Tom Curran is the one who broke it, so it's credible. He said the rule may still have been applied correctly, but the initial wording makes it a bit murkier.
Regardless, deciding to randomly enforce a new rule Week 7 puts a damper into the league's credibility. Very poorly done by the NFL and officials.

They didn't change the rule, they just changed the explanation of the rule posted on NFL.com, which no coach worth their salt would have relief on. The official rule in the rulebook is the same.
This is a crappy situation, but it's just like the tuck rule game-- you can be indignant for a while, but it was technically the right call. It came at an unfortunate time, but the Patriots should never have left it in the hands of the officials. The defense may have reached its breaking point, and even with Gronkowski back, the offense has a long way to go.

True, but Vice President of officiating Dean Blandino mentioned the "second level" on video when explaining the rule.
While the officials ultimately made the correct call, it's not a good look for the NFL when the VP of officiating doesn't even know what a new rule is.

According to ESPN, among others, Andre Carter is signing with the Pats today. As some have pointed out the biggest impact is likely in the locker room (and defensive huddle) and against the run while in the sub-package (ESPN Boston pointed out Buchanan's struggles on 2 key plays in the NE losses).
Not an impact move but it makes some sense.

That could turn out to be a terrific signing.
He's certainly up there in age, but he knows how to pick his spots to rush the QB. That could be valuable considering the amount of attention Jones demands.

It was mentioned earlier in he thread but getting Vereen is gonna be big. I think hes there best rb when healthy. I think the rest of the options are solid, great depth there. I prefer bolden as the 2nd back personally but hes always dinged up. Tough loss to the Jets but it happens, division game.

Pats acquired DT Isaac Sapoaga from the Eagles for a 5th rounder. Solid replacement while big Vince is hurt.

Tommy Kelly placed on IR. Another blow. Let's hope Issac Sopoaga helps on the D-line.

Watching the Sunday Night got me thinking how different the NFL is from the MLB in the way of how you should consider someone for MVP. Andrew Luck's numbers were hardly MVP like, but he was without his top WR, down 21-3 at the half, with one of the world's worst O-line against a terrific defense, and on the road.
That kid is a leading candidate for the MVP thus far and even though he was a 1st overall pick it's been an unnerving steal for the Colts. What a game.

1. The holding call on McCountry was an atrocity. NBA-level acting right there. 2. 3 seconds ran off the clock after the Panthers TD. Then, the clock operator let another 2 seconds run off near the end (which the refs put back on). Weird. 3. The last call.
That was the second-most rigged game I've ever seen. There's no debating this one was rigged.

The McCourty penalty was a bad play by him regardless of it being embellished.
I saw the 1:02 to 0:59 run off as well
Last play was bogus...
Bottom line is Pats hurt themselves with all their penalties and McDaniels has been atrocious this year. Pounding the ball down their throats and you don't run on 3 and 1? If you want to pass at least have a decent play with options. That's just one of many poor play calls.

It's probably silly to say but I'm actually less concerned with how the call affected the outcome of the game. I guess more to the point, I've righted my mind to it since Carolina outplayed NE for most of the game and, last play asided, deserved to win.
However, to me the refs redefined what a catachable ball is. If one of the biggest, strongest and best tight ends in the game has NO shot at catching that ball (by their definition) then 40-50% of PI calls throughout the season could be legitimately argued. Further, you could also say that if they had made the right call in the first place (holding, not pass interference) then the catchability of the ball wouldn't have even entered into it.

1. The holding call on McCountry was an atrocity. NBA-level acting right there. That play on Olsen where McCourty flat out HUGGED him and then kept his arms open? I hated the non-PI call as much as anyone, but this was very clearly a holding foul and it was just incredibly stupid by McCourty.

They couldn't have called defensive holding-- the ball was in the air by that point, and you can only call defensive holding before the ball is thrown (edit: here's a good explanation). The catchability of the ball is a judgement call, one that the referees got wrong here. I agree that it's a shame that a really good game is going to be remembered this way. The McCourty defensive holding was legit. He had his arms wrapped around Olson and then tries to walk it back with the "arms to the side" business. The 3rd and 1 play-action play was pretty inexplicable. I understand the logic (catch them by surprise and score the TD; if it had worked, we'd all call McDaniels brilliant) but if they knew they weren't going for it on 4th down (which I agree that they shouldn't have, with the score tied), they needed to be more risk-adverse and go with what had been working. (Sidenote: I think they didn't go with the Brady sneak since on an earlier successful conversion, Brady took a pretty big hit from Keuchly.) That said, the rest of the offensive play-calling and execution was pretty great-- the Patriots were marching up and down the field at will, and they only lost because a sack knocked them out of field goal position, they fumbled in the red zone, and that 15 yard penalty on Mankins stalled a drive and forced a field goal.

I hated the non-PI call as much as anyone, but this was very clearly a holding foul and it was just incredibly stupid by McCourty. I didn't see a replay of it this morning - it was definitely a hold. But it was also a pathetic acting job. That NBA-level stuff is becoming more common in the NFL, and I don't like it.

BTW - Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that if his teammates hadn't held him back, Talib was going to swing his helmet at Smith? Man did he look out of control.

I'd rather the Pats win by 20, but today's game was entertaining. Never give up on Brady.
