Is it just me or when he hits them do they seem to get out in more of a hurry than most balls? I saw him in batting practice at the Fens last year and the ball just sounded different when he hit them. Just CRACK.

I'm a little ticked off that XB was called up to sit on the bench. He needs to play everday or he will never get better. Why isn't he starting?!

That was possibly the easiest mlb HR I've ever seen. The first pitch to him was up high and I believe at 83 or 85 mph. The 2nd was the same speed approximately and grooved. It was batting practice. It would seem that Bogaerts would be well suited to this opportunity as well.

This is another team that might bid for Ellsbury's services in the off-season, btw. If they get much shittier their pick will be protected.

Is it selfish to say that I'm happy X isn't in the lineup? Moving into a new place means no cable/wifi for beyond today. If there's ever a time for a SP follower to miss out on watching games, it's now. So I sympathize with the early morning members who miss out on West Coast Trips. Speaking of which, could someone give a quick (beyond the boxscore) rundown for the board on Xander's first MLB game? Not many know this kid and baseball in general quite like this board, and I know I, and those who missed the game, would greatly appreciate it. Anyway, I would be disappointed with X sitting against a lefty too if I had the game, but it's not like Drew starting is such a bad thing. He has a .333/.343/.455/.797 career line vs. Zito is pretty good. Sure it's a SSS, but his 35 AB's against Zito are the 10th most among all pitchers faced. You're not going to find much greater of a sample size than this. So sitting him today probably wouldn't send a great message to Drew, for whatever that's worth. X will get his time, this is just the start of great great things to come. Hit one hard back to the pitcher which was deflected . One nice play coming in on a slow roller. Looked comfortable not overwhelmed at all. Not sure where you're at, but a nice tip to a beer tender should get the game on for ya at a local sports bar. Thanks man. In Pittsburgh though, no monetary value will keep a sports bar full on Pittsburghers from watching their first winning season in 20 yrs. Not even a pregame show!

This would not change the pick the Red Sox get back as compensation. It would still be a pick at the end of the first round, the Giants would then lose their 2nd rounder.

Pedroia got his double but it wasn't hit especially hard and just snuck past Arias down the third-base line. He hasn't hit anything particularly hard in a while.
This has to be the inning where the Red Sox bust the game open.

Thank you Gomes. BABIP broke the Red Sox way.

That's what I'm hoping for as they'd be more likely to pay the draft pick penalty for signing him.

I don't especially want to re-sign Ellsbury, but I'm not sure it makes any sense for a Red Sox fan to root for more teams to get in on the bidding.

When all is said and done WMB is going to end up with a very respectable .OPS for the year. He's really racking up the walks batting 8th in these NL games

shouldn't have Salty's last ab count as a hit as Gomes beat the force out?

I DO want Ells back on 5 yrs or less, and get worried when I see another team that has a legit sell point beyond offering the most $$$. A few of those - Mets, Seattle, and even NYY - may not offer playoff opportunities in the next 2-3 years. Even with this off year, though, I think SF will have a legit pull as they won the WS twice recently and the NL West is an easier sell than, say, the AL West with Seattle or the NL East with NYM.

Boras is going to pull every trick out of his hat to see that Ells ends up with much more than that flop BJ Upton got (5/75m) and I see no way Boston gives Ells anything near 5y, much less that long and more than over 15mAAV when the only plus he brings is his legs.

OK, I'm convinced - Felix could be a solid #2 pitcher in the NL.

If I were an MLB pitcher, I would love to play in some of these NL West parks, especially if I had rangy OF defenders. I'm constantly convinced that park effect adjustments need to be applied on a more granular basis. For instance, there has to be a way to specifically adjust the stats of right-handed pull hitters in Fenway or fly ball pitchers in Petco or left-handed power hitters in Yankee Stadium.

Bogaerts struggles in his first defensive chance as a replacement at 3B. He knocks down a hard one-hopper (one that wasn't an easy play but which I expect an MLB-caliber defender to handle cleanly more often than not) and gets a strong throw off, but it's high and sails over Napoli's head.

In all fairness it was a tough play. If Napoli is a little taller that's probably an out too.

Yeah, it wasn't that bad of a play, and if Middlebrooks had done the same thing I wouldn't have batted an eye. But I figured folks at home would want to know. It was a nice recovery and a very strong throw, but he should have been able to come up with the ball clearly the first time around.
