Salty I understand ... he's the starting catcher, and you need to get him and Buchholz on the same page. But this lineup is, shall we say, sub-optimal against Price. Nava's pitiful against left-handers, Salty's not good, Drew's not great ... like everyone else, I don't really get the Bogaerts use, but it seems clear that this time is not geared toward maximizing his usefulness this year.

Middlebrooks' range is pretty underwhelming. edit: More importantly, listening to D-Lowe and Pedro at the same time is one of the cooler things NESN's done in awhile.[/b] For sure, good stuff. Big fan of D. Lowe. Besides his pitching , back in 2002 or 3 I took my youngest son to a game in Minnesota to see the sox. We were all decked out in Red Sox gear. During BP Lowe was shagging flies. He caught one near us in the left field seats and I yelled "how about a ball for a sox fan". He turned and tossed me the ball. I said "thank you sir". He came jogging over and chatted with us for a brief time. Made our day.

Shocking how bad Angel Hernandez is at his craft.

That curve by Clay was one of the nastiest I've seen him throw in a long time.

Did Derek Lowe just fart during that commentary? If so, just awesome.

Did Derek Lowe just fart during that commentary? If so, just awesome. I don't know if it's just the novelty, but I'm liking Derek Lowe as the color guy. It's nice listening to a guy that is just barely removed from baseball and whose experiences are still relevant. edit: Buchholz looks a lot sharper than I assumed beforehand. It's amazing that this team is a premier baseball team despite losing arguably their best pitcher for approximately three months. If he comes close to his early 2013 form, I really, really like their chances.

This game already feels like a win. I don't mean that this game is over, but Clay's performance is better news than actually winning the game in the end.

I'm loving having this stud back leading our rotation.

Also, starting Drew against Price was just a really bad idea.

I think they should call it a day for Buccholz leaving him feel good. Dont think Farrell should try to steal few more outs from him.

You gotta hope after a certain point Farrell stops starting Drew against Lefties. Now 0-9 against Price.

Man, I don't know why they didn't bring Buchholz out. Low leverage inning last inning and thew just as many pitches as his last start. They usually jump them up in 10-15 pitch increments until no restrictions.

What an acquisition Craig Breslow has been. In all seriousness, nice pickup by Ben.
edit: Also enjoying watching the Rays run Price into the ground before the playoffs after he just came back from an injury.

David Price, if you're reading this, you need to throw Middlebrooks something that's not a strike.

Tremendous at bat by Middlebrooks. Let's see if Farrell finally gets a clue and pinch hits for Drew with man on 3rd.

I don't understand why Maddon did that. It's one thing if it's 1-0 or 2-0 the other way, but it's not. David Price could go 9 on 150 pitches and they'll still lose if they don't score any runs.

I love those long at-bats because they just chew through an opposing pitcher's pitch count. Probably more likely to make a mistake that deep into an at-bat too, though admittedly that's just an assumption and is not backed by stats.

Drew just looked awful all night. I suppose the rationale is that Drew is better defensively and you want that for Buchholz, but Farrell has to get over his unwillingness to play Xander versus lefties by the playoffs, or else Ben Cherington and Larry Lucchino aren't doing their jobs properly.

Also, WTF is this from Angel Hernandez? He's awful. I hate umps who alter their strike zones based on count/situation.
