Jeff Fletcher (Angels beat writer, former Fan House columnist) now suggesting on Twitter that he thinks Victorino throwing to 1B to try and nab Freese was obnoxious, as was swinging 3-0 in the 9th being up 8-1. Can't stand complaints like this. If it's a chance to get the final out of a very important playoff game (or really, any game), then you take that chance, regardless of the score. I kind of thought it was obnoxious too, but for a more self-serving reason. That's one of those moves that only works if you catch 'em by surprise, and there's little-to-no reason to bust it out with two outs in the ninth inning of a blowout. Save it for when Craig is taking his time in a more clutch situation. I guess I'm just of the opinion that if you have a decent chance at getting an out, you go for it. Craig is pretty hobbled right now, so you'd be taking advantage of his injury rather than a healthy player just jogging like Freese. It's also pretty rare having a legitimate opportunity to throw out a runner at first from the outfield, and doing so successfully comes across as "heads-up" and "exciting" before "obnoxious" to me. Tyler Kepner ?@tylerkepner 34m @jefffletcherocr @dgoold If I were a pitcher and my fielder had the chance to end a World Series game and didn't do it, I'd be furious. Expand Derrick Goold ?@dgoold 5m @tylerkepner @jefffletcherocr great point. End the game however possible. Expand Jeff Fletcher ?@jefffletcherocr 1m @dgoold @tylerkepner Apparently no one agrees me except Harold Reynolds. Oh well.

Keep the pressure on. Victorino plays to win and he almost got him.

He might have even been out on that play. His foot was above the bag on the slide.

Wondering if you guys think Lester had an illegal substance? He was pitching with a lot of movement. Don't like to think that he was cheating.

He absolutely had the same movement as he's had all year according to PitchFX. It looks like he had a mixture of bullfrog Sunscreen and Rosin on his glove, which every pitcher uses a similar type mixture to get a grip on the ball. It prevents the ball from getting sweated up and slipping which could cause a serious injury to a batter. It's basically an agreed upon substance.
Nothing to see here.
The minor leaguer who made the fuss about it has been reprimanded by the Cardinals and the whole thing is an embarassment to St. Louis

It's almost certainly sunscreen/rosin. Using any illegal substance to doctor the ball is technically not permitted, but many pitchers do it all the time and the umpires and other team generally look the other way.
Then again, that's the same logic everyone used when the PED scandal first emerged...

LinkIncluding the Cardinals and Wainwright, specifically. "If it's something like Rogers in the World Series, that was different. That was overboard," Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright said. "He was getting an unfair advantage. If you're talking about remnants of pine tar on his glove, I don't buy into that" being a violation.
...
Wainwright acknowledges at times using a mix of resin and sunscreen to enhance his grip. Just as significant, the combo applied to his pitching arm helps prevent sweat rolling onto his hand.

Harold Reynolds, Joe Magraine, Dewayne Staats, Rod Allen should all get hired by TBS for their next Post season series. Then everyone would know up front to just put the TV on "Mute" from the beginning instead of even attempting to listen to the announcers they hired for the most part since that collection just listed is the WORST of the lot around.

The minor leaguer who made the fuss about it has been reprimanded by the Cardinals and the whole thing is an embarrassment to St. Louis This is good news. If there's a legitimate question, you raise it internally during the game and maybe your team can benefit from it, but at least there's the chance for legitimate inquiry. Tweeting it so that your followers can raise doubts about why your team got pummeled in Game 1 of the World Series after the fact serves no purpose other than giving yourself an out. Back to your regularly scheduled baseball discussion now....

i am amazed anyone thinks there was anything on his glove, i clicked the link in this thread and the only sense i got was that the camera was terrible. i mean his shirt looked blue. It was a minor discoloration in a picture where everything was discolored in some way. Maybe it was bigfoot in his glove, or UFO!
