Pedroia's been missing a lot of meatballs, lately. He's been a pretty major offensive liability since the All-Star Break, but he contributes enough on defense and baserunning and they don't exactly have a good enough backup to be able to sit him as much as I'd like, at least until he gets out of this funk.

Yeah. Every pitch Lincecum threw him was pretty much down the middle and the only one he hit hard was pulled foul before that lazy fly ball to CF. Team needs to get Betts/Coyle, or someone ready.. Maybe switch Marrero to 2b. if he is going to have a chance. Tired of these retreads. Bonifacio would have been nice since he can play everywhere but C/P and runs well.

This is why NL baseball is stupid.

None of those guys are solutions for as backup second basemen this year, and Pedroia is your starting second baseman for a very long time. I am not opposed to shelling out some money for a real utility infielder though. Edit: though last time they did that, with Punto, people complained a lot, so maybe I am alone in feeling that 1.5 million dollars for a guy who can backup multiple positions is not a terrible investment.

So is anyone rooting for Lester to work up that pitch count so Xander gets to pinch hit?

Am with u 100% they are not ready this year and with Betts/Coyle? Not even next year. Have always been of the mind for the team to spend a cpl million for a good utility player, not of the rotten Billy Hall caliber either, but Bonifacio, what Alfredo Amezaga was before destroying his leg. Willie Bloomquist variety when he was available a cpl years back. The team hasn't had a real, solid IF backup since Alex Cora. They keep on giving them away in various deals.. Lowrie, Avilles.. It's like every time they have one, they find a reason to move them.. yeah.. Manager, RP, but they could have moved other ppl instead.

Daniel Nava continues to hit well. If he and Gomes can solidify the #5 spot in the lineup, the Red Sox offense could get scary again.

I'm going to say we'll see Xander as a defensive rep bottom nine. Get out on the field, shake the jitters out, come tomorrow ready to start.

Again. NL baseball is silly. I do not want to see a pitcher hitting ever.

I agree so firmly with both of the above statements that I don't know which one to quote and I don't know how to multi-quote yet.

And that is why you stick with Petey even if his bat is off. Very few 2B turn that high chop into a fairly easy double play

Boy Drew needs a couple off-days. He's made a handful of errors (not scoring errors, just mistakes) both mental and physical.

Ellsbury joins hit parade. Maybe he'll be here next season who knows? This one feels over...with Lincecum gone.

Here is a fun stat: Shane Victorino has been hit 7 times as a right handed batter, once as a LHB.

if 2 guys can get on in the 7th, any bets on Xander pinch hitting for Lester?

With Lester hitting in the8th, looks unlikely we see Cander tonight.

By the way, another very solid start from Lester. He's looked pretty good since he stopped relying on his cutter so much, with a 44/12 K/BB in 49.1 IP (before this start) since the beginning of July.

Don't you send Lester back out there, Farrell. Don't be dumb.

Surprised that they didn't throw Xander up there for Drew in the 9th. I'm glad as I'd rather just see him get the start and the whole nine yards tomorrow, but still seemed like a good opportunity
Also, no real opposition from me to Lester going the 9th

Best moment of the game. The ball attendant trying to catch the fly ball in foul territory. I have seen them accidentally field fair grounders, but that is usually instinct/self defense. She actually camped under this foul ball and tried to catch it.
