2013 New England Patriots Thread

Well, the Pats squeeked one out versus Buffalo yesterday but lost Shane Vereen (their best rusher yesterday) for a few weeks with a broken wrist. Without Gronk, Welker and Hernandez, the passing game was (charitably) a work in progress, except for Danny Amendola who was terrific. Even Tom Brady fumbled.
Welcome back from the doghouse, Stevan Ridley; welcome back from the inactive list, Leon Washington!
They play the Jests on Thursday night.

Losing Vereen is a huge blow. He had a good chance to be the best offensive skill player on the roster. The coming weeks will be a real challenge for the offense considering how out-of-sorts Thompkins looked and the continued inability to stretch the field with any frequency.

Hooman also pulled a hammy, so Sudfeld is the only healthy TE. Wonder if they'll try to hold it together until the Grokenforcements arrive or try to get creative.

Pats release WR Quentin Sims from the practice squad and sign DT AJ Francis to the PS.
Danny Amendola is reportedly out for Thursday's game and Aaron Dobson says he'll be playing.
I could definitely see a lot of one-on-one coverage from the Jets against Thompkins and Dobson/Boyce as the Jets try to jam up the middle of the field.

Losing Vereen is a huge blow. He had a good chance to be the best offensive skill player on the roster. You mean for week 2 with Gronk and Amendola inactive? KT looked much better in spring trainingpreseason, hope he bounces back quickly. Edelman's performance was also encouraging. What was really disappointing to me was the defense. After the first half of the third preseason game I thought we would have an actual pass rush this year...

Eh, not too concerned about the defense. They gave up one sustained drive all game, shut down C.J. Spiller, and only gave up a couple big plays (notably the Talib blown coverage). Manuel was mostly throwing check-downs and running quick West Coast stuff, and they did pressure him some (I remember Jones just destroying the left guard on one play, for isntance).

Shane Vereen has been placed on injured reserve/designated to return list. Pats re-sign TE Matthew Mulligan.
I could see a lot of two TE sets and a lot of runs, screens and check-downs. I don't see a lot of stretch-the-field throws.

Pats claim DT Chris Jones off waivers from Buccaneers; waive OL Josh Kline (who looks to be the early favorite for this year's Ross Ventrone).

The run defense is, per usual, really really good, and the secondary is fine when Talib's out there. The only real issue with the D is its inability to get consistent pressure on 3rd downs. But I'm more encouraged than anything about the way the defense played in the 4th quarter.

What a horrible game for the Pats offense yesterday. Someone please tell me Amendola will be back against the Bucs.

Sort of a NFL generals post, but MY GOD what an awful, awful game it was between KC and Philly. I hate thursday night football, it seems every team that plays it plays it VERY sloppy.
Pats and Jets was also intolerable. I wish it would just go away.

Pats go to 4-0 but lose Wilfork for the season. Ouch. At least Amendola and Gronk should return at some point in the near future. I'd love for the Pats to find a way to continue making the most of this season even without big Vince. There's only so many years of Tom Brady left.

Gotta think one of the practice squad DL's gets promoted for Sunday, right?

Sudfeld cut, Collie signed. Pretty productive day yesterday. Sudfeld being cut could be good news for Gronk coming back. I wonder what Collie has to offer at WR. The amount of concussions that guy has had is ridiculous. I hope the Pats end up promoting Marcus Forston from the practice squad but they haven't made a move yet which makes me wonder if they will at all before the game on Sunday. I'm really interested to see what Forston looks like, he has a ton of potential.

Cole cut, Sudfeld claimed by the JESTS. Two open spots on the roster. I would guess DL (Forston/Francis) and CB/S (Green/Davis).

I hope Brady's done bitching out his teammates, because he's been a garbage QB the entire season.

I hope Brady's done bitching out his teammates, because he's been a garbage QB the entire season. He's been really, really inaccurate so far and has made bad reads. Some of that may be due to lack of chemistry with the new receivers, but a lot of it is on Brady. Would like to see Brady start to get some of the heat. That said, still a bunch of dropped passes and bobbles. If an NFL receiver gets both hands on a pass, I expect him to catch it cleanly.
