Koji in the 9th? Thats gotta be Farrell trolling. Let's not forget that Britton got warmed up in the 8th too just for good measure.

Koji in the 9th? Thats gotta be Farrell trolling. Astounding. Workman and Uehara in two games that weren't even remotely close, and Morales and Generic DFA Candidate in the one-run game. It's like, how much worse could Farrell's bullpen management have been in this series? The answer is none. None more worse. Look, I'm wasn't thrilled by not seeing any of the business end of the pen on Saturday, but this last game, Farrell was just bringing Koji in to give him a little work, giving him consistent workload. THIS is no big deal.

Hit one hard back to the pitcher which was deflected . One nice play coming in on a slow roller. Looked comfortable not overwhelmed at all. Not sure where you're at, but a nice tip to a beer tender should get the game on for ya at a local sports bar. Thanks man. In Pittsburgh though, no monetary value will keep a sports bar full on Pittsburghers from watching their first winning season in 20 yrs. Not even a pregame show! Not sure if you're old enough yet (I say this only b/c I vaguely remember you talking about your HS games a few years back, unless that was the other guy with a Charlie Zink handle), but if you are, Church Brew Works. Go. Do it now. Thank me later.

Wait, Middlebrooks is playing 2B? WMB said “We haven’t talked about it.” when asked if he and Farrell had talked about him playing 2B. Isn't that kinda irresponsible of the manager for not discussing his plan (or worse, not having one) with the kid? Seems like it woulda been easy enough. Of course, no one's complaining cause it all went well, but you'd think the guy would want to get some IF practice at his potential position, no?

Just a note re the tactical managing in the loss.
You know how small children, as soon as they learn the "-ed" suffix for the past tense, will apply it universally and indiscriminately, as if it always has to be right and good? That's the way Farrell manages the batting order in NL parks. Never let the pitcher's spot come up, if you can avoid it!
It's been pointed out that he could have had Uehara in that game with another double-switch, e.g., Salty goes into catch, hitting 4th, and Uehara bats 8th, or Gomes goes into LF and Nava moves to 1st and Napoli comes out of the 7 hole, or Ortiz goes to 1B. But I know he wanted to give Salty a day off, and the other two changes make your defense worse.
The problem, though, goes back to the bottom of the 8th, when he did an offline double-switch and put Napoli in the former pitcher's slot, 7, and the pitcher in the 4 slot. What exactly did that accomplish? It avoided the use of a pinch-hitter. As if that were inherently and always good. But in this case, it meant that Mike Napoli, with his .333 OBP vs. RHP, would be leading off the top of the 9th instead of David Ortiz, with his .453 OBP (and .677 SA). Or Jonny Gomes, whose numbers as a pinch-hitter this year are so absurd (1771 OPS) that it may not be explainable as a SSS fluke.
So, you shouldn't just be pissed that we lost a 1-run game to a bad club in a game where Uehara never pitched, even though he needed work. We also lost a 1-run game in an NL park where our starter lasted 5.2 IP, four other guys pitched, but the manager never found a PH PA for either Ortiz or Gomes, and his failure to do so led to him not using Uehara.
Maybe he was thinking that he wanted to save both Ortiz and Gomes as PH, should the game go into extra innings. Well, the worst case scenario is that you'd have to use Salty as a PH in about the 13th, and about the 16th you wish you'd done what he did, because now the pitcher has to hit. I'll roll the dice on that any time.

THIS is no big deal. So wait, he put his worst relievers on the mound in a critical situation in the second game of the series, and then had to use his best reliever in garbage time the next game get him work... and you're offering this as a defense of Farrell?
