For as bad as Napoli has been, I think Victorino has been further from initial expectations, in a positive way of course
Was he an "overpay"? Probably for year 3. But it didn't hamper them whatsoever in $ flow so it's fairly irrelevant
I will say that defensively Napoli has been better than expected

Pretty funny that we have significantly increased our lead in the middle of our slump.

Well the game is tied now so it wasn't over as some nut job suggested earlier. Didn't want to mention it until this one was over, but that was excellent use of the reverse jinx. Thanks Pedroelgrande!

Uehara's exuberance doesn't get old. Props to Breslow and Uehara for closing this one out.

Fantastic win on what is looking like "Reverse Lock Tuesday" for most of the rest of the league. Sox now 4-4 on the road trip despite the fact they are forfeiting the first base position in the batting order.

Koji remains remarkably consistent. Road trip now at .500.
Tampa as hot as they were, is still only .500 against ALEast.

The Jays also burned seven relievers tonight, so that's not the worst way to start a series.

Not that it wasn't bound to happen, but Koji's option officially vested for $4.25 for next season. Maybe the Sox won't have to try to trade mid-level prospects for relievers before next season?

A couple of nice plays by WMB to close it out. First one keeps Encarnacion from batting with a chance to tie the game. Hope he can keep this up. He plays good in Toronto, and gets Pettite and CC when we get home.

Gritty win. No doubt who is the Sox MVP this year.

Tazawa seems to have a tendency to give up the longball this year to the blue jays. Fixed my own post. According to NESN, he has given up 5 homers to the Jays this season.

Best right fielder Boston has had since Evans, that is to say, the best right fielder during my memory. The Victorino sign always was a kind of hedge on an Ells leaving and some kind of issue with JBJ, but as you said.. Victorino has been everything the team could have possibly wanted this year, even throwing in the 10 or so games he has missed with hammy issues he has performed so well while Napoli has been replacement level at best since mid-late May. Why Farrell doesn't just play Nava at 1b FT and go with a rotation in LF of Gomes/Carp with Napoli on the bench is a really good question. His prolonged cold spells of weeks at a time, followed by only 2-3 games tops of hitting good, then several more week cold streaks should spell out bench player, even DFA status for a more usable piece at Pawtucket.

Nice win. Now 4 games up on the Rays. Can somebody please explain to me why Carp isn't getting more time against RHP?

" Why Farrell doesn't just play Nava at 1b" --------------------------------- I'm convinced Farrell will let him play it out on his way to a 200+ SO season. He may ph for him more though in the stretch run.
The thing is we saw his first month's production and since he's not inj there's really no reason why he can't duplicate that. It isn't anything the P's are doing (they are throwing strikes). He was good (with so's) now he sucks (with so's.

Come on - gift win by Seattle down in St. Pete. Let's capitalize. Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez has a 7.06 ERA, and he's 4-0. That's insane, especially since the Mariners are 10th in the league in runs scored.

You know, Farrell did a few things I don't like last night (IBB of Lind, PR for Ortiz, Mike Carp MIA), but most managers wouldn't have used Koji under the phenomenally stupid "don't bring in your closer in a tie game on the road" idea. So he gets credit for that.

Not trying to needle you, but why is that a stupid idea? You still need a closer for an inning if you score, so why are you playing roulette with which inning you'll score in?

Because your best pitcher is the one least likely to give up a run. If you give up a run in the bottom of the 10th with someone else on the mound, you never get to use your best pitcher in a game you had a chance to win. If Farrell had turned to a lesser pitcher after Breslow in the 10th, the 11th inning rally has less of a chance to happen.
The idea of saving your best pitcher in case your lesser ones hold the game so that you might need him later is nuts.

Tazawa 9ERA vs the Jays
1.66ERA everyone else with a 0.95WHIP
We could use another RHP so he isn't ask for up to 6 outs so often.
