9/10-9/12 Red Sox @ Rays Series Thread

I'd be ok with 1 out of 3 although obviously I prefer they do better. I think the pitching matchups favor Tampa the first two games and Boston the last game, but I'd be a little nervous if Tampa took the first two and the pressure was on the Sox to win the last game. I don't know how far Buchholz will go tomorrow or even how effective he'll be or if the guys coming in the 5th or 6th inning to relieve him will be effective. Price has been dominating against the Sox this year. Cobb is a good pitcher and Dempster is Dempster, but I definitely like the Sox' chances in the Peavy/Hellickson matchup. Agree here. this could get uncomfortable fast. Tampa has not been a good match-up for the Sox since Price came back and Myers got settled in. A lot of people - media foremost - seeming to forget this. Not saying a 4.5 game lead with 13 to go would be a bad thing, just saying nothing's a lock with this schedule, which has 6 vs. Orioles (who have given the Sox a hell of a time), and 3 with Toronto, or do we forget they took 2 of 3 from the Sox about 20 days ago? Races get close, some humans get hungry, some get tight. And BBIP can be a wonderful or awful thing. Nothing is over until it's done. Yours still permanently scarred and damaged from 1978, 2006, and 2011, Guidas 2006? We finished 11 games back in 3rd place and it took a hot finish to get there. 9 back in the wild-card chase.

I think it would be great if we can knock the Rest of the East out of the playoffs. Texas/Oakland 1 WC with Cleveland getting the other. Very possible, Indians have a much easier final schedule with no contenders outside of the Royals.
Let's hope we see Buch in pre-injury form.

Tied for 1st on August 1. Then everyone got injured and it all went to hell.

I also remember 2007 - yes we did win but we squeaked out the division after we had a huge lead earlier in the year. The yankees got us down to 2 games after being down 14.5 IIRC.

Interesting line-up out there today.
Pedey - 2B Victorino - CF Ortiz - DH Napoli - 1B Gomes - LF Nava - RF Salty - C WMB - 3B Drew - SS I was thinking Victorino leading off and Pedey 2nd. But, either way is cool. Not sure about Salty. Might have went with Ross. And, Drew over Xander. Damn you Farrell

I like Pedey moving up to one of the first two spots. Ellsbury's absence gives him a much needed break from the 3-hole. I'm pretty disappointed to see Xander sitting in this game over Drew, and I'm a big Drew guy. We're facing an incredibly tough lefty, who Drew is 0 for 7 against, and Salty and Nava are pretty weak from the right side. I'd have slipped D-Ross in there today for his defensive boost and helping ease Buchholz return and similar offensive ability vs a lefty as Salty.

Yeah, I'm actually upset by the fact that Drew is starting over Xander in this one.

Dear Jonny,
If you want Bogaerts on the post-season roster and to be able to contribute in the big moments, you need to get him at bats against the type of pitchers he'll see in the post season. This was a great opportunity for that. I am so disappointed in the way you have missed this chance, John. And I'm sick of your, "I go with my veterans no matter what the stats say," mentality! If I had acted that way I would've never met your father.
Love,
Mother

FWIW, Salty vs. Price: 1 for 12.

I think it's just reinforcement of how much Farrell truly hates Lavarnway's game. Seriously if this is the case, and Ross can't go, bring up Butler. There's no way Salty should be going vs. Price.
ADDED: And I could almost say the same for his starting Drew over Bogaerts here, except he may be erring slightly on defense with the carpet in what Farrell would hope would be a pitcher's duel. But even then I think Bogaerts' bat could make a good argument for putting him in there over Drew, as well

I'll join the club, Drew looked awful against Price. I don't get it.

LOL at not starting Xander against the left-hander.
He might as well go home for the offseason right now.

Why are Salty and Drew starting? Both bat very poorly verse LHP, and would be especially bad against a left-handed ace like price. Lavarnway and Bogaerts are both right-handed and would do much better against price. In addition, Bogaerts is only 20 and should play everyday.

This stadium sucks ass. The cow bells suck ass. I wonder what happened to that jerk that would yell throughout the game. I can't wait to see the ball hit the roof and fall back in play.

You need to go with your best guys, no matter what the other players "were in the past", "he has started all year", or how much they are being paid. Its beyond me why Lavarnway and Bogaerts aren't playing instead of Salty and Drew, who SUCK vs southpaws, and would be even worse against an ace like Price.

Buchholz got 73 in his last outing so what do they give him here - like 90?
So far the movement and control on his pitches look like he never took time off.

Geez, we had Joe West in the last series and now Angel Hernandez gets a hand in deciding outcomes of the next 3 games? Sheesh.

75-80 pitches.
His stuff looked pretty solid, but his command was (understandably) a little bit off. It was still a very encouraging inning, though.

Middlebrooks' range is pretty underwhelming.
edit: More importantly, listening to D-Lowe and Pedro at the same time is one of the cooler things NESN's done in awhile.
