Moncada and Benintendi were named to this year's Futures Game. While I am delighted in all other respects, this is not good news for my plan to sneak off to Binghamton to see the Sea Dogs and Yard Goats July 8-9.

Dogs won on an 8th inning 3 R HR by Decker. I think you spelled Freiman wrong. (It's easy to do.)

That's an awesome picture, by the way. Not that all of yours aren't. Thanks! Had a pretty solid weekend with the camera in Portland. I was praying this one of Ramos would come out: as it's not every day you see someone score from first on a lineout. (And a bit of an adventure for Ryan Court: not only did Hartford's manager get tossed in the at-bat for arguing a check swing (I think), but then he lines out sharply and the runners on first and third both score.) (Mistakes were made.)

You are overlooking Drehoff who has been Poyneresque since they moved him to closer after his first start. Drehoff was promoted to Portland over the weekend.

Court's roster photo also shows him with an inexplicable and hideous mustache.
Well, okay, not really a correction. But I do have shots up of Court, Freiman and Turley from the weekend if we're still trying to use all locally owned photos.

I'm really glad we're talking about Elias and not the near-death of Sam Travis running into and falling behind the tarp.

I will say that none of us remember seeing Gragnani in camp, so he might be hurt... again. FWIW I didn't see him either--last I saw him was in Portland.

Not sure if this counts as a correction, but if Yomar Valentin is 5'8" I'm about an even six feet.

I wasn't. I just thought it was funny/ironic. Any spring training tips for a newbie? I'm heading down next week for the first time ever. Are we allowed to just roam around during the day? Anything I HAVE to check out while down there? Back fields are free during the day. If there's a major league game, it'll be $10 for parking (I think) and there may be a substantial wait to get out of the parking lot if you leave around the time the game ends (or to get in if you get there close to gametime). Otherwise, both on game days and non-game days there will be parking attendants to direct you. West Lot parking is best for the back fields, the first entrance if you are headed east on Daniels (e.g. coming from 75). As you walk toward the back fields you'll go by the entrance to the batting cages and clubhouse area, where some fans will wait for autographs. You'll definitely have access to the four main back fields, enclosed in chain link fence with some shaded seating. There's a water fountain but nothing for sale as far as food/drink outside the park gates. (You can definitely bring your own snacks and beverages, there's no bag inspection out back.) Not sure exactly what time they come out to the fields but I usually get there nine-ish and players are out (though not always doing more than stretching yet). Most days you can also walk back to Fields 1 and 2 and the Agility Field, often used for major league workouts and BP, but they usually close off the walkway if nothing's going on. There's a midday break for lunch. Before Wednesday, when the games start, the timing can be hard to predict, but once the games get going it's usually pretty quiet 11:30a-12:30p. There may be some intrasquad games or scrimmages against college teams before things get rolling Wednesday. In case you're a true newbie, there are a few things that happen in minor league spring training that might be unexpected. If a pitcher has thrown enough pitches (which often means he's gotten into trouble) they may decide to "roll it," or end the inning prematurely. On the other hand, if a major league pitcher is getting some work, especially if he makes mincemeat out of A-ball kids (Aaron Cook and his oh-so-tempting sinker come to mind), he may get 4-5 outs before the inning break. Major league batters getting extra work may bat second or third in every inning, lineup be damned, and/or may bat in two games at once. And although the teams will be called "Pawtucket" or "Salem," the actual eventual destinations of players aren't hashed out until close to the end of spring.

The Twins appear to be the first of the Southwest FL group to release minor league spring training schedules (in my searching, anyway); here's the one for the Rochester Red Wings. Given the round robin play schedule, if Rochester plays Norfolk, the Red Sox affiliates are playing the Rays; if Rochester plays Durham the Sox and Orioles are facing off. Rochester at home vs. Pawtucket means the Sox A teams are at JetBlue; Rochester as the (not far down the) road team against Pawtucket means the PawSox and Portland play on the back fields at Fenway South. (Rochester vs. Chattanooga = intrasquad/camp day.)

