Sorry to break it to you, but the theory that such statistics are at all meaningful has been thoroughly discredited. (See Chapter 3 of "The Book" by Tango, et al.) But if you like management by such stupid methods, I hear Joe Girardi is really into them. So you don't think certain guys after a certain amount of at bats don't own (or in the inverse aren't owned by) certain pitchers? i think there is a metric to be found that could define how many plate appearances 1 on 1 equal significance. All I know is, since I've been watching baseball, some guys consistently have more success against certain pitchers. I've also seen those pitcher be extra careful with those guys, even though that may be otherwise substandard hitters. I enjoyed "The Book," and I know the chapter on that and other small samples. But I also know the game is played by human beings and sometimes, some guys get in a pitcher's head. I feel like people do this a lot, but sample sizes this small have essentially no significance. They have basically zero predictive power about how well a batter will fair in the coming at bats against the pitcher. This isn't just some "stats" vs. "traditionalist" argument. It can be proven. You can look historically and see how people faired and how predictive it is. I'm not saying some players don't fair better against certain pitchers. Of course they do. The issue is citing a handful of at bats to show this - no matter how well they faired - does not prove the hitter will fair better going forward. It would be a significant mistake and misapplication of statistics for a manager to use a tiny sample like this as a reason for who to play.

I don't mind Farrell giving Ortiz the night off. I mind him giving Ortiz the night off when he's in the middle of an insane hot streak. In a completely surprising development, streaks turn out to be nothing magical and Ortiz can still hit home runs even after a day off.

Can we not have Brock Holt any more. Or Snyder.

@peteabe: #RedSox go up 3-2. Holt 0 for 2 and third baseman now 5 for 35 in the last 10 games, 0 for their last 16.
Do it.

Not very smart by the Royals playing too shallow vs Napoli.

I know Peavy's competitiveness gets short shrift, but I think it was on display last inning. He's given a three run lead and what does he do? Nibble? No he comes right after hitters, hadn't given up even though he'd been mediocre and had a high pitch count up to that point. Sexy

Ok it's time for The Drake. Peavy struggled and he's fortunate he's still got a lead.

First time Britton was in a really high pressure situation... seems like he doesn't have ice in his veins after all?

How is this not on Farrell? Peavy was meh all game, he tried to squeeze another inning out of him and now it's cost us the game.

Gotta get the runs now off Herrera. The rest of their pen is better than our hitters. KC may be still out of the WC but they're looking and playing like a playoff team right now.

How is this not on Farrell? Peavy was meh all game, he tried to squeeze another inning out of him and now it's cost us the game. Peavy had not pitched well against KC. He had no K today. Even with defensive help he allowed 3 runs. Pitch count was around 94 after 5th inning. He was known to be ineffective after 90th pitch. No reason to let peavy stay on the mound after 5 inning. It would cost not only one game but also take away confidence of Peavy and Britton.
