@brianmacp: If the Red Sox need a second baseman in an emergency, Will Middlebrooks would play second base.

With them being in a national league and no DH there is a good chance Bogarts at least gets PH duty tonight.

Don't they always do their rookie hazing in the dog days just as they leave for a road trip? I really liked when Joba, Ian and Hughes had to dress as wizard of oz characters. Chamberlain was the cowardly Lion. Igawa was a flying monkey. Usually in September to inflict the most casualties. Last road trip usually I think?

If I remember correctly it usually is during the last road trip, so it looks like either Colorado or Baltimore are going to see something like this:

Is it wrong to want Stephen Drew to come down with some kinda 4 hour flu?
Ok ok it probably is. I'm a gambling man so I'm staying up and hoping we see him at some point.

Almost always when Sox brought up a position player under Francona he would start the guy that night. I remember a reporter asking him about this and he said "We didn't bring him up to sit him down."

So have Carp, Middlebrooks, and Lavarnway in limited ABs.

According to wOBA, the only players on the team that have been worse than Salty in the second half are Ellsbury, Pedroia, and Victorino (all hitting ahead of him) and Napoli (who is hurt).

I mean, he's going to play tomorrow. What, he's gonna play in Pawtucket tonight and then fly to California by himself?

Is it just me, I don't want to see Xander's MLB debut as a pinch-hitter. I know it means nothing in the grand scheme, but I think seeing your name on the line-up card, and taking the field with the team is special. Not as an after thought in the box score.

Nah, but why not start him? I mean come on. If it were a home game or a game anywhere east of the Mississippi, I'm sure that they would have waited until tomorrow to make the move. I get it on the West Coast though.

When you don't have a viable replacement at 2B even to start a game or two, this Pedroia is still better. So unless Drew is able to move over and you insert X at SS he won't have an off day for a while

The home plate ump is really pinching the strike zone. Lester isn't getting pitches that look to be strikes...