I'm going to the March 13 game @rays, anyone been to their park? Any suggestions on a good place to grab some food in the area or anything else that will make the day more enjoyable? It is a great little park. If you grab something to eat at the park (and if the concessions haven't changed!) I highly recommend the fried fish sandwich at the stand on the right field line behind the berm seating. Big, fresh fried fillet on a soft roll--definitely the best food I've ever had in a spring training park. (It did lead to my ordering a fish sandwich in April at Hadlock, only to be sorely disappointed when their version proved to be a fish stick in a hot dog bun.)

As an aside, I wish the Boston radio people would learn to pronounce his name. They keep calling him "Lovello". Per this chat with Rob Bradford, it rhymes with Jello. (About a minute and a half in.)

The game may not have been over, but the run Allday scored on the play made it 10-5 and the season ends tomorrow. I'm glad he stopped. Wasn't like he was missing the double and got thrown out going for two. This was the HR pitch, BTW:

Just got home from Spinners' game. Well pitched game. Rivera showed quite a bit of range and a solid arm at SS. . Benintendi smoaked a ball to RF that put the RF up against the fence. Basabe also looked very good with a couple of well hit balls, including 2 run walk off single in the bottom of the 9th. My boys were pretty happy as they scored an autographed ball and TMNT shirt off Basabe's back. He seems like a nice kid and chuckled when I told him that we will see him Fenway in the next few years. This one? Any buttons left on it?

Have loved this site for several years and have beenintendin' to donate long before this. Keep up the great work. It's certainly keeping this season much more interesting. Nice! Just tossed in some cash--I give what I can, but I know it's hard to pay too many expenses with photos...

Oh, and if these games don't count, why do they have playoffs? They have playoffs because independent folks often own the affiliated teams, and they want fun and bragging rights and extra gate money and more ways to market themselves. But the roster changes in the playoffs, right after the major league rosters expand, are actually some of the clearest evidence that the games are less meaningful than you think. Every year players who never played for a team in the regular season play for them in the postseason (e.g. Madison Younginer, who pitched for Portland in the postseason last year after playing in Salem). Major leaguers rehab in MiLB postseason games. Sure, at some level the game matters to the PawSox, and they'd rather win. But fundamentally the purpose of the minors is to feed the majors, and it's not in the best interest of the major league team to overuse a reliever. (Note too that the PawSox don't have a day off until May 4.)

Just read the box score from that game. I recognized every name except for one. Who on God's green earth is Che-Hsuan Lin? Was once 8th ranked prospect in Sox system. Played at Lowell, Greenville, Portland band Pawtucket. Filled in for Ellbury in 2012 after an injury. Wikipedia gives you the whole picture. I can give you many pictures as well.

I sincerely doubt they even keep score. They're glorified scrimmages. Just to expand on this a bit, in case we have readers who aren't familiar with spring training games: all kinds of things happen in minor league spring training games that don't fit the box score. Major league hitters getting extra work in games often bat second in every inning (sometimes second and third, as when Christian Vazquez and Panda were getting extra work this week by batting in both games taking place on the back fields). Major league pitchers getting extra work may give the opposition more than three outs in order to get enough pitches per inning. On the other hand, if minor league pitchers have thrown enough pitches, the inning may "roll," or end before there are three outs. They track the score, of course, to figure out when the game ends, but that's about it. (In today's game, for example, when Rijo replaced Moncada in the field, both Rijo and Moncada were subsequently batting--and I don't think there was a carefully arranged swap at the DH position, there was simply a request made to the umpire regarding the batting order.)

It has been a while since I've seen those sheets around. Not sure I've seen them since they moved to jetBlue. 1) Kelly, they definitely still have them. You typically have to get them from a guy on a cart I think? They definitely have them though. I know they have rosters, but workout groups?

Here's the PawSox schedule, from which you can extrapolate the rest: AA will be the same, A will be same opponent affiliate, but the opposite of home/away.

Anybody knows when minor league spring training will officially start? Apologies if I missed an answer, but I believe today was the "official" final report date (though nearly everyone was already there). There were morning workouts, drills etc. in the mornings over the last week. Games start March 18.
