I respect Leyland but IBB to the AL base stealing leader with 2nd open? Really? shows you how little he feared Victorino and to a smaller degree Pedroia

Horrible squander there. Bunt aside I would've preferred a pinch hitter for Ross. ugh.

The issue for me isn't that Koji can't do the job. He most certainly can. It's the extra pitches and the fact that he might be needed for two more games and God willing more games in the World Series. Just don't want to see the Sox overuse him and lessen his effectiveness. Is there any reason to think this is the case? He didn't work last night and the Red Sox have a day off tomorrow. Unless he gives up a baserunner, he'll probably throw less than twenty pitches or so. Uehara did pitch a career-high in innings (as a reliever) this season but he's looked just as effective as he was during that hidden perfect game stretch. I understand the theory, but when the Red Sox are two wins from the World Series, I'm going with the demonstratively better pitcher. I get all this and as I type this Koji has been sitting in the dugout for awhile watching the Sox squander a big scoring opportunity. He's 38 years old. I wonder how many 1.2 IP appearances he makes before it catches up with him. I don't think it's a stupid move. I just think they could have lightened up his load with an effective Breslow and keep him refreshed for Game 6 and/or Game 7 without jeopardizing the lead as there was nobody on at that point.

What wmb did was some of the smartest base running I have ever seen. But victorino has been stone cold this series and Nava should have hit for him. Lets hope Koji holds the lead

Hopefully they pull this out for no other reason than I wont have to hear Victorino's usual nonsensical post game babble explaining his at bat

If you're gonna bench Nava for no reason other than Gomes' intangibles, maybe we should consider giving Victorino a day? His defense is immensely valuable, but if he keeps getting tough breaking stuff, he's going to keep burying us. Considering Pedroia's significant struggles as well, we could use a boost behind Ellsbury.
But even better: Maybe just start playing Nava over Gomes against RHP's like you're supposed to.

Yes Koji: make up for that missed 2nd-3rd opportunity in the 9th. Back in the drivers seat! Shut off the sound affects and drum and come back to Boston 3-2.

Yes! Heart attack inducing, but I'll take it. I hate to say it, but this thing is far from over even heading to Fenway with a 3-2 lead. Thats how good Scherzer and Verlander can be. That being said, we're in as good of a position as we can ask for and I'm pumped for Saturday.

Koji is carrying this team on his back.
Tough to breathe during these games.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I have game 7 tickets and I can honestly say I'm hoping this series doesn't go that far.
GREAT win!

I think his defense is too valuable, especially since they've been pitching Cabrera away all series. I would prefer to see him dropped in the order-- something like: Ellsbury Nava Pedroia Ortiz Napoli Saltalamacchia Victorino Drew Bogaerts

I just hope the 27 pitches he threw doesn't have any impact on him if they need him in Game 6 and/or Game 7. I would think that's as many pitches as he's thrown all season in a game perhaps or at least since he's become the closer?

He did end up throwing 27 pitches tonight, which is a lot. I'll concede that they're leaning on him more than they probably should, but it's hard to resist doing so when he's such a devastatingly good pitcher.

What a great exhausting wonderful much needed win!!!
This felt like a football game where the team scores a touchdown early, gets the extra point, and then runs out the clock and punts the ball beginning in the 3rd quarter while the defense holds the other team to two field goals to escape with a win. That's what it felt like anyways.
Just hope if and when the Sox get chances to score at Fenway they cash in on those opportunities and here's hoping Buchholz has his best game post-injury.

Find it hard to imagine we don't see Xander in the lineup for game 6. Question is really is he with WMB or Drew on the left side

I forgot one more adjective. That was a gutsy win, the kind of win like the 3rd game in which a game that looked like it could get away was contained.

Get Drew out of the line up. He needs a day off. 1-17 this series. I had that in my initial lineup, but Scherzer has pretty sizable splits both this year and over his career. Plus, Drew's defense will come in handy with a groundball(-ish) pitcher like Buchholz on the mound.

For everyone calling for guys to sit and get pinch-hit for... you realize that Xander, Ellsbury, and now Napoli are pretty much the ONLY guys hitting, right? (EDIT: Although, hopefully, Pedroia woke up tonight.)
As for the potential Gomes-Ellsbury-Nava outfield, that's a terrible idea. Tigers are getting killed because they're fielding a lineup with Miggy, Fielder, and Peralta in LF. At least Victorino and Drew are good with the glove if they're not hitting.
Crazy part: the Cardinals ARE HITTING WORSE THAN THE RED SOX ARE RIGHT NOW.
