In a situation where a team (KC) w/ 40 on the 40 signs a free agent (Vargas) and the team has to make a corresponding move to take a player off the 40 before the rule 5 draft does that prospect become eligible for the draft or treated differently. Pardon my ignorance.

You don't always have that choice, however.

^ Truth. Sorry - was assuming that the player was staying on the roster for the purposes of the question, but it's a distinction worth making.

Is Ricky Romero really not on the 40-man roster? What a huge fall. I'd still be the guy that took him and hoped he could get back to his previous levels.

I assume you have absolutely no clue about Ricky Romero's recent performance or his contract, or you just like burning money. Do a small amount of research and then come back to the board and re-post this message.

What I was not aware of was that he was off the 40-man roster. I said I'd be the guy, "the" being the key word, as in the only guy. I'm just a sucker for a reclamation project.

I know this is a Rule 5 thread. But, on Ricky Romero: he's only two years removed from a 15-11 W/L season pitching to a 2.93 era. He's due 7.50 M for 2014 and 2015. Expensive reclamation project. Farrell should have a big say in this since he was under his tutelage the years he was skipper in Toronto.

After the Daniel Bard experience, the Ricky Romero reclamation tour is not coming to Boston. Besides, with the Badenhop trade, we do not have any open spots on the roster.

Last year when the sox lost Ryan Pressley he wasn't even on the radar as far as I remember. Amfox listed some guys that might get picked yesterday. Any other names in the sox system that posters think might get picked?

Kurcz is possible, depending on his health outlook. Maybe a team picks him, gets to look at him in Spring Training, maybe he still needs rehab time, stash him on DL / rehab for a while, call him up eventually, gets a muscle strain, back on DL, and before you know it September rolls around.

Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato 8m Red Sox don't expect to add anyone in the Rule 5 draft tomorrow, have enough people on the 40-man already.

Peter Gammos said that the O'S will take Michael Almanzar. He didn't word it that way but that's what it implied.

Let us recall one year ago. Sox drafted OF Jeff Kobernus from Wash Nats and immediately traded him to the Tigers for AAA non-roster player Justin Henry (Sox had no roster space for Kobernus). Kobernus was returned to Washington by Tigers near end of spring training (he did not make the Tigers team).
Henry became a free agent in OCT.
Kobernus hit .318/.366/.388 with Syracuse (IL) in '13.
