it doesnt seem like there is a lot to be excited about and my guess is that many feel the same due to the lack of attention the daily game threads get in comparison to years past. Actually I think April is usually pretty slow as far as posting. These were last year's threads. It's cold, there are weather cancellations, folks are still in classes, etc. It picks up as everyone gets rolling. As far as Ball, Portland's only played 18 games, and all the relievers have only pitched 4-5 games except Kelley (6). Scherff has pitched 17.1 pro innings. The sun's getting warmer. Enthusiasm will grow.

Every year in Portland in April....just brutal....Hate to say it as a Mainiac who loves Hadlock, but move South to Connecticut or play away as much as possible in April. Maybe, but the infield dirt situation is an anomaly here. It was gorgeous on Saturday and would have been a great day for a game, and even if Sunday had been a normal rainout (not sure how much rain Portland got as I left around 12) I'm sure they would have played tonight.

Portland game moved to a 5:00p start due to wet field conditions.

I just noticed that Portland's game notes have a TBA for tomorrow's starter. Would probably make the most sense for Dedgar to go back down to Portland for that start now that Walden's been optioned. PawSox's off day yesterday means the bullpen is rested and the rotation is still lined up fine. PawSox game notes confirm that Dedgar's on his way back to the Sea Dogs today.

As of yesterday this was the plan...

Daniel McGrath has pitched 8 innings striking out 12 and walking 1. The major league roster NEEDS an Aussie! We didn't see him in-game, but I think he's dropped down this year based on seeing him play catch. Anyone see him yet this year? He pitched in the big club's game February 23.

He's scheduled for tomorrow, according to MiLB.com, FWIW. For someone that’s unfamiliar with rotation manipulation, what’re some reasons that they would just push him back a day? In this case it might just have been erroneous reporting to MiLB; he pitched 4/8, so today would have been a day early. First 5 days through the rotation: Diaz Crawford 4 IP (Reyes 5 IP in relief, kind of a piggyback) [snow] Haworth and Duron in DH Scherff No day off, so next time through, including projections: Diaz Crawford Reyes (Haworth) (Duron) (Scherff) I'm not sure of the reporting chain by which information gets posted on the standardized MiLB sites, but not infrequently the game story will name a different starter for the next day's game than the header at the top of the page. Also I think in the lower levels you may have a roster that's composed a bit less by "we need five starters" and more by "we want these pitchers at this level." They can make it work with extra starters, especially where, say, Haworth and Crawford are just starting to pitch in the system, Reyes wasn't starting in Lowell last year, etc.

Thank you, I had missed that totally. Not a ton of Will Latimer/Jeremy Kehrt/Mike McCarthy types on the Portland roster who would be the obvious guy to move up for 10 days. You hadn't missed it. That's from me and new. Layne was escorted from the mound mid-batter in the last sorta-spring game against the Cubs; glad to know it's only an oblique.

I thought I had made an error, but as Chris Hatfield pointed out, there seems to be a problem with ProBoards and links right now. Not a lot we can do. Do you mean there's a problem with a script that generates links? Links are working fine for me, but the coding behind the box scores link has no web page associated with it. <b>Boxscores</b><br /> <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="">Today's Affiliate Box Scores</a><br /><br /> unlike the next one down, which does... <b>Standings</b><br /> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.soxprospects.com/stats/standings.php" target="_blank">Red Sox System Standings</a><br />

A bit surprising that neither Pawtucket or Portland is having a doubleheader. Anyone know why? Probably a variety of reasons, from not wanting to double up starting pitchers this early in the season (PawSox don't have an off day until 4/19, for example) to knowing that spectators may not want to stick around for 14 innings in what's still a not-really-baseball-weather day, but you'd still have to keep your full staff around for food, security, ushers, etc. Works better all around if you can push the makeup game down the road a little.

I was hoping the PawSox might try a doubleheader tomorrow or Sunday, but I suppose 14 innings with temps in the 40s doesn't bring forth the joy of baseball season. (If tomorrow's game goes 14 innings anyway you know who to blame.)

PawSox game notes email just came with the message "we believe the game will be played" in the subject line. K then. Snowing in Binghamton right now too. Yeah, I think Pawtucket is likely to have conditions that are playable, just really unpleasant. Assuming the snow all over the field melts, that is. Their opening ceremonies tend to include delegations from many RI police (and maybe fire) departments so there would be some extra motivation not to cancel. (I can't make it there tonight so I am hoping for the snow/rain-out, personally.)

At a minimum I've been told he's definitely not in Salem, so Florida makes sense.
Also a PSA that I may have missed in other threads: for at least some of us, when the site header is updated, your cache may override it, so you click on what appears to be "2018 Projected Rosters" and see Mata, Houck et al. in Portland. I always need to clear my cache this time of year to get the new "Team Rosters" and "2019 Projected Rosters" links.

Oh, yeah, maybe--I haven't seen him without sunglasses* in a while. (Of course that's true of Cedrola too.) * Or a helmet. FWIW Cedrola was a DH on March 24--that might be the last time I saw him playing.

Is that Cedrola all the way the to the bottom right? I think that's Tovar.

Didn't see Lakins pitch at all obviously, but he was participating in PFP's and fielding BP with the rest of the pitchers. I thought he threw a pen, as I saw him come in early off the fields with a coach one morning (which is the usual for pitchers who do PFP's, throw a pen, and then skip BP), but I may be confusing him with someone else. At a minimum Lakins threw a pen March 27 (though I couldn't get an unsupervised shot of him).

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are PFPs? Pitchers' Fielding Practice. Drill after drill of what you're supposed to do as a pitcher to field your position/where you go in various circumstances (to cover a base or back up a throw) when another player fields the ball.

He also said they didn't want to bring Poyner into that spot for his major league debut. On that one, I have the same response as you - why on earth was he the one warming then? Smith got up right after Kelly buzzed Kiermaier; Poyner started warming when Miller came out on deck to hit for Cron. (You can hear the press box announcements on the radio call.) I think Cora hoped Kelly would get Gomez (he had to face him, neither reliever was ready) and Poyner could face Miller with two out, runners on first and second, and a 4-1 lead. Instead Gomez walked and you had bases loaded, only one out, go-ahead run at the plate. The former would be a tough spot for a rookie to throw his first MLB pitch, but I think throwing him out there in the latter situation would have been bad management.
