AAA Rule 5 draft - Red Sox take SS Jonathan Roof from PHI Sox drafted him out of high school but he went to Michigan State and was drafted in the 10th round in 2010 255 .321 .330 651 in 4 years of minor league ball; 49 games in pcl in 2012 but then back to A ball last year.

Roof - former Sox draftee, SS-UTIL, spent last season in A(+) ball, looks like an org player.

Looks like a Justin Henry-type super-utility player who can fill in at pretty much every position in the upper minors but almost certainly won't factor into the major league equation. He'll be 25 next year and has all of 138 PAs at AA or above.

AAA Rule 5 draft - Red Sox take SS Jonathan Roof from PHI Any idea about his ceiling? Stucco. Seriously, in addition to amfox's numbers, the only year he played at the AAA level where he hit .246/.310/.363 in 138 PA in 2012. I couldn't find any quickly available scouting reports on his defense. He can ,though, play three IF positions and has played some OF.

Maybe a SS for Salem, considering we have Vinicio penciled in there now after an awful year at Greenville.

Does anyone think Almanzar will stick on the O's roster the whole year? He could develop a malady in ST which puts him on the 60 day DL [wink][wink] for a good part of the year, then rehab after he's cleared. It seems easier to bury a pitcher in the bullpen for a whole season rather than a position player.
Anyway, it didn't look like Michael had a clear path to the majors with the Sox.

Okay, then I don't get it unless we're set on Holt going back to Pawtucket, which is very possible, and not adding a good AAA SS.
Add - I guess it's not an issue for him to fill in up and down the ladder.

What's his competition, Heiker? Right now Sox Prospects projects the SS position going to Jose Acquisition.

Virtually no chance Almanzar sticks in BAL, right? What are the chances he's back in the Sox org? I saw on the twitter feed BAL may try to trade him (Chris Hatfield: "they might... make a move and get something for him") If they do, does he still have to stick on a 25 man?

If they do, does he still have to stick on a 25 man? Yes, since the object of the Rule 5 is to give players who have been in the minors for several years (I believe its four) to be placed on the 40 man roster and start the options clock. In this case its the ML roster.

You know I don't think it a big loss but I thought the Orioles turned a corner the last couple of years and this reminds me of the old ORioles. Look at the East right now you can make a case for the Sox to be favorites to win the East again. I am not really worried so far with the other teams offseason moves. The MFY's as much as they spent money they took hits also.

Today, the Mets selected Seth Rogan from the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft. They then flipped him to the Dodgers, who apparently felt he wouldn't last to their selection. If Seth doesn't stick with the Dodgers ,he's returned to the Phillies.

I'm not so sure of that. If Machado takes some time to come back, I am thinking that Almanzar could get significant playing time. The O's haven't signed anything of note this offseason and this could be considered a low cost bridge move if they feel they can't compete next year. Out of all the teams, I was most worried about the O's snagging Almanzar. That said, we have some of our strongest prospects at third and our best prospect can play the position as well, so it is not like we are thin there in reality so no huge loss IMO. I knew Almanzar would get picked up by someone. There is too much ceiling in his bat. I could definitely see him sticking there. On a team with a weak roster I could easily him serving out the year as an occasional pinch hitter and maybe getting a larger role if he plays well.

McGeary was a AAA phase selection last year and he didn't pitch above Greenville. Spots on the reserve list are definitely not at enough of a premium that a guy needs to play even near that level.

Yeah, my bad. You're right. The reserve lists are an odd rule. Seem to be pretty much insignificant outside of Rule 5 draft time.
