9/17-9/19 Red Sox vs. Orioles Series Thread

Farrell on WEEI - sounded up beat about Ells. He didn't speak long about him but said quite matter-of-factly that he's becoming more active on the foot and we're looking forward to getting him some in game experience before the season ends.

Ranaudo, Barnes, and Owens have been hanging around the big league clubhouse to get acclimated to the big league routine. It's the first year the Red Sox are doing this, and it could be a good way of getting pitchers who are in line for callups in 2014 to start getting used to big league life.

@sean_McAdam Ellsbury reiterates that he's "very confident" of returning before end of season but offers no specific timetable

Tonight is 1$ beard night at Fenway. If you show up with a beard(real or fake) you can get in for 1 buck. Just another sign to me of how much trouble baseball is in. It's a cute idea ,but to need gimmicks to get fans in the park , for the team with the best record in baseball is not a good thing. Watching the recaps on ESPN most parks are having trouble. Lots of reasons, economy, PED's, pace of game, ect. But kids aren't playing ball, watching on TV , or going to games at the same levels as in the past. I have no answers ,just hope the game bounces back as it has in the past. What do you think?

Am I doing the math wrong or is the magic number not actually 3 for Division? If Orioles win out and Sox lose the rest of their games Balt actually wins the div because of head to head. Head to head doesn't matter for division anymore

Confirmed: Lavarnway has lost all non-injury opportunity with this team.
Personally, I am bummed about this. I still think the bat can be an asset. He drew the nasty stick in the amount of times he has been used this year, and often seemed to be matched up against some of the better pitchers the Sox faced. Despite that, his approach seemed to improve as his service time increased this year, and he also seemed to be hitting the ball with more authority in the second half. Intriguing, especially since he was not playing on consecutive days and had to keep fresh via batting practice.
Catchers' primary job is to receive the ball (and all that goes into that, framing, blocking and calling a game). His footwork is still clunky, he doesn't frame the ball well and still occasionally stabs at it. He is definitely a trade candidate, but I wonder if they should give him a first baseman's mitt in the off season and send him to winter ball, just to see. I still think he could generate solid OBP and perhaps pick up his power with regular at bats. Then again, I bet there are about 10 MLB teams where he could start or be a solid #2 catcher. I don't think the Sox will be one of them no matter what happens to Ross after this season. Butler can fill that role over the next year or two and is a better defender than Lavarnway, and Vazquez and Swihart are waiting in the wings.

Head to head doesn't matter for division anymore OK, but theoretically they can still tie with that scenario, so magic number should be 4 yes?

If anything it helps us our competitors have that problem. One of the reasons our sellout streak ended is because the prices are jacked up in Boston compared to other cities. The Sox are still at like 93 pct attendance. Just tough when parking is priced the way it is and all that. I think Baseball is still a top 3 sport in the USA in popularity, and its still my favorite, but football's popularity has really exploded recently. Even in the past few years it seems like its popularity has increased even more.

The most losses they can have at the end of the year is 70. Baltimore already has 70 losses and Tampa has 68 losses. If the Sox win 3 more games then the most losses they can have at the end of the year is 67 which would guarantee the division.

Not wild about seeing Shane patrolling the triangle, but sitting JBJ against Chen is probably a good idea. Let's hope it doesn't cost us again in center (or right!) Is Lavarnway broken? Win tonight.

Concern Trolling at it's finest. I think Baseball is still a top 3 sport in the USA in popularity, and its still my favorite, but football's popularity has really exploded recently. Never been called a troll before. Am I wrong Fenway that the % of kids playing ball is down? Attendance at the ballparks is down, and TV ratings are down?My concern is real. I hope it's a concern that's off base.

I said top 3 because I can see an argument for basketball when you look at the sport as a whole rather than just the NBA.

Is it coincidence or does it seem like since Ellsbury has been out we have seen more of those hits that are making it to the triangle.

And just like last night, failing to plate RISP comes back to bite them on the ass.

Unlike last night there was nothing we could really have done to avoid those double plays today though.

Why doesn't Farrell have somebody warming?? Its not like we are hurting for bullpen depth.
Edit: Morales just got up, but as Eck put it, "You have to start watching Peavy close when he gets up to 80, 90 pitches." Still a nice outing.

I hope it's a concern that's off base. Watch Ken Burn's Baseball (which you should do for its own sake) and look at how many people were in the stands for games in the 1950s and 1960s. You'll see many empty seats. BTW, TV Ratings are down for most sports. Mostly, it has to do with the increased number of alternative options available on TV. 40 years ago, when the World Series Ratings spiked, there really was not much else on TV. Now, there are tons of cable options, not to mention on demand, Netflix, apple TV, HBOgo, ect...

Great to see Middlebrooks sitting back on pitches and driving them the other way. Would be nice to have his pop for the playoffs. edit: Also, thank you Mike "Mr. September" Napoli.
