they aren't incapable of pitching multiple innings, that's just how they are being used. If you asked Tazawa to pitch 3 or 4 innings he probably wouldn't blink.

Couldn't agree more. It's so idiotic that pitchers are either assigned to pitch 6+IP or 1IP. I don't even really know that it's wrong (though clearly I suspect it is). The problem is EVERY TEAM DOES THE SAME THING. There's no basis for comparison. It's really amazing how dogmatic teams are about running their pitching staffs, and the first team that breaks out of that has an opportunity to give itself a real advantage over the rest of the league.

Interesting conversation on relief pitchers, and perhaps no solution other than increasing rosters from 25 to say 27. Even if some guys could do multiple innings, you may not be able to use them that often. Most teams love to have guy, other than a mop up guy, that can do multiple innings, but not all fit that bill. And how many last? For better or worse the modern game is one of specialization when it comes to pitching. Don't know if La Russa started it with the relief corp as before him there were the ( Ellis) Kinders, Pages, and Blacks. Now it is mix and match, and pitchers provide a quality game if they go beyond the sixth. ( Older pitchers also did not have the same schedule, travel was not as great as now, and many did not have an arsenal of pitches that tax the arm and shoulder). If all this is not going to change, isn't it about time to increase the roster so that they do not have to play the yo yo game?

I have not read a really good rationale for the current method of RP management. It is true that almost all teams are doing it, but why? Has there been a study showing that better performance is achieved by more frequent warm ups, but less actual time on the mound? And, if so, what about the times, which are frequent, when a RP throws only a few pitches and gets his three outs? Why can't he come back for another inning? Or is it all programmed ahead of time?
Or is it more of "follow the leader" with no real rationale?

Tim Britton @timbritton Farrell on De La Rosa: It was time to get him here and take a look at this role."

Just because someone claims the bullpen is "depleted", doesn't mean that it's actually the case. Two months ago everyone (especially Farrell) was saying Uehara could not pitch 2 days in a row, much less 3... look where we are now. The amount of stupid "conventional wisdom" in this area is just unbelievable.

I think everyone got Fenway's point. I generally don't go around correcting spelling/grammar, but I know FTHW cares about that sort of thing and would probably appreciate the correction. EDIT: scooped.

Nice leave them loaded. Beautiful.
The spell checking was more tighter on the old site. It still exists but not as harsh. Also on the old site the rookies had a harder time posting.

I'm so tired of watching these losers, Holt and Snyder, flail around at the plate.
Time to promote Xander. Now.

This is quite a pitcher's duel. Really like Peavy.

This is quite a pitcher's duel. Really like Peavy. Throw strikes, change speeds and work quickly. It ain't rocket science Mr. Lester.

Breslow isn't good enough to be the setup guy. Frankly, neither is a diminished Tazawa.

In a rational system, this is where you'd want Uehara. Unfortunately, baseball has stupid hierarchies.

Is Tazawa diminshed? I know he's struggled lately. But pitchers struggle sometimes

Nice win, I have to say I didn't think we needed pitching but I love what Peavy did tonight. He neutralized there ace. Contributions from the non-stars. I had to hear the game on radio. I do love the radio guys but I wish I could of saw this one.
Now we need San Fran to pull one out.
