I think one of the unspoken reasons Farrell chose Gomes over Nava yesterday was because he knew it would be extremely tough to score against Verlander and he thought maybe his best chance was for someone to hit a HR. Gomes maybe has a little more pop and it definitely was very difficult to string hits together. I can understand that approach with Verlander given his recent numbers. I would hope it's Nava today though because Fister is a very different situation.

After yesterday's game Farrell all but said Nava is going to be in the line up today.

Selig has to be loving that Peralta is a walking advertisement for PEDs on the big stage.

The first time we faced Fister, he threw a ton of sinkers (4th highest percentage of any start) and had his worst start of the season (by Game Score). The second time, he threw his second fewest amount of sinkers, and had the best start of his 12 from August onward. It'll be interesting to see his approach today.
One another random note: I couldn't see any evidence of a changed September arm slot for Peavy in the pitch/fx data.

The Red Sox have a few lefties who are excellent low-ball hitters (Nava, Saltalamacchia). Hopefully, seeing a non-strikeout guy gets the bats going.
That said, don't underestimate Fister. By FIP (3.26 this year, 3.44 career), he would have only trailed Buchholz if ranked amongst Boston starting pitchers. He doesn't walk anybody and gets tons of ground balls. Avoiding double plays will be key.

At least we shouldn't have to watch double digit K's this game. I expect a big game for Middlebrooks he's such a streaky hitter and he's due for a 2HR game right about now.

Sometimes against pitchers like Fister, whose stuff looks so tempting, players get over anxious and lose their plate discipline. That just plays right into this guys hands. They should be extra cautious tonight. Make him throw strikes. We can beat him like a drum if we are patient. We should be able to succeed against him if we keep our heads. I've seen us lose that focus with him before though and other pitchers like him. He's the type of guy who often gives us fits.
But this is the playoffs and everyone should be extra focused. I think we beat him bad tonight.

I think we beat him bad tonight. I was at that game where he shut us out back on Labor day weekend. We hit into like 3 or 4 double plays that day. Fister is a DP machine. Ellsbury and Victorino need to steal if they get on 1st. Maybe even Dusty as well. The slower guys we may want to bunt over.

I really dislike Saltalamacchia as a player. Just awful in all phases of the game.
