Why? So he can sit on the bench 4 times a week? If they weren't going to give him a shot to be the 3B before Middlebrooks, that's fine, but they might as well leave him where he can play every day for as long as possible now.

Who backs up 2B?

Anyway, my initial reaction out of the way, if he's playing against every LHP and once or twice a week against righties, I'd be happy with that. Until Napoli gets back do you guys think we'll see X at 3B and WMB at first against RHP?

Time for WMB to take some grounders at 1st.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I heard that Holt was traveling with the team to San Francisco and Los Angeles while assigned to Pawtucket.

The other side benefit here is that Xander will be playoff eligible without using Andrew Bailey's slot. That would allow the Sox to carry a third catcher, for example.

Which brings up a question: I was under the impression that, for a player to use an exemption like that to get on the postseason roster, it has to be pitcher-for-pitcher or position-player-for-position-player. Is that false?

Buster in the pre game last night said they were worried about Drews workload. I'm guessing he plays SS vs most LHs and splits time at 3B with WMBs playing 1B too.

Watching Drew for a while, IMO he's best served as a guy who plays 4 times a week. He's just not very durable so this helps for two reasons. 1) Injury insurance for Drew 2) Keeps the sox from overpaying for Morneau if Napoli is really dealing with a foot issue that can linger by moving WMB to 1st. If Boegarts can pull a Machado then the Sox are in great shape for a deep playoff run all recent hiccups considered.

"Who plays 2nd?"
I'm sure Xander could play 2nd in a pinch... Pedey plays everyday it would only be in the event of a Pedey injury that they'd need a 2B backup.
I'd have to think that the reliever getting the call is Villareal ...
I'm actually interested in seeing him

Saw on twitter that Napoli is "day-to-day" with plantar fasciitis and Middlebrooks was warming at 1B before last nights game. Just knew that this move was next. Plantar Fasciitis is not a "day-to-day" injury either. I've had it for almost a full calendar year. Pujols has been dealing with it for the entire season if not longer. Napoli could play through it but it is just painful and hard to treat.

My guess would be Drew actually. Congratulations to Xander, one of the (if not the) most impressive ascents through the minors in Red Sox history. Well deserved, here's to hoping the FO and Farrell do this right.

If there are only two, it has to be somebody already on the 40 man.

I've had plantar fasciitis as well, it takes MONTHS to go away, if not a full year. I'm sure other people in here who've dealt with this will concur; the most painful thing to do is stand still. When Mike Napoli is standing in the batters box he very well may be at his most uncomfortable. If that's what's effecting him or at least contributing to it then I suspect things will not get any better for Napoli.
Is Carp really our man? If Bogaerts catches fire shouldn't he at least be considered. I know he's more likely to Platoon with Drew. But if Drew catches fire going into the playoffs don't you want both those bats in the lineup?

Bogaerts will get as much time as WMB and Drew. He'll play short against most lefties, and play 3rd during WMB's off days, and games played at 1B while Nap is hurt.
But what an exciting day for this board and all of Red Sox nation. Personally I've been waiting for this day for a long long time, and the closer he got, the harder it was to wait and not post "Call up X!"
I must say though, who was the jackass that didn't vote X as our #1 prospect in the Pre-season SP polls? Oh wait, that was me. Time to take responsibility for that stupid move. I voted Webster #1, and in hindsight I was too moved by what scouts were saying about him in ST. 97+ heater with a plus sinker? Only played ball for a couple years? The sky's the limit! I also felt that X would go through a tough adjustment period at AA, something similar to the 20/1 K/BB he saw in his first time through. What I didn't realize is how good of a learner X was; how advanced every facet of his game was. You want me to hit the ball up the middle? Sure! Draw more walks? Sure! STICK AT SHORT AT X! Sure! The adjustments he made from the end of last season into the WBC this year were simply astounding. Unprecedented for a new prospect follower like myself. I started following the site when Lars was #1, so clearly I was yet to see anything like this until X came through. Anyway, congrats to the boss and here's to hoping for a long long outstanding career for the X-Man!

Coming off a disappointing series with the Yankees and with the Sox playing on the West Coast (and my alarm going off at 6 am), I thought it would be a good time to take a few nights off. And now this. Congratulations to Xander ... looks like I won't be sleeping much this week.

I do not want to rain on everyone's parade but do not expect him to be great right away. Trout needed to be sent down after his first call up. Keep the expectations realistic for a 20 year old in his first shot at the Majors. Hopefully he rakes from day 1 but do not expect it.

Honestly, I think most everyone here is pretty realistic that Bogaerts isn't going to come in and immediately be Cal Ripken, but this IS really exciting. Bogaerts is the best positional prospect the Red Sox have had since Nomar. There will be some hiccups, but he improves the team now and has a chance to be really, really special in the long term. Also, Trout did struggle some, but the biggest reason he got sent back to the minors is because the Angels are dumb.

Is this call up a bad thing for his super two status (i dont really know what that means) and/or potential time to free agency? Is he gonna hit the FA market at like 25 now?
