The only thing I can figure is that perhaps Tazawa was gassed from overuse during the season and he was treated as a ROOGY at other times during the post-season - he was the guy designated to face Miguel Cabrera for example. Watching the way Craig Breslow pitched that Series, it was quite apparent he was gassed. He was never the same pitcher again after the ALCS ended. But that's all I got. Does anybody else have any idea why Farrell would pull Tazawa from the game so quickly when the Series is only 3 outs away from getting to Koji? My own sense is definitely that Tazawa was gassed. First full season in the majors. Second to Koji in the regular season in both games (71 to Koji's 73) and IP (68.1 to Koji's 74.1). His longer outings were pretty spread out in the early season; he threw 20+ pitches three times in April and in May and twice in June, but 5 times in July (peaking at 31) and 4 in August before dropping to only once in September (and only 20 at that). In the World Series he threw 24 pitches 10/26 and then came back to pitch again 10/27 (only two pitches but obviously he still had to warm up). I think he was toast. With a 5 run cushion I think it made sense to let him get his guy and then give Workman the clean inning.

After they were finished pitching, Wright and Kimbrel jumped in a golf cart to be driven back to the clubhouse. But the cart stopped to let what I assume was Wright's little boy jump in. The cart started again and then stopped to let what I assume was Wright's daughter hop in as well and then off to the clubhouse they went. Wright was going to walk, but Kimbrel assured him there was enough room for everyone. All I could think was that if a Sox player was going to get hurt in a freak golf cart accident it would be either Wright or Brian Johnson... Also, whoever was worried about Williams Jerez, he lives!

Today was my first back fields game, and I was surprised to see that the guys not playing were for the most part wearing name tees instead of name jerseys. Noticeably different font. (Still didn't see a roster, though.)

Thanks for the minor league schedule. Part of it is cut off in the photo regarding start times. Any info on what time A, AA, AAA games start? All games start at 1:00p except that last day against Minnesota when they start at 10:00a.

Also, PFF, Devers is not going to exit games for a defensive replacement. Who said that? Seriously, this narrative that Devers is a hack defensively is driving me up a wall. Rob Bradford had a post today; I can't listen at the real job but if he was on the radio today I'm sure he referenced it.

Are we going to be able to see the results of these minor league games? And I doubt this, but will any of them be televised on milb tv? They are less formal than scrimmages. They barely keep score, they'll end innings and the game whenever they've decided the pitchers have gotten their work in, players will come over from the major league complex and just hit next without regard to something like a batting order. So there really aren't results to be had, and trying to keep a box score would be simultaneously fruitless and high comedy. Any major leaguers almost always bat third in the inning, unless there are two of them, in which case they bat second and third. (In every possible inning, in two games at the same time.) It's extra hilarious that they do so in bright white uniform pants while everyone in minor league camp is in gray. Not much frustrates me more than major leaguers batting when I'm trying to shoot the guys they're bumping to the next inning. FWIW the PawSox (and their opponents) often do game recaps, and sometimes the Sea Dogs, especially while Mike Antonellis is in camp. But you do need to take any results with a heaping helping of sodium chloride.

Sorry if I missed it, but does anyone have the minor league spring training schedule? It's earlier in the thread (here).

This Walden reliever is starting to intrigue me for some reason. I don't even know who he is. PawSox Most Valuable Pitcher for 2017.

Brannen (and Kervin Suarez) took some extra bunt practice after everyone else went in from BP this morning.

With apologies if this did get posted earlier and I missed it, and thanks to carmenfanzone for sharing (and Chris for forwarding...), here's the spring minors schedule:

Pretty sure this was reported last fall, but Danny Bethea is definitely working out as a pitcher now. (He pitched the last inning of the Sea Dogs' Field of Dreams game last September.) I'm going to assume you haven't seen a roster yet, right? I think the last time I got my hands on a minor league roster was on Edison Ave. (Still looking for copies of the minor league game schedule BTW, so if you could share that I'd be grateful!) There are a ton of pitchers here, though, and they were coming out to the back fields as the major league morning workouts were ending--one of the coaches laughingly told Bethea he was still trying to get used to seeing him with the pitchers instead of the catchers. Tomorrow the big club is in Bradenton so I'll be checking out whatever's happening (if anything) with whatever minor leaguers are here.

I think any extra added measurement like velocity doesn't hurt to have in determining things like health and arm strength in spring training. You certainly can't go by results, that is for sure. Of course, but they don't necessarily make any of that other information public at this stage either. I'm sure the Sox had someone with a gun, just not sure they want pitchers looking at it in their first outings, let alone fans and media.

There was no radar gun in the spring training game on NESN, which really ticked me off. No gun readings in the park, just pitch type. When even starters are only going 2 innings I don't think they want anyone worrying about velocity.

Any reason that Chavis hasn’t seen any action in the first four games? Is that normal? I am curious as well and may ask tomorrow. He didn't work with his expected work group this morning or yesterday morning, but I did see him in the Sox dugout today pregame so I wonder if it is something small or illness-related.

Hey carmenfanzone, can you by any chance at least post which teams are traveling or staying behind on Monday, 3/26 (Rays) and Tuesday, 3/27 (O's)? Ian and I are going to probably be down there those days and that'd help for planning purposes! If you have a photo or scan of it, carmenfanzone, I can post it here--otherwise I'll grab one Thursday. sittingstill@gmail.com

As has been the case in recent years, the Rochester Red Wings have posted their spring training schedule first. So we have a starter schedule, with games starting March 14. If the Red Wings are playing the Norfolk Tides, we know the Sox affiliates are playing their Rays counterparts, and if Rochester is playing Durham, we know the Sox are playing the Orioles. When Rochester plays Pawtucket, the AA teams will also play in the same location and the A-ball teams of the Sox and Twins will play at the other parent team's complex.

I hope these writers know that most people will never pay these monthly subscriptions. On the other hand, the way to get people to pay them is to make the product worth it. FWIW the Projo is $16/month for an online subscription, which I find high for a newspaper (but I don't live in Providence). The Athletic is $7.99/month, cheaper if you go annual. If there were a Boston edition and they snagged, say, Alex Speier and Chad Finn, I'd sign up today.

Was there? In the video it looked like Martin and Scott to me. There's an interview with him on the Red Sox website. The more the merrier! Not sure why it's so hard to find a list. But I believe they said there were ~100 players, and the Astros did send four last year.

Spinners game suspended after two innings; will resume tomorrow at the scheduled start time of 11:00a, followed by Thursday's originally scheduled game, weather permitting (but it should definitely be better tomorrow than today). I believe Game 1 goes to nine innings (so 7 more) and Game 2 will be 7, but don't quote me on that.
ETA: I type slow.

Portland cancelled due to rain (it won't be made up; Field of Dreams moved to tomorrow's 1:00p game) and Lowell postponed (doubleheader tomorrow at 12:35p). The field of Dreams promo is my favorite promo event in our system. As a photographer, you must love it. It's the best. It's killing me that it was moved, since now I'll be missing my only chance to shoot a true Lowell day game (and a DH at that) but the uniforms are gorgeous and it's such a great opportunity to get shots that aren't game action. Just a bit better to drive back on Sunday instead of the holiday!
