Giancarlo Stanton sometimes looks like one of the most fearsome hitters in baseball, but also one of the worst.

There in lies the rub, I'd be much more comfortable with him as my 5, no knock on him, than my 4, it means the rotation is that much better. We'll lilkely need 2 SP added/kept during the offseason. Yep, Crawford as the 5 probably means they signed two SPs better than him which makes for a nice hopefully deep rotation with Houck pivetta and Whitlock as injury options. Crawford as the 4 probably means they only signed 1 starter and your 5th starter is now one of the Houck pivetta Whitlock trio which certainly could work out just fine maybe even well but has a pretty low floor in my opinion. Plus, with Chris Sale in a rotation, more than the usual amount of depth starting pitching is absolutely necessary.

Jeez, if the Sox could have had Urias and a healthy Reyes for the entire season, I feel like that’s like five or six actual wins. Not statistical wins. Like real life change the standings.

I get that the Yankees suck, but I’m completely fine with Crawford as my 4/5 starter for the 2024 season.

Call me greedy. I’d like another crooked number right here on Cole.

I can’t watch the game tonight as I’m out of town and busy doing stuff. Turns out I’m out of town in Washington DC! Got pretty good seats for tomorrow nights game. It’s a new baseball park for me. Pretty jazzed.

One of my interests besides baseball is history and specifically military history.
I very much enjoy and regularly listen to The Jocko Podcast. Jocko Willinck is a retired Navy SEAL officer with his own fascinating personal history and distinguished combat record. He was was well-known SEAL sniper Chris Kyle’s commanding officer. He has authored several books himself, he runs multiple businesses and is a black belt in Brazilian ju jitsu.
His podcast delves into military history from ancient to modern and frequently ties in practical leadership lessons from that. He is an outstanding interviewer and a deep thinker. It isn’t a “history” podcast, but he regularly interviews those who have written military memoirs. If you are interested in the topic of leadership, this is a “must listen “.

This game and this thread should be a nice diversion from the trade deadline and the thread about the deadline. I just caught up on that thread. It was interesting and exhausting.
Separately, I love you Jarren Duran.

1. The entire salary structure is broken. Before they reach FA, tons of players are underpaid. Then after FA too many guys are a drain on their clubs because their contracts are awful relative to their production. I’m not smart enough to know the solution but it’s completely broken. Relatedly, I’d like some kind of incentive for a team to keep a player on the roster if he was on your roster the previous season. I mean some kind of benefit to the team like only a certain percentage of the salary of such a player counts against the cap. Casual fans are bolstered by year to year roster consistency. My wife can only name like eight players on the roster. Pretty sure she can’t name a single reliever and she watches parts of lots of games.
2. One ball/strike challenge per team. If you’re right you keep it.
3. The season is too long. Shorten it back 10 or so games. (Never gonna happen)

Brutal inning. I legitimately think the Red Sox will still win this game. After further consideration and analysis of new data points, I’ve changed my mind.

If he really gets going, it really lengthens the lineup. I mean his wrc+ is 123 since June 1st and his slash line is .269/.361/.452. I dunno about you but I'd be very happy if that was the type of slash line he puts up rest of the year. I would be happy if he continues to hit as well as he’s done lately. If you consider the slow start as part of his body of work for the year, there’s room for improvement (which you correctly point out he ha made). Not sure we disagree much unless you thought I wasn’t aware he’s been better for the last month. My post wasn’t particularly articulate, but I’m just sorta chatting in a Gameday thread.
