of money. One player does not make a team. It gets Boston under the threshold, which helps in the future. The assets Boston gets - along with the salary relief - has value. Would I have preferred Betts over Sale, Eovaldi? Sure. But Betts wouldn't pull the trigger. So a team has to move on with what it's landscape presently looks like. Hate to lose him. Maybe Boston could figure out a way to re-sign him if he does become a free agent, but I doubt it.
